Academy graduation

Nawaki first appears during the Ninja Academy graduation period, publicly defending Uchiha You from classmates who claimed You could only become Tsunade's disciple through favoritism. He argues that You is already a genuine genius and offers to stand up for him in the future. 18

He graduates alongside the other Academy students and is later assigned to Orochimaru's team with You and Hyuga Reiko. 18 19

Orochimaru's team

Orochimaru's first assessment for the team becomes a C-rank extermination mission against a mountain bandit group. Nawaki initially struggles with the reality of killing, but follows You and Reiko in completing the mission, including the elimination of the bandits' remaining families. Orochimaru later criticizes Nawaki's hesitation as a potentially fatal weakness. 20 22

During a B-rank mission to escort Sand Village ninja, Nawaki serves with You and Reiko under Orochimaru. He is outmatched by the Hidden Rain attackers at the Hidden Hot Water Village, but tries to protect You by urging him to find Orochimaru rather than remain and fight beside the team. 26 27

Nawaki witnesses You defeat multiple Chunin-level opponents using overwhelming taijutsu, the Sharingan, and Monster Strength Fist. The disparity frustrates him, particularly because he has trained in Monster Strength Fist for years but cannot properly use it. 28 29

After returning from the escort mission, he seeks advice from You about training and is misled into believing that You's overwhelming strength comes solely from ordinary hard work and chakra control. He also nearly bankrupts himself by paying for a barbecue meal for You and Reiko. 30

Nawaki later reveals You's extreme weighted-training regimen to Tsunade after attempting to imitate it himself. Tsunade confirms that the weights were too heavy for Nawaki's body to handle safely, while You blames Nawaki for making him the subject of Tsunade's examination. 34

Approaching war

After You completes a separate S-rank supply mission, Nawaki is jealous of the experience but remains eager to grow stronger. He and Reiko both declare their ambition to become Hokage, while You organizes the team around Reiko's reconnaissance role and the direct-combat roles of himself and Nawaki. 42

During the war, Nawaki works as Orochimaru's messenger between Konoha and the camp. He summons You from the hospital when Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya debate whether You should remain a battlefield medic or accept another assignment. 47

Second Shinobi World War

Nawaki secretly follows Orochimaru to the Amegakure front, hoping to prove himself in battle and become Hokage. He claims to have mastered Monster Strength Fist, but You warns him that the technique alone cannot protect him against Ibuse's poison, Hanzo's strength, or the danger of being captured as Tsunade's brother. 59

Although he initially insists on fighting, Nawaki accepts You's assessment after losing a test of strength and agrees to operate beside him on the battlefield's outskirts. 60 The scale of the war nevertheless shocks him; surrounded by constant deaths from explosions and ninjutsu, he freezes until You strikes him back to his senses and pulls him from immediate danger. 61

Orochimaru later keeps Nawaki close for protection while using him to carry secret correspondence between Konoha and the front lines. 119

Political succession and command

As the older generation prepares to relinquish authority, the Third Hokage appoints Nawaki, You, and Minato as the next generation of Hokage advisors. Nawaki is overwhelmed by the responsibility and is told that he must help uphold Hashirama's legacy while assisting Minato in governing Konoha. 390

He subsequently represents Konoha alongside You and Minato at negotiations in the Land of Iron concerning the division of Kumogakure's territory and resources. 409 After Minato becomes Fourth Hokage, Nawaki is entrusted with command of a limited Konoha force sent to support Akatsuki's operation against Kumogakure, an assignment meant to test his leadership and develop his confidence. 415

By this period, You judges Nawaki to possess abundant Senju chakra, complete command of Monster Strength Fist's essentials, and formidable offensive-ninjutsu potential. 416

Later conflicts

During the conflict around the radioactive lake, Nawaki accompanies Tsunade and Konoha shinobi investigating the deaths of reconnaissance personnel. He and Tsunade combine Monster Strength Fist with Water Release: Water Formation Wall against the unidentified Uchiha You, though neither recognizes him as their former companion. 484 485

The Konoha group is overwhelmed by You's Lightning Release, Snake Senjutsu, and giant serpents. Nawaki is earnest, competitive, and openly ambitious. He repeatedly states his intention to become Hokage and measure himself against the accomplishments of his grandfather and sister. 20 42

He can be impulsive and insecure when confronted with You's rapid growth, especially in Medical Ninjutsu and Monster Strength Fist. Nevertheless, he shows loyalty under pressure: he defends You from slander, participates in Orochimaru's brutal missions, and attempts to keep You from facing overwhelming enemies alone. 18 27 42
