Background
Elder Zi is the artifact spirit of the Zixiao Cauldron, whose nature and cultivation are centered on the Artifact Refining Dao. He previously served Hongjun and retains knowledge from Hongjun’s era, including the Dao-Demon War, the Nine-Turn Profound Art’s origins, and the dangers of the Demon Dao 168 184 201.
After Chen Yang acquires the Zixiao Cauldron, Elder Zi asks him to stop using formal honorifics and simply call him “Elder Zi.” He immediately criticizes Chen Yang’s habit of forcing incompatible powers, formations, and bloodlines into his body without proper refinement 167.
Elder Zi becomes one of Chen Yang’s principal advisers after agreeing to temper his body with the Burning Flame. He removes accumulated impurities, purifies Chen Yang’s Formation Dao source, and warns him that advancement requires qualitative transformation rather than indiscriminate accumulation of materials 168.
When Chen Yang reveals his plan to refine the entire Human Realm into a Dao-Proving Grand Artifact, Elder Zi identifies its structural weaknesses: the Human Realm Land lacks a direct bond to Chen Yang, and its Formation Spirit alone cannot guarantee control over the artifact’s “body.” Despite these concerns, the unprecedented project rekindles his passion for artifact refinement, and he commits to remaining in the Human Realm to assist it 181 184.
Appearance
Elder Zi generally manifests from the Zixiao Cauldron as an elderly man.
- Often strokes his beard while evaluating Chen Yang’s plans or explaining ancient matters 180 183.
- Can appear as a projection outside the cauldron 278.
- His manner alternates between leisurely teasing and solemn authority.
Personality
Elder Zi is candid, experienced, and often exasperated by Chen Yang’s ambition. He regularly calls Chen Yang reckless, particularly when Chen Yang attempts to merge powerful but incompatible materials, formations, or Chaos-derived resources into himself 167 168 256.
Although skeptical of Chen Yang’s increasingly extreme plans, Elder Zi is deeply drawn to artifact refinement. Chen Yang’s Human Realm Grand Artifact captivates him because it offers the chance to refine something beyond conventional treasures: a miniature world of land, formations, civilization, and Human Dao 184.
He is also pragmatic. Elder Zi repeatedly warns that extraordinary methods carry irreversible risks, whether Chen Yang is extracting a Creation Jade Butterfly fragment, entering Chaos, refining the Great Wall, or sending an incarnation into the depths of Chaos 180 182 286.
Abilities & Skills
Artifact Refining Dao
As the Zixiao Cauldron’s artifact spirit, Elder Zi possesses exceptional mastery of artifact refinement and the principles governing a treasure’s quality, origin, and future potential.
- Evaluates the Human Realm Land as inferior to the former Buzhou Region in its ability to withstand Primordial Unity-level combat 183.
- Explains that a grand artifact’s ultimate potential depends on using superior materials before its initial completion, rather than attempting to correct poor foundations afterward 183.
- Assists Chen Yang in burning away the Great Wall’s mixed origins, demonic contamination, resentful souls, and conflicting Dao rhythms 186.
- Helps temper the Great Wall with Burning Demon God flames, rare divine materials, and Black-Yellow Qi 186 187.
- Remains invested in the Human Realm Grand Artifact because refining powerful treasures advances his own Artifact Refining Dao 184.
Body and Dao Tempering
Elder Zi can use powerful flames and artifact-refining methods to cleanse physical and spiritual impurities.
- Uses Burning Flame derived from the Burning Demon God’s source to temper Chen Yang’s body and Formation Dao 168.
- Refines Chen Yang’s formation patterns and purifies his Formation Dao source over several thousand years 168.
- Warns that Burning Demon God source is incompatible with Chen Yang’s Formation Dao and would corrupt his foundation if absorbed directly 168.
Knowledge of Cultivation and Great Paths
Elder Zi possesses extensive knowledge of the Mystic Sect, Chaos Demon Gods, Grand Dao rankings, and high-level cultivation methods.
- Explains that the Ninth Turn of the Nine-Turn Profound Art is ordinarily its limit; its final Nine-Nine Unification requires a Chaos Divine Object and may evolve an Innate Lifeform into a Chaos Lifeform 168.
- Describes Great Path transformation, in which different Dao traits can be merged into a transformed path, such as a Destruction Sword Dao 182.
- Explains that the Three Thousand Grand Daos have ranks connected to the strength and lingering imprints of ancient Great Path Demon Gods 221.
- Identifies Shi Hao’s path as possibly related to the legendary Great Path of Force, while admitting uncertainty 221 222.
- Reveals that the Great Path of Dreams may be a branch of the Great Path of Fate and that collective Willpower can produce effects resembling alterations of fate 185.
Chaos Resistance and Exploration
As a Half-Step Chaos Spiritual Treasure, Elder Zi can temporarily endure Chaos Qi and bypass restrictions connected to Hongjun’s Dao aura.
- Can pass through Hongjun’s seals, including the Buzhou Region’s seal, because Hongjun incorporated his Dao aura into grand artifacts 183.
- Can briefly resist Chaos Qi and retrieve materials from the Chaos-filled Buzhou Region 183.
- Guides Chen Yang through the Buzhou Seal and repeatedly warns him against approaching the increasingly pure Chaos Qi at its core 256 258.
- Conducts experiments that expose resources to Chaos Qi; most are assimilated, while a small fraction evolve into materials containing Chaos Aura 198.
Demon God Remnant Technique
Elder Zi knows a secret technique passed down from Yang Mei through Hongjun that temporarily awakens the residual vitality and memories in Chaos Demon God flesh.
- Uses Chaos Qi to awaken the traces within a Cold Demon God remnant 306 307.
- Explains that the technique does not resurrect the Demon God, but allows its Grand Dao resonance and fragmented memories to manifest before the vitality dissipates 306 308.
- Helps Chen Yang study the Cold Demon God’s cultivation method, including the Blood of the Grand Dao within a Demon God’s heart 307.
