Appearance
- Original appearance: Long black hair, pale skin, golden slit pupils, purple eyeshadow extending toward the sides of his nose, and blue-green magatama earrings. At his debut, he still wears Konoha ninja clothing and a village forehead protector 3.
- Serpentine features: A long tongue, an unnaturally extensible neck, and the ability to temporarily transform his lower body into a snake tail 3 79.
- Sage Mode: Curved horns at his temples, protruding fangs, cracks across his skin, an enlarged body, and four white-scaled sage snakes growing from his back. His sage chakra remains emerald green 120.
- Illness and exhaustion: Returns to Shadow Village visibly aged and frail after contracting Pestilence Release. Much later, performing Rinne Rebirth turns his hair white before he transfers into a new body 209 210 547.
- Later body: Retains a long-haired, beautiful masculine appearance after possessing Hashirama’s replica 547 555.
Personality
Orochimaru places the pursuit of truth above village loyalty, political ambition, and personal attachments. He openly admits responsibility for human disappearances and refuses Hiruzen’s offer to return to Konoha because a village cannot provide the answers he seeks. His enthusiasm for extraordinary bodies, bloodlines, and forbidden techniques repeatedly overrides concern for experimental subjects 4 34 61 241.
He is a calculating fighter and researcher rather than a reckless pursuer of power. During his first battle with Riu, he tests Kamui with widespread attacks and identifies the need for Riu to become tangible when attacking. Later, he prepares hidden survival measures, approaches resurrected legends cautiously, and develops specialized countermeasures against Ōtsutsuki physiology 3 117 216 812.
His attachment to Riu develops into sincere friendship. He volunteers to test lethal venom first and waits nearby to rescue him, while Riu comes to regard him as one of his few confidants. Orochimaru also retains complicated feelings toward former companions: he pleads for Hiruzen’s life, closes Manda’s eyes after his death, and apologizes to Jiraiya after sealing him 34 115 117 821.
He remains proud of his intelligence and quick learning. That confidence does not prevent him from recognizing exceptional talent: five-year-old Itachi’s reasoning and resolve unsettle him enough to make him sweat 80 821.
Abilities & Skills
Biological Research and Medical Technology
- Cellular transplantation: Proposes replacing Riu’s existing cells with Hashirama’s Original Cells rather than simple grafting, avoiding the limitations of rejection and backlash. Yamato’s surviving cells are identified as the catalyst needed to perfect the source material 4.
- Clinical testing: Uses scanning equipment to check Riu for lesions and transplant complications. His Body Energy detector quantifies cellular energy, but overloads when Riu’s reading reaches two million units 38.
- Bloodline research: Maintains classified records of Kekkei Genkai, Kekkei Tōta, their origins, and historical wielders. His attempts to reproduce Shamon’s Gold Release fail, despite his possession of suitable material for reanimation 166 167.
- Reconstructive procedures: Transplants Mito’s cells into Xiyang, grows replacement limbs for Might Guy from Hashirama Cells, strengthens Sasuke through a Hashirama-cell procedure, and reconstructs Amado’s body 146 554 555 789.
- Tailed-beast engineering: Prepares a procedure intended to remove a Tailed Beast without killing its host; later delivers the Two-Tails to Akatsuki. He also creates the Mini Tailed Beasts that eventually form Naruto’s Ten Treasures 476 480 1079.
- Ōtsutsuki genetics: Studies Xuanhuang’s corpse to uncover Branch Family Byakugan secrets. His proposed Hyūga enhancement can destroy the recipient’s meridian system and cause permanent disability; Neji volunteers despite the risk 692 693.
Bloodline Transference and Cursed Seals
- Blood-based modification: Injects Shisui and Itachi with Riu’s blood through forbidden transference procedures. Itachi’s Sharingan advances to three tomoe during the ordeal 79 80.
- Self-modification: Uses a drop of Riu’s blood to establish a genetic connection with him, surviving severe rejection and physical damage 112.
- Cursed Seal production: Extracts enzymes from Jūgo and stores them in snake fangs for injection. The seal is described as a lethal virus with a survival rate below one in ten 273.
- Limits: His ordinary seal is insufficient to treat terminally ill Kimimaro; he instead recommends Riu’s much stronger Jūgo-derived Sage Power 273.
- Connection to Karma: Later discussion identifies similarities between Cursed Seals and Ōtsutsuki life-information transfer. Unlike multiple Karma marks, separate Cursed Seals can sustain independent personalities 781.
Serpentine Techniques and Body Shedding
- Subduing Shadow Snake Hands: Produces snakes from his sleeves to attack, strangle, or restrain targets. He combines the technique with Lightning Release against Ryūchi Cave’s Snake Kings 3 79 115.
- Body-shedding substitution: Leaves his outer body behind and emerges through its mouth without hand seals. He uses it to escape Kamui, survive Shisui’s attacks, and substitute snakeskin for himself during Jiraiya’s sealing attempt 3 79 821.
- Extensible anatomy: Stretches his neck around opponents and attacks with bites or snakes released from his mouth 79 812.
