Background / History

The Elucidation Sect is a Saint’s great sect whose Twelve Golden Immortals are regarded as among the eventual victors of the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. Within Blue Star’s Secret Realm selection system, it is considered a dangerous but highly rewarding route: its historical mortality rate is close to 40%, but survivors commonly gain greater opportunities than entrants to the Human Sect. Most of Lin Yuan’s class chooses it for this balance of risk and reward 1.

During the Shang–Zhou conflict, the sect supports West Qi and repeatedly sends Qi Refiners and Immortals into the war. Its intervention against the Intercepting Sect turns local disputes—such as Nezha’s near-fatal shooting of Biyun—into a wider factional confrontation 4 11 12.

The sect initially relies on its superior cultivation, individual magical treasures, formation-breaking tools, and ambushes to suppress Intercepting Sect forces. However, Lin Yuan’s repeated interventions prevent the expected deaths of Shiji, the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island, the Ten Heavenly Lords, Zhao Gongming, and others, forcing the Elucidation Sect to continually revise its methods 13 24 26 41.

The Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation causes lasting damage to the sect’s second-generation core. The Twelve Golden Immortals survive, but their damaged foundations cannot be fully restored through only one or two years of secluded cultivation. Several remain in recovery when Yuanshi later reassesses Lin Yuan’s influence, while other core disciples become more restrained 46 91.

As more Intercepting Sect disciples escape their fatal tribulations, the Investiture of the Gods begins seeking replacement candidates elsewhere. Han Dulong and Xue Ehu become the first two Elucidation Sect disciples claimed in the altered sequence, undermining the faction’s historically stable risk assessment. Researchers clarify that both had appeared in earlier tribulation records, but their death nodes and karmic circumstances have now been disrupted 95 96 101 103.

Organization

Figure / Group Position and involvement
Yuanshi Tianzun Saint associated with the sect; intervenes after the Twelve Golden Immortals lose much of their cultivation in the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation 43 45 46. Later identifies Lin Yuan’s manipulation of causal chains and survival practices as a strategic threat, choosing an open disciple contest rather than a secret attack 90 91.
Twelve Golden Immortals The sect’s renowned core disciples and a foundation of its inheritance. They collectively assault the Ten Ultimate Formation and later enter the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation 1 27 41 46. Several subsequently remain in seclusion to recover their damaged cultivation 91.
Guangchengzi A leading Golden Immortal who coordinates attacks on the Ten Ultimate Formation, enters the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation, and later confronts Holy Mother Huo Ling at Jiepai Pass with the Heaven-Flipping Seal 26 43 70 71. Helps arrange the younger disciples’ public challenge to Lin Yuan under Yuanshi’s direction 91.
Taiyi Nezha’s master and a member of the Twelve Golden Immortals; shields Nezha during the Chentang Pass dispute and later participates in the conflict against the Ten Ultimate Formation 4 27.
Yun Zhongzi A renowned Blessed Virtue Immortal of the sect who guards the final lock of the Dragon-Severing Ridge fire formation and insists that Wen Zhong’s fate is predetermined 65 66.
Nezha Taiyi’s disciple; his reckless use of the Heaven-and-Earth Bow nearly kills Biyun and begins the Chentang Pass conflict 4.
Daoxing Tianzun Master of Han Dulong and Xue Ehu. Confronts Golden Spirit Holy Mother after both disciples enter the Investiture of the Gods; a pill from him later helps Lin Yuan recover his injured Primordial Spirit 94 102 103.
Chen Yue Blue Star entrant and third-generation core disciple. Investigates whether redistributed tribulation could threaten the sect, later demonstrates Early Taiyi cultivation and Jade Clarity sword techniques in a formal duel with Lin Yuan 85 94.
Han Dulong Third-generation disciple under Daoxing Tianzun. Dies during a struggle over West Qi’s military supplies and becomes the first Elucidation Sect replacement candidate visibly claimed in the reshuffled tribulation 94 95 96.
Xue Ehu Han Dulong’s fellow disciple under Daoxing Tianzun. Attempts to kill Lin Yuan during a public challenge and is killed in retaliation, becoming the second Elucidation Sect disciple claimed in the altered sequence 94 101 103.
Blue Star entrants Include more than forty classmates who follow Chen Yue’s faction choice. Entrants are scattered among different masters, cultivation grounds, and affiliated forces rather than automatically remaining together 80 92.

