Background and History

Duobao was already the Jie Sect’s senior disciple when Chen Yang manifested from the spirit of an innate grand formation. He protected Chen Yang before his manifestation and thereafter supplied him with cultivation methods, resources, and treasures, becoming the foundation of Chen Yang’s early cultivation. He accepted Chen Yang’s unprecedented Body-Forged Formation path while warning that the Formation Dao had no established predecessors in the Primordial World. 1

To support Chen Yang’s development, Duobao obtained and entrusted him with the Immortal-Slaying Formation Diagram. He also tasked Chen Yang with assisting Golden Ao Island’s protective formations and prepared him for the Three Sects Tournament, where he hoped Chen Yang could restore Jie Sect prestige. 1 3

At the tournament, Duobao served as the Jie Sect’s organizer and guide. He did not participate because his Daluo Golden Immortal cultivation would undermine the competition’s fairness, instead placing the sect’s hopes on Chen Yang. After Chen Yang won through a body-breaking fusion of internal and external sword formations, Duobao rushed to his injured disciple’s side, simultaneously celebrating the victory and rebuking his recklessness. 3 7

Duobao later brought Chen Yang to Five Villages Temple to seek Ginseng Fruit Tree branches and First-Generation Ginseng Fruits for his Great Unity breakthrough. During the stay, he joined Chen Yang, Hongyun, and Zhenyuanzi in studying spatial Dao, deriving the Void Hand Seal from their shared insights. 7 8 10

When Chen Yang and the Three Xiao encountered the Six-Eared Macaque’s lingering obsession at Penglai, Duobao intervened after they were overwhelmed. He restored Chen Yang’s depleted strength, suppressed the obsession with the Void Hand Seal, and explained the Six-Eared Macaque’s history, death, and connection to the Eastern Sovereign. 17

Duobao took responsibility for the recovered wisp of Eastern Sovereign origin and reported it to Tongtian. He later returned with news that it contained incomplete clues to Eastern Sovereign’s Treasure, awarded Chen Yang the Wind Spirit Stone containing purified Six-Eared Macaque essence blood, and relayed the sect’s rewards for Chen Yang and the Three Xiao. 18 19

He supported Chen Yang’s proposal for a challenge-based promotion system within the Jie Sect, though he cautioned that its rules required refinement. The resulting reforms later reshaped the sect’s hierarchy and competitiveness. 20 21

Duobao accompanied the Three Pure Ones and Chen Yang to Zixiao Palace as a recognized third-generation Mystic Sect disciple. There, he refined the Many-Treasure Pagodas intended to bear his Three Corpses and witnessed Chen Yang’s formation-based artifact-refining method surpass conventional techniques. 54 56

After Chen Yang’s reforms caused Jie Sect Fortune to soar, Duobao chose to relinquish his position as chief disciple rather than allow their lineage to accumulate excessive influence. With Tongtian’s permission, he founded the Many-Treasure Sect, using the Heaven-Earth Creation Pagoda to suppress its Fortune; the resulting Merit and Fortune enabled the merger of his Three Corpses and his Half-Step Primordial Unity breakthrough. Despite leaving Jie Sect administration, he vowed that the Many-Treasure Sect would remain allied with the Jie Sect. 105 106

During the Demon Cultivator Upheaval, Duobao revealed his Artifact Dao and fought Dijun’s eldest son, the Zombie ancestor, directly within the Human Realm. His body had become a terrifying treasure-like vessel through the refinement and consumption of innumerable spiritual treasures. 146 147

Duobao continued to support Chen Yang’s efforts to strengthen the Three Teachings against the future Demon Sect. Although his incomplete origin prevented a conventional Primordial Unity breakthrough, he later refined a Heavenly Dao Sage Dao Fruit and attained Sage Status in the midst of Chen Yang’s battle against Zhunti. 178 214 268

Duobao is an amiable yet majestic Daoist with a somewhat plump build. He wears azure Daoist robes, carries a whisk, and is frequently depicted seated in meditation or refining treasures. 1

Duobao is deeply protective of Chen Yang, combining generous material support with direct guidance and stern discipline. He is proud of Chen Yang’s accomplishments—sometimes revealing more of his disciple’s abilities than Chen Yang would prefer—but his praise is rooted in sincere confidence. 1 8

He balances affection with caution. Duobao regularly scolds Chen Yang for dangerous decisions, restricts him from wandering before he has sufficient strength, and equips him with extensive life-saving treasures before allowing him to travel. 7 12 22

Despite his seniority, Duobao is sociable and informal with trusted companions. His exchanges with Hongyun and Zhenyuanzi show both a longstanding friendship and a willingness to be teased, particularly over his fondness for Ginseng Fruits. 7 8

Duobao is filial and loyal to Tongtian, regarding his departure from the Jie Sect to found the Many-Treasure Sect as emotionally difficult rather than as a rejection of his master. He remains committed to supporting the Jie Sect even after becoming an independent sect founder. 105 106

Although he usually appears peaceful and indulgent, Duobao possesses a mischievous and opportunistic side. He has manipulated Haotian’s curiosity to enter the Purple Cloud Blessed Land, gathered resources whenever rare opportunities arose, and revealed a fierce, taunting battle temperament when confronting powerful enemies. 54 57 148