- Summoning: Commands Manda despite their antagonistic relationship. His documented Rashōmon limit is three gates 3 220.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Art
- Continuous natural-energy absorption: His sage snakes replenish themselves during combat; one destroyed in Riu’s test quickly regenerates 120.
- Ultimate Breakthrough: Releases a central wind pillar accompanied by four additional pillars from his sage snakes, producing pressure that can immobilize distant opponents 120.
- Eight-Branched Serpent Technique: Creates an enormous eight-headed serpent that absorbs natural power. Its condensed chakra sphere exceeds a standard Eight-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb 120.
- Later applications: Uses Sage Art: Eight-Headed Wood Dragon Technique and a powerful water attack, Sage Art: Two Dragons Playing with Pearls: Yin-Yang Dance 812 821.
- Limits: His original body cannot safely withstand powerful sage energy. Even after learning Sage Mode, his transformation remains substantially weaker than Riu’s 112 120.
Reanimation, Resurrection, and Soul Research
- Impure World Reincarnation: Reanimates Hanzō, Hiruko, Shamon, the First Kages, Hashirama, Tobirama, and Mito using biological material and living sacrifices 116 165 168 210 216 294.
- Sage-enhanced summoning: Uses Sage Art: Impure World Reincarnation when summoning Hashirama and Mito 216 294.
- Control limitations: Tobirama breaks the reanimation contract and imprisons him. A later attempt to summon Hashirama also fails 222 649.
- Four-Snake Mutual Slaughter: Injects an overwhelming quantity of adrenaline through four sage snakes, rupturing blood vessels and causing organ failure. He uses it on himself to pursue knowledge beyond death 295 296.
- Samsara of Heavenly Life: Uses a borrowed Rinnegan to restore seven reanimated people to living bodies, nearly dying from the cost 547.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers his soul into Hashirama’s replica immediately afterward, preserving his life 547.
Ocular Powers, Wood Release, and Sealing
- Izanagi: Rewrites his death in the Immortal Snake Venom Pool using transplanted Sharingan and Senju tissue 117.
- Blade-Spreading Fate Reversal: Moves between marked targets. A Separation-Sealing Technique can prevent him from leaving a reinforced barrier 812 821.
- Telekinesis: Uses his left eye to redirect surviving wooden projectiles for repeated attacks 821.
- Wood Release: Cutting Clone: Generates cutting branches during his confrontation with Jiraiya 821.
- Dōjutsu suppression: Uses Tobirama’s Dōjutsu Power Seal on a secretly marked Jiraiya to interfere with his ocular abilities 821.
- Borrowed Kamui: Temporarily uses Riu’s right eye to release the Seven-Tails and Eight-Tails. The effort leaves him exhausted, and he restores the eye afterward 486.
Infiltration, Genjutsu, and Toxins
- Face-Changing Technique: Uses the peeled face of a murdered Konoha ninja to enter the village under a stolen identity 79.
- Mass Illusion: Mind-Bewitching Evil: Makes civilians suspicious and violent, drawing security forces away from the Uchiha district. Its broad range makes it ineffective against chūnin and stronger targets 79.
- Poison resistance: Modifies Riu’s constitution before entering Ryūchi Cave, allowing him to survive venom stronger than Hanzō’s. The cave’s toxins nevertheless remain dangerous to both men 115.
- Anti-Ōtsutsuki toxin: Temporarily suppresses regeneration without killing the target or reducing combat strength. His bite on Wushi creates the blood supply Hidan needs for a ritual attack 812.

History and Major Arcs
Konoha Researcher and Riu’s Recruitment
At the end of Konoha’s forty-seventh year, Orochimaru has lost the Hokage selection to Minato and secretly turned to human experimentation, though he has not yet defected. Danzō warns him that ANBU have noticed missing shinobi, prompting plans to abandon a southern-forest laboratory 3.
Riu attacks before he can leave. Orochimaru initially tries to steal his Sharingan, but Kamui defeats his countermeasures and tears off an arm. Facing a threat to his life, he agrees to help Riu obtain Hashirama’s authentic power. Riu then relocates his laboratory equipment to an underground base with White Zetsu assistance 3 4.
Kabuto attempts to separate him from Riu by contacting Hiruzen and then trying to incapacitate him. Orochimaru personally kills Kabuto, who secretly survives through Izanagi. After Riu defeats Hiruzen, Orochimaru confirms that cooperation was his own choice and secures his teacher’s release 32 33 34 241.
Uchiha Experiments and Defection
Orochimaru helps investigate an artificial blood relationship as a means of meeting the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan’s transplant requirements. Riu supplies Torune and Jūzō as experimental subjects while seeking a medical assistant 61.
He later infiltrates Konoha, creates civilian unrest, and forcibly administers Riu’s blood to Shisui and Itachi. During his escape, he marks Anko with a Cursed Seal. Hiruzen allows him to leave, but Jiraiya and Tsunade intercept him outside the village; Riu arrives to defend his subordinate 79 80 81.