Doctrine and Battlefield Methods

Jade Clarity Arts

The sect’s Golden Immortals employ Jade Clarity Immortal Light as both defense and offense. A second-generation disciple withstands the Heaven-Absolute Formation’s lightning with Jade Clarity Immortal Light, while several Golden Immortals combine their Daoist arts during large-scale assaults 24 27.

Within the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation, the Twelve Golden Immortals combine their Jade Clarity Immortal Light in an attempt to break out. Their shared defenses weaken as the formation disrupts mana circulation and erodes their Three Flowers and Five Qi 42 43.

Chen Yue’s formal duel with Lin Yuan demonstrates several younger-generation techniques 94:

  • Twelve genuine sword phantoms — A multi-sword offensive technique.
  • White Jade Seal — Suppresses space and movement to support his sword attacks.
  • Three-Powers Jade Clarity Sword — Seals escape routes from three directions through an interconnected sword formation.

Lin Yuan defeats these combinations by distracting Chen Yue, identifying their energy flows, and opening gaps in their suppression rather than relying on external reinforcements 94.

Formation Analysis and Countermeasures

The Elucidation Sect studies enemy formations before committing its strongest members.

  • West Qi cultivators first probe the Ten Ultimate Formation with treasures tailored to individual formations, including tools against lightning, wind, and ice 23.
  • Formation-revealing treasures allow the sect to identify Formation Eyes and power routes, though Lin Yuan’s revisions make those observations rapidly obsolete 24 26.
  • A Formation-Breaking Ring is used to block the central channels of the linked Ten Ultimate Formation, but newly installed side routes allow Zhao Jiang to escape 25.
  • After repeated failures against individual formations, Guangchengzi concludes that the entire set must be assaulted at once 26 27.
  • Before entering the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation collectively, the sect observes it from outside and sends a single Golden Immortal inside to test its effects. His return reveals that it can damage cultivation directly 41.
  • During the collective attempt, the Twelve remain together to resist separation and use Taiyi’s treasure to stabilize distorted space. Their attacks briefly expose weaknesses, but Lin Yuan reinforces the outer foundations before they can exploit them 42.
  • The methods developed against the Ten Ultimate Formation prove largely ineffective against the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation: they cannot locate its Formation Eye, separate its controllers, or overcome its continuous cultivation erosion 42 43.

Treasures and Direct Suppression

The sect does not rely on formations alone.

  • Heaven-Flipping Seal — Guangchengzi’s overwhelming treasure. It destroys a mountain with one missed strike and is later used through concealed spatial positioning to target Holy Mother Huo Ling and Lin Yuan 70 71.
  • Jade mirror — Used by an Elucidation Sect Daoist to expose hidden formation patterns and identify crucial nodes in the Heaven-Absolute Formation 24.
  • Formation-disrupting talismans — Slow or sever the transfer of specialized power between the Ten Ultimate Formations 23.
  • Immortal-Binding Rope and Jade Clarity Restrictions — Restrain Yu Yuan before his attempted execution, suppressing magical power and escape techniques without primarily sealing his Primordial Spirit 81.
  • Jade Clarity Sword Qi — Remains lodged in Huo Ling’s shoulder after Jiepai Pass. She subsequently removes the hostile Dharma Power completely while recuperating under Duobao’s protection 76.

Sect Outlook

Yuanshi emphasizes order, hierarchy, and preserving the Elucidation Sect’s inheritance. Tongtian characterizes the philosophical divide between them more bluntly: Yuanshi objects when the Twelve Golden Immortals suffer severe losses, while Tongtian maintains that disciples who voluntarily enter a formation must accept victory or defeat 46.

The sect’s representatives frequently invoke ordained fate and Heaven’s order when criticizing Intercepting Sect involvement in the Shang–Zhou war. Zhao Gongming challenges this position by noting that the Elucidation Sect had already sent its own disciples into the conflict 30.

