Background / History
The Jie Sect was originally one of the Mystic Sect’s Three Teachings. Its inheritance was extensive but its Scripture Repository was notably primitive and disordered, preserving teachings on crystals, beast hides, bones, stones, and other materials engraved with Dao Script rather than in conventional books or jade slips 2.
Tongtian led the sect as its founder and first-generation sect master. He maintained a broad teaching tradition and accumulated hidden foundations across countless eras, including the Sword Realm and a vast formation network beneath Biyou Palace 108 110 111.
Chen Yang’s recognition by the Slaying Immortals Sword marked his rise within the sect. As the destined future Swordbearer, he received a fortune share equal to that of a direct disciple and was charged with safeguarding the Jie Sect’s inheritance 22. Following Chang’er’s betrayal and Duobao’s withdrawal from administration, Tongtian placed Chen Yang in charge of the sect’s internal and external affairs 93.
Tongtian later abdicated and formally appointed Chen Yang as the Jie Sect’s second-generation sect master. The disciples accepted the succession, which followed Chen Yang’s major contributions to the sect’s strength and organization 107.
Doctrine and Cultivation
The Jie Sect’s methods emphasize breadth: they are comparatively easy to learn but difficult to master, drawing upon the strengths of many schools 187.
- The sect preserves major inheritances in both the Sword Dao and Formation Dao. 109 110
- Chen Yang pledged to spread the Jie Sect’s Sword Dao throughout the Primordial World, despite personally following the Formation Dao. 110
- Outer disciples receive simplified Jie Sect cultivation methods and divine abilities, while higher status and resources are earned through contribution and advancement. 96
Leadership
- Tongtian — Founder and first-generation sect master. He transferred authority, hidden foundations, and strategic resources to Chen Yang while retaining a mentoring role 107 109 113.
- Chen Yang — Second-generation sect master. He restructured the sect, oversaw mass recruitment, redistributed its fortune, and ultimately led the unified Three Teachings 107 114 164.
- Duobao — Former chief disciple and Chen Yang’s master. He relinquished his position in the Jie Sect to found the Many-Treasure Sect, while remaining allied with his original sect 106.
- Chang’e — Chen Yang’s sole disciple and temporary administrator during his seclusion 115.
- Yunxiao — Trusted administrator who implemented Chen Yang’s organizational decrees, including the hierarchy for subordinate organizations 114.
Internal Structure
Disciple ranks
The sect established a tiered disciple system in which higher positions carry greater treatment and access to sect fortune.
| Rank | Notes |
|---|---|
| Direct disciple | Receives a full portion of sect fortune under the earlier system 22 |
| Personal disciple | Holds status below direct disciples but above core and outer disciples 21 22 |
| Core disciple | Thirty-six positions were established; holders receive fortune and treatment comparable to personal disciples 19 |
| Outer disciple | Recruited through public trials; receives basic methods, resources, protection, missions, and contribution rewards 95 96 |
Tongtian introduced a challenge-and-promotion system: outer disciples could challenge core disciples, core disciples could challenge personal disciples, and personal disciples could challenge direct disciples. Victorious challengers gained the corresponding status 21.
The system stimulated cultivation and exposed weak or unreliable disciples, but also weakened the sect’s earlier familial atmosphere by making rank and resources contested interests 21 94.
Recruitment and discipline
Chen Yang changed recruitment from a master-centered process into sect-centered admission. Applicants could come regardless of race, origin, or aptitude, but had to register, pay a modest fee, and pass aptitude, Dao-heart, willpower, and combat trials 95.
- The Gate of Myriad Mysteries and Heart-Questioning Formation were used to eliminate applicants with unstable Dao hearts or ulterior motives. 95
- Accepted candidates became Jie Sect outer disciples rather than personal disciples of Tongtian or another elder. 95
- Outer disciples were severed from the sect’s fortune, preventing their numbers from draining it. 96
- Missions and contribution exchanges made the outer-disciple system self-sustaining while generating resources for the sect. 96
- Disciples who violated sect rules faced punishment; later Three Teachings reforms also tied continued membership to completing assigned duties. 96 179
By the second recruitment drive, the Jie Sect had more than one million outer disciples, though Chen Yang considered this far below his desired scale of over one hundred million 114.
Reforms and Expansion
Chen Yang’s reforms
After assuming practical control, Chen Yang imposed fixed advancement requirements on direct disciples. Those unable to break through within specified periods could lose their seats, fortune, and resources; disciples who severed their corpses were expected to relinquish their former direct-line benefits 94.
He also encouraged established disciples to found their own organizations. Their followers could retain nominal Jie Sect affiliation, but needed to earn a Jie Sect disciple seat to gain direct-line status and benefits 94.
This transformed the Jie Sect from a primarily personal master-disciple lineage into an institution centered on its own rules, membership, resources, and fortune 95.