Ryūchi Cave Expedition
After accepting Riu’s blood, Orochimaru accompanies him to Ryūchi Cave and explains the differences between the three major Sage Arts. Their forced entry subjects them to exceptionally dangerous trials: the Myriad Nest Snake Cavern, Six-Separation Maze Formation, and Immortal Snake Venom Pool 112 114 115 116 117.
The pair survive through coordinated combat, reanimation, Kamui, and Orochimaru’s prepared Izanagi. Orochimaru receives Sage Power from the White Snake Sage and subsequently demonstrates his own Sage Mode in a sparring test against Riu 116 117 118 120.
Historical Bloodlines and the Underworld
Orochimaru’s archives and preserved remains enable Riu to investigate Hiruko’s Chimera Technique and Shamon’s Gold Release. His search for the First Kages’ life matter exposes him to Byakuren’s Pestilence Release, leaving him near death until Riu restores him using the Dragon Vein and Sage Power 165 166 167 168 203 209 210.
He also reanimates Hashirama, Tobirama, and Mito as the crisis surrounding Kashyapa escalates. To find a way to break Hōriyasū, he deliberately sacrifices himself for a seven-day journey through Yomi and returns with the knowledge needed to summon Ubiji-ni 216 294 295 296 314 535.
Scientific Pillar of the Ninja Kingdom
Orochimaru’s work expands from forbidden research into national medical and defensive infrastructure. He investigates survivable Tailed Beast extraction, helps secure beasts while Riu is unavailable, restores seven historical figures to life, and survives the resurrection cost through a prepared body transfer 476 486 547.
In the subsequent era, he reconstructs Guy’s limbs, strengthens Sasuke, studies Ōtsutsuki bodies, and develops a cautious Hyūga enhancement program. He later joins the Ninja Kingdom’s main expeditionary force, supplies a regeneration-suppressing toxin against Wushi, and defeats Jiraiya through sealing tools, substitution, and carefully prepared marks 554 555 692 693 796 812 821.
Fifth Space-Time Counterpart
The Orochimaru described by Sarada belongs to the Fifth Space-Time, not Riu’s Seventh Space-Time. That counterpart survives Konoha’s destruction and gives Sarada a full-body Hashirama-cell transplant. After discovering that Soul Rings prevent anyone from remaining in the world for more than three hundred years, he ends his life to continue seeking truth elsewhere. Yu considers this a plausible fate for his own Orochimaru had they never met 1155.
Relationships
- Uchiha Riu / Yu — Leader, research partner, genetic brother, and close confidant. Their initially coerced alliance becomes a bond in which both risk themselves for the other 3 112 117 210.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Former assistant whose attempt to “rescue” him from Riu leads Orochimaru to kill him. Kabuto survives and turns his attachment into a long campaign against Riu 33 34 241.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher. Orochimaru asks Riu to spare him; Hiruzen later reciprocates by allowing Orochimaru to escape Konoha 34 81.
- Jiraiya — Former teammate and persistent opponent. Orochimaru exploits their shared history in battle but apologizes after sealing him, calling him his comrade 81 821.
- Tsunade — Former teammate who confronts him over Shizune’s disappearance and attacks alongside Jiraiya 81.
- Anko Mitarashi — Disciple whom he gives a Cursed Seal during his escape. Much later, he takes her with him when sheltering in Ryūchi Cave 81 660.
- Nawaki — Former student killed in an enemy trap during the Second Shinobi World War 223.
- Manda — Hostile but functional summon. Orochimaru respectfully closes his eyes after their deadly confrontation in Ryūchi Cave 3 115.
- White Snake Sage — Source of his Sage Power. He shows deference to her and accepts the requirement to comprehend Sage Mode himself 118.
- Tobirama Senju — Foundational researcher whose work Orochimaru expands upon. Tobirama both rebukes his careless use of forbidden techniques and praises his willingness to risk death for truth 222 223 296.
- Jūgo — Valuable Cursed Seal research subject. Riu later assures Jūgo that Orochimaru has not forgotten him 179 273.
- Uchiha Shisui and Uchiha Itachi — Exceptionally talented targets of his blood-transference experiments; Itachi forces him to accept conditions protecting Sasuke 79 80.
- Shin Uchiha — Former volunteer test subject with unusual transplant compatibility; a source of cloned Sharingan and later a secretly monitored ritual candidate 314.
- Neji Hyūga — Volunteer selected for an Ōtsutsuki-inspired genetic enhancement trial because of his unusual potential and Momoshiki’s Karma 692 693.

“Everything I do serves one purpose alone: the pursuit of truth...” 241
“Truth never stops moving forward.” 821
Trivia
- His early bounty is 55 million ryō, slightly higher than Jiraiya’s and Tsunade’s; the narration attributes the difference to his dangerous experiments and infamy 10.
- He hides his Izanagi Sharingan beneath his armpit because he considers an exposed arm-mounted eye aesthetically unacceptable 117.
- His Senju-derived tissue and White Snake Power do not make him immune to Pestilence Release 210.
- He preserves Momoshiki’s eyes inside swallowed glass containers rather than leaving them on the corpse, frustrating Urashiki’s attempt to obtain them 660.