Even after numerous historical deviations, some disciples continue arguing that the Intercepting Sect’s overall fate cannot be changed by a single Taiyi cultivator. Chen Yue challenges this assumption by asking who will fill the divine positions if the originally doomed disciples survive, and whether Elucidation Sect members are themselves vulnerable participants in the calamity 81 85.

The widening tribulation eventually changes practical behavior. Peripheral lineages receive warnings to avoid Shang–Zhou entanglements, while disciples preparing for West Qi missions begin considering the depth of their karmic ties, the likelihood of encountering Intercepting Sect core members, and whether to bring companions. Yuanshi does not rebuke these precautions, recognizing that reliance on old experience has become dangerous 98.

Conflict with the Intercepting Sect

Arc Elucidation Sect involvement
Chentang Pass dispute Taiyi attempts to minimize Nezha’s attack on Biyun and refuses Shiji’s demand to take Nezha for investigation. Lin Yuan responds by summoning Golden Spirit Holy Mother, bringing both sects into direct conflict 4.
Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island An Elucidation Sect Golden Immortal attempts to lure and isolate Wang Mo, but Lin Yuan keeps all four sages together and turns the intended ambush into a four-against-one battle 13 14.
Ten Ultimate Formation The sect probes, disrupts, and repeatedly attacks the Ten Heavenly Lords’ formations. Its tactics force Lin Yuan and the Ten Heavenly Lords to develop linked power routes, evacuation patterns, and mobile Formation Eyes 22 25 26.
Twelve Golden Immortals’ assault All Twelve Golden Immortals attack the linked Ten Ultimate Formation together. They fail to kill any formation master and withdraw after the Intercepting Sect repeatedly shifts positions and rescues endangered controllers 27 28.
Zhao Gongming’s challenge The Twelve Golden Immortals cannot defeat Zhao Gongming directly while he wields the Twenty-Four Sea-Calming Pearls. Afterward, the sect seeks a specialized countermeasure rather than continuing open combat 30 31.
Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation The Twelve Golden Immortals enter Yunxiao’s formation and suffer severe losses to their Three Flowers and Five Qi. Yuanshi personally descends, but Tongtian’s arrival prevents further intervention and forces the Elucidation Sect to withdraw 41 43 45 46.
Dragon-Severing Ridge Yun Zhongzi maintains the concealed fire formation intended to claim Wen Zhong. Lin Yuan dismantles its hidden locks and rejects Yun Zhongzi’s claim that Wen Zhong’s death is fixed 65 66. Wen Zhong survives and the Shang army retreats, with more than half of the Eight Heaven-Reaching Divine Fire Pillars destroyed 69.
Jiepai Pass Guangchengzi confronts Holy Mother Huo Ling, patiently using the Heaven-Flipping Seal to exploit openings created by her Fire Dragon Soldiers and Golden Radiance Crown 69 70 71. Lin Yuan’s intervention and Duobao’s arrival allow Huo Ling to withdraw and recover, preventing Guangchengzi from obtaining her crown and using it in the expected Biyou Palace escalation 76 78 79.
Yu Yuan’s attempted execution Yu Yuan is held by West Qi under an Immortal-Binding Rope and Jade Clarity Restrictions, with powerful Elucidation Sect cultivators present. Lin Yuan disrupts Lu Ya’s soul-targeting attack with the Treasure-Dropping Coin, breaks the restraint, and rescues Yu Yuan despite the elders’ expectation that he would enter the Investiture of the Gods 79 81 85.
Younger disciples’ public contest Yuanshi authorizes open challenges intended to weaken Lin Yuan’s influence without provoking Tongtian through assassination. During a temporary ceasefire, Lin Yuan demonstrates independent combat ability and defeats Chen Yue in forty-four moves 91 92 94.
Xue Ehu’s lethal challenge Xue Ehu turns a public challenge into an attempt to kill Lin Yuan and dies when Lin Yuan retaliates. Daoxing Tianzun and Golden Spirit Holy Mother arrive afterward, creating a dispute over responsibility for his death 101 102 103.

