Background

Er Wa originated as the second calabash on Xiao Teng's Innate Gourd Vine. While Xiao Teng was preparing to transform, his accumulated spiritual energy flowed into the second calabash instead. Er Wa emerged as a child with star-like eyes and unusually broad ears, joyfully announcing his birth despite Xiao Teng's disappointment at another delayed transformation. 4

Xiao Teng soon recognized that Er Wa possessed Clairvoyance and Wind-Listening Ear. His senses could observe distant places, identify concealed treasures, and detect approaching threats unless formations or barriers blocked him. Although Xiao Teng warned that Er Wa's combat ability was weaker than Da Wa's, he permitted him to leave Mount Buzhou and ordered Da Wa to protect him. 4

The brothers quickly became an effective exploration team: Er Wa found dangers and opportunities, while Da Wa removed the beasts guarding them. Their success established Er Wa as the family's primary scout and treasure locator. 4

He studies opponents for weaknesses, gives clear tactical directions, and supports his brothers rather than seeking to overpower enemies alone. 8 10 His protectiveness toward Xiao Teng can overcome this caution; when a sea beast attacked his father, Er Wa immediately charged in before being told to stand down. 35

He can also be provocative when facing enemies. During his fight with Azure Dragon's Second Uncle, he repeatedly taunted the dragon into reckless attacks, then exploited his superior prediction and agility. 36

Ferocious Beast Campaign

Er Wa becomes the group's battlefield observer during their first journey beyond Mount Buzhou. He exposes a ferocious beast's vulnerable neck, directs his brothers' coordinated assault, and helps them earn Great Dao Merit for killing it. 7 8

He later identifies the eyes of a Late Primordial Unity Golden Immortal ferocious beast as its weakness, enabling Third Baby to blind it with the Vajra Soul-Piercing Spear. 10

East Sea Search

While searching for the Three Immortal Isles, Er Wa patrols a thousand-li radius around Xiao Teng and warns him of approaching sea beasts. He later fights Azure Dragon's Second Uncle with the Radiant Divine Glory Spear, defeating the larger dragon through prediction, evasive movement, and precise strikes. 35 36

Er Wa cannot penetrate the Three Immortal Isles' concealment formation, but assists Xiao Teng and his siblings in breaking it once Seventh Gourd discovers the isles. 37
