Academy graduation

Nawaki first appears during the Ninja Academy graduation period, publicly defending Uchiha You from classmates who claimed You could only become Tsunade's disciple through favoritism. He argues that You is already a genuine genius and offers to stand up for him in the future. 18

He graduates alongside the other Academy students and is later assigned to Orochimaru's team with You and Hyuga Reiko. 18 19

Orochimaru's team

Orochimaru's first assessment for the team becomes a C-rank extermination mission against a mountain bandit group. Nawaki initially struggles with the reality of killing, but follows You and Reiko in completing the mission, including the elimination of the bandits' remaining families. Orochimaru later criticizes Nawaki's hesitation as a potentially fatal weakness. 20 22

During a B-rank mission to escort Sand Village ninja, Nawaki serves with You and Reiko under Orochimaru. He is outmatched by the Hidden Rain attackers at the Hidden Hot Water Village, but tries to protect You by urging him to find Orochimaru rather than remain and fight beside the team. 26 27

Approaching war

After You completes a separate S-rank supply mission, Nawaki is jealous of the experience but remains eager to grow stronger. He and Reiko both declare their ambition to become Hokage, while You organizes the team around Reiko's reconnaissance role and the direct-combat roles of himself and Nawaki. 42

During the war, Nawaki works as Orochimaru's messenger between Konoha and the camp. He summons You from the hospital when Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya debate whether You should remain a battlefield medic or accept another assignment. 47

Nawaki is earnest, competitive, and openly ambitious. He repeatedly states his intention to become Hokage and measure himself against the accomplishments of his grandfather and sister. 20 42