Relationships

  • Intercepting Sect — Principal rival during the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. Their conflict intensifies from disputes between disciples into confrontations involving both Yuanshi and Tongtian 4 43 46. Despite the redirected tribulation, Tongtian rejects deliberately hunting Elucidation Sect disciples to fill the list; his sect’s policy remains survival and rescue, with decisive retaliation permitted against lethal attacks 97 104.
  • West Qi — Receives Elucidation Sect support against Great Shang; the sect’s disciples and Qi Refiners repeatedly enter West Qi’s military campaigns 11 12. Participation in its battles and logistical missions becomes a source of increasingly dangerous karmic ties as the tribulation changes 85 95 98.
  • Great Shang — Opposing mortal power supported by Wen Zhong and Intercepting Sect forces 11 27.
  • Human Sect — Another selectable Secret Realm faction, distinguished from the Elucidation Sect by its higher survival rate and comparatively limited opportunities 1.
  • Lu Ya — Not a disciple of the Elucidation Sect; he explicitly states that he has no master-disciple ties to it, despite appearing on West Qi’s side 34. His attempted execution of Yu Yuan occurs in the presence of Elucidation Sect and West Qi cultivators 81 85.
  • Heavenly Court / Haotian — Tracks the vacancies created by surviving tribulation candidates and observes fate moving toward the Elucidation Sect. Haotian refuses to warn the sect, treating advance detection as the responsibility of those involved 89 90. Han Dulong’s arrival subsequently activates one previously vacant divine position 96.
  • Western Sect — Another Saint-led faction increasingly exposed to the same redistributed tribulation pressure. By Lin Yuan’s Daluo breakthrough, both its core members and the Elucidation Sect’s second generation face an expanding search for candidates 99 124.
  • Lin Yuan — Initially regarded as an irritating source of tactical reversals, he is eventually recognized by Yuanshi as a strategic threat whose warnings, rescues, and organizational reforms alter causal chains throughout the calamity. Lin Yuan denies trying to exchange Elucidation Sect lives for his own faction’s safety, an explanation Chen Yue accepts 91 96.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reversal of Expected Victories

The Elucidation Sect begins the calamity with the historical advantage: it is associated with the eventual victors, while the Intercepting Sect is expected to be destroyed. Lin Yuan’s survival-focused strategy steadily undermines that expectation by preventing the deaths that would normally draw further Intercepting Sect disciples into the conflict 1 39 50.

By the time of the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation, Taiyi directly associates Lin Yuan with a string of Elucidation Sect setbacks: Shiji survives, the Four Sages survive, the Ten Heavenly Lords survive, and Zhao Gongming survives after reclaiming the Treasure-Dropping Coin 41.

Huo Ling’s survival interrupts another expected chain of escalation. Without her death, Guangchengzi cannot obtain the Golden Radiance Crown as a relic and carry it to Biyou Palace, where its karmic significance would draw in Duobao, Tongtian, and larger sectarian forces. Tongtian identifies this rescue as giving the Intercepting Sect time to improve formations, coordination, military organization, and recovery rather than entering a premature Saint-level confrontation 76 78 79.

Response to Historical Deviation

The sect increasingly recognizes Lin Yuan as the source of abnormal developments. Yun Zhongzi states that Lin Yuan’s rescue of the Ten Heavenly Lords, Zhao Gongming, the Three Cloud Sisters, and the Four Demon Generals has shifted the momentum of the calamity itself 66.

On Blue Star, the growing number of altered events linked to Elucidation Sect defeats and Intercepting Sect survivals raises the Historical Deviation Rate to 23.8%. Chen Yue, who chose the Elucidation Sect, becomes unsettled by Lin Yuan’s rise and by the possibility that the supposedly doomed Intercepting Sect route has become the more successful choice 59.

Wen Zhong’s escape increases the deviation rate to 31.1%. After witnessing Yu Yuan’s rescue, Chen Yue begins compiling the survivals as a connected pattern rather than treating them as isolated battlefield incidents. He investigates how many Elucidation Sect participants have begun accumulating tribulation aura, recognizing that historical victory may no longer guarantee safety 69 85.

Yuanshi independently detects tribulation pressure reaching his sect and reviews Lin Yuan’s role. He concludes that Lin Yuan’s danger lies less in his personal cultivation than in making powerful allies avoid fatal mistakes and disentangling chains of cause and effect. Although Guangchengzi asks whether Lin Yuan should be dealt with, Yuanshi rejects a secret attack against Tongtian’s valued Dao Seed Candidate and instead chooses a sanctioned contest between younger disciples 90 91.