Affiliated organizations
Chen Yang created a five-tier hierarchy for organizations established by qualified Jie Sect disciples:
| Rank | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|
| Sect | Highest rank; exemplified by the Mystic Sect 114 |
| Religion | Corpse Severing realm 114 |
| Palace | Great Luo Dao Fruit 114 |
| Temple | Above Great Unity Realm but below Great Luo Dao Fruit 114 |
| Faction | Great Unity Realm 114 |
The policy freed positions for later generations, expanded Jie Sect influence, and distributed excess sect fortune before it could dissipate 114.
Within a thousand years, the Jie Sect’s network included four religions, eight palaces, sixteen temples, and seventy-two factions 114. Major affiliated sects included:
- Many-Treasure Sect — Founded by Duobao; remains aligned with the Jie Sect 106.
- Dragon-Tiger Sect — Founded by Golden-Spirit Holy Mother; its fortune is suppressed by the Four Symbols Pagoda 113.
- True Martial Sect — Founded by Turtle-Spirit Holy Mother; its fortune is suppressed by the True Martial Seal 113.
- Orthodox Unity Sect — Founded by Wudang Holy Mother; its fortune is suppressed by the Green Lotus Talisman 113.
- Three Xiao Palace — Founded by Yunxiao 114.
- Primordial Unity Palace — Founded by Wuyun Immortal 114.
- Haoran Palace — Founded by Pilu Immortal 114.
The Four Seas became the primary sphere of influence for the Jie Sect and its affiliated organizations 115.
Fortune
The Jie Sect’s fortune is both a source of cultivation benefit and a strategic concern.
- The sect initially relied on the Green Peace Sword to suppress its fortune. 96
- Rapid recruitment and mission-based growth caused fortune to increase faster than the sword could contain it, resulting in dissipation. 96
- Chen Yang redistributed fortune to affiliated sects: Duobao’s Many-Treasure Sect received ten percent, while the Dragon-Tiger, True Martial, and Orthodox Unity Sects each received five percent. 113
- The distribution stabilized the Jie Sect’s fortune while empowering its branches and encouraging their leaders’ breakthroughs. 113 114
- Outer disciples did not share directly in Jie Sect fortune, allowing the sect to expand without having its fortune diluted by mass membership. 96
Hidden Foundations
Tongtian Sword Realm
The Tongtian Sword Realm, also called the Shangqing Sword Realm, is a world created from Tongtian’s Sword Path. Its mountains, rivers, plants, and Sword Qi contain Sword Dao principles, allowing sword cultivators to accelerate their comprehension 108 109.
- Contains Tongtian’s lifelong Sword Dao insights, extending to his Primordial Unity Fourth Heaven cultivation. 109
- Houses numerous independent Sword Dao lifeforms. 109
- Five especially powerful lifeforms—including Daoist Destruction and representatives of the Stellar and Slaughter Sword Daos—administer and defend the realm. 109
- Tongtian entrusted the realm and its Sword Dao lifeforms to Chen Yang as a defensive foundation for the Jie Sect. 109
Formation Dao Space
Located beneath Biyou Palace, the Formation Dao Space controls the Jie Sect’s grand formations and territorial defenses 110.
- It contains the Formation Spirit, also known as the Array Elder, a sentient formation born from immense scale and a trace of Formation Dao Demon God flesh and blood. 110 111
- Tongtian transferred control of the space to Chen Yang. 110
- The space preserves ancient Formation Dao inheritances, including knowledge connected to a destroyed race associated with the Formation Dao Demon God. 110
Four Symbols Formation
The Four Symbols Formation is one of the Jie Sect’s ultimate hidden weapons.
- Its formation eyes are the sea eyes of the Four Seas. 111
- It has spread through the Four Seas and continues expanding toward the four extremities of the Primordial World. 111
- The Array Elder’s strength and mobility depend on the formation’s growth. 111
- Tongtian stated that, in desperation, the formation could be combined with the Slaying Immortals Sword Formation to tear apart the Primordial World and recreate earth, fire, wind, and water. 111
- Tongtian entrusted it to Chen Yang as a Jie Sect killing move. 111 112
Strength
After its organizational expansion, the Jie Sect declared itself the strongest sect in the Primordial World 108.
Within a thousand years of Chen Yang’s large-scale affiliated-organization policy, it possessed:
| Category | Recorded strength |
|---|---|
| Primordial Unity experts | Tongtian 114 |
| Half-Step Primordial Unity experts | Chen Yang and Duobao 114 |
| Corpse Severing experts | Eight 114 |
| Daluo Realm experts | More than thirty 114 |
| Great Unity Realm experts | More than seventy 114 |
| Outer disciples | More than one million 114 |
Role in the Unified Three Teachings
Hongjun praised the Jie Sect as the most successful of the Three Teachings in development and ordered Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun to entrust the Human Sect and Exposition Sect to Chen Yang as well 164.
Under Chen Yang, the Human, Exposition, and Jie Sects were formally treated as one organization. Their disciple systems, fortune systems, cultivation systems, recruitment practices, and independent-sect policies were reorganized according to the Jie Sect model 165 177.
The Jie Sect’s Sword Dao inheritance remained available to the other branches. When Yuding planned to establish the Shushan Sect, Chen Yang directed him to study at Golden Ao Island because the Jie Sect held the strongest Sword Dao inheritance among the Three Teachings 179.