Public Contest and the Collapse of Old Expectations

The contest takes place during a temporary Shang–Zhou ceasefire and draws younger disciples, affiliated cultivators, and Blue Star entrants. Lin Yuan’s former classmates are shocked to find him at Mid-Taiyi cultivation, accompanied by several figures their records had marked as doomed. Some Elucidation Sect challengers nevertheless assume that his reputation rests primarily on formations, warnings, and senior allies 92.

Lin Yuan’s direct performance undermines that assumption. In his formal duel with Chen Yue, he dismantles Jade Clarity sword combinations and wins on the forty-fourth move. Chen Yue accepts defeat and acknowledges that their classmates had been wrong to dismiss Lin Yuan’s faction choice. Han Dulong and Xue Ehu react less comfortably, attempting to minimize his success despite the evident strength of his integrated combat methods 94.

Redistributed Tribulation and Disciple Deaths

Han Dulong’s death provides the first visible confirmation that the reshuffled calamity can claim an Elucidation Sect replacement candidate. While escorting West Qi’s supplies, he becomes involved in a clash with Shang forces and unaffiliated cultivators. After blocking poisonous fire, an improbably deflected fragment of a broken flying sword pierces his neck and destroys his sea of consciousness and Primordial Spirit. His true spirit is immediately taken by the Investiture of the Gods 95.

The event is not an assassination by Lin Yuan or an Intercepting Sect core expert. Lin Yuan’s group observes the changing tribulation without intervening, and both sides withdraw after the death. Xue Ehu grieves over Han Dulong’s body, while Chen Yue helps tend to it and confronts Lin Yuan about the consequences of saving his own faction. Lin Yuan states that his purpose is loyalty and rescue, not choosing other people to die, and Chen Yue accepts this distinction 95 96.

Blue Star’s Monitoring Stone records the first substitution in faction tribulation-candidate rosters and a significant rise in Elucidation Sect mortality risk. Its assessed danger remains below the Intercepting Sect’s at that point, but the previously stable historical advantage is no longer treated as reliable protection 96.

Xue Ehu later becomes the second disciple claimed in the altered sequence after attempting to kill Lin Yuan during a challenge. His death follows a direct chain of hostile choices and retaliatory self-defense rather than Han Dulong’s apparently accidental convergence. Elucidation Sect observers conclude that Lin Yuan is merciful toward fair opponents but lethal when someone tries to kill him, and resolve not to use underhanded tactics against him 101 103.

Daoxing Tianzun disputes responsibility with Golden Spirit Holy Mother, emphasizing that both his disciples have entered the list. She distinguishes Han Dulong’s death in the changing tribulation from Xue Ehu’s deliberate attack and demands the sword talisman from the incident 102. Subsequent Blue Star analysis confirms another increase in the sect’s danger index and notes that the altered deaths differ from previous records in timing and karmic origin 103.

Current Position

At the confrontation at Jiepai Pass, the Elucidation Sect remains an active and dangerous force. Guangchengzi shifts from targeting Holy Mother Huo Ling to directly attacking Lin Yuan with the Heaven-Flipping Seal after Lin Yuan repeatedly exposes his tactics 71. Huo Ling’s eventual rescue prevents that battle from becoming the expected catalyst for a larger confrontation at Biyou Palace 76 79.

By Lin Yuan’s appointment as the Intercepting Sect’s Daoist Heir, at least thirty-seven members of that sect have escaped imminent investiture fates. Blue Star records a 41.6% Historical Deviation Rate, while replacement candidates and newly shifting karmic threads extend into the Elucidation Sect and other factions 99.

As of Lin Yuan’s Early Daluo Golden Immortal breakthrough, the deviation rate reaches 53.4% and the Intercepting Sect’s predicted destruction probability falls to 28%. The Investiture of the Gods increasingly seeks stronger candidates, including second-generation Elucidation Sect disciples. Yuanshi and Guangchengzi recognize that Lin Yuan is harder to counter, while gray tribulation threads appear near the sect’s core where they had not previously reached 124.
