Background

West Qi gathers increasing numbers of Qi Refiners as the Shang–Zhou conflict escalates. Its alliance with the Elucidation Sect turns what might have been a mortal war into a sustained conflict among immortals. Wen Zhong identifies the growing presence of Elucidation Sect disciples as a direct threat to Great Shang's existing forces. 11

Its battlefield doctrine repeatedly centers on isolating Intercepting Sect cultivators, exploiting individual weaknesses, and using prepared treasures or formations to secure kills. This strategy initially targets the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island, then the Ten Heavenly Lords, Zhao Gongming, the Three Cloud Sisters, and the Four Demon Generals. 12 18 52 57

West Qi remains a major front in the conflict even after those operations fail. Its strengthened forces later compel the Shang army to withdraw, while its territory becomes the site of Yu Yuan's attempted execution and Lü Yue's plague campaign. 59 80 104

Military Strategy

  • Isolation and ambush — West Qi attempts to lure Intercepting Sect disciples away from allies, trap them in formations, and overwhelm them with concealed higher-realm cultivators. 13 16 18
  • Targeted counters — Its cultivators prepare treasures tailored to enemy abilities, including formation-revealing tools, the Silence-Suppressing Pearl against the Jasper Pipa, and the Treasure-Locking Rope against the Mixed Element Umbrella. 24 55 56
  • Reconnaissance before escalation — Before committing major forces, West Qi sends Qi Refiners to test and study the modified Ten Ultimate Formation. 22 23
  • Coordinated pressure — After piecemeal tactics fail, the Twelve Golden Immortals attack all ten Ultimate Formations simultaneously and later direct simultaneous attacks against multiple Demon Generals. 27 28 57
  • Use of specialist allies — West Qi relies on Xiao Sheng and Cao Bao's Treasure-Dropping Coin to counter Zhao Gongming's Sea-Calming Pearls, and Lu Ya's hidden curse to target Zhao Gongming indirectly. 32 36
  • Prepared terrain and pursuit — As the Shang army withdraws, West Qi's pursuers threaten its rear guard. An earth-fire formation has been prepared beneath the tactically important Dragon-Severing Ridge, where Wen Zhong plans to hold them off. 59 60
  • Execution methods against resilient captives — After beheading, fire, water, and lightning fail to kill Yu Yuan, West Qi and its allies summon Lu Ya and his Immortal-Slaying Gourd to the execution platform. 79 80
  • Plague countermeasures — After Lü Yue sickens much of its front line, West Qi distributes Plague-Repelling Pills, receives Elucidation Sect Plague-Cleansing Talismans and Water-Art Purifying Pills, and raises a protective light over its camp. 104 107

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment of the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island

Wen Zhong seeks reinforcements after learning that West Qi is attracting more Qi Refiners and Elucidation Sect support. The Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island answer his request and immediately defeat West Qi's frontline cultivators through coordinated combat. 11 12

West Qi then adopts a strategy of provoking, separating, and ambushing the four Sages. Lin Yuan repeatedly exposes these traps, preventing Wang Mo, Yang Sen, Gao Yougan, and Li Xingba from being defeated individually. 13 16 18

After the four survive their death tribulations, West Qi ceases its frequent attacks against them for a time. 19

Conflict over the Ten Ultimate Formation

After the Ten Heavenly Lords arrive at the Shang camp, West Qi tests their Ten Ultimate Formation with cultivators carrying specialized countermeasures. Lin Yuan's proposal to link the ten separate formations makes those individual counters unreliable, as each formation can borrow power from the others. 20 22 23

The Elucidation Sect escalates by sending one of the Twelve Golden Immortals into the Heaven-Absolute Formation. The attacker nearly kills Qin Wan by exploiting the formation's support routes, but Lin Yuan reroutes the incoming power and saves him. 24

West Qi continues adapting its formation-breaking methods, forcing the Ten Heavenly Lords and Lin Yuan to repeatedly revise the linked formation. The conflict culminates in the Twelve Golden Immortals attacking all ten formations together; they fail to kill any of the Ten Heavenly Lords and ultimately withdraw. 25 26 27 28 29

Zhao Gongming Campaign

West Qi faces a major escalation when Zhao Gongming arrives to support Great Shang. The Twelve Golden Immortals are unable to overcome his twenty-four Sea-Calming Pearls in open battle and retreat after being overwhelmed. 30 31

Unable to defeat him directly, West Qi employs Xiao Sheng and Cao Bao. Xiao Sheng's Treasure-Dropping Coin successfully disrupts Zhao Gongming's control of a Sea-Calming Pearl, exposing the danger of the specialized treasure. 32

Lu Ya later attempts to kill Zhao Gongming through a concealed Nail-Head Seven-Arrows Book ritual. Lin Yuan, the Ten Heavenly Lords, the Four Sages, and other Intercepting Sect members trace the curse to its hidden altar before it can claim Zhao Gongming's life. 36

Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation

After Zhao Gongming's near-death experience, the Three Cloud Sisters establish the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation against West Qi and the Twelve Golden Immortals. The formation traps and weakens the Golden Immortals by scattering their Five Qi and shaving away their Three Flowers. 40 41 42 43

West Qi's side is only spared further losses when Yuanshi Tianzun intervenes. Tongtian arrives in response, protects the Three Cloud Sisters, and forces a withdrawal rather than allowing the conflict to become a Saint-level battle. 46 47

Tongtian subsequently orders several Intercepting Sect immortals away from the battlefield and instructs Wen Zhong to handle the mortal war primarily through mortal means, reporting any renewed Elucidation Sect immortal intervention. 47

Jiameng Pass Campaign

West Qi later turns its attention to the Four Demon Generals at Jiameng Pass. It first studies Mo Lihong's Mixed Element Umbrella, then launches a coordinated attempt to burn, bind, and pierce the treasure's restrictions. Lin Yuan identifies the true threat and helps the generals repel the ambush. 52 53

Further attempts to split the four brothers apart fail after Lin Yuan establishes a fixed mutual-support formation. West Qi's plans to neutralize Mo Lihai's Jasper Pipa and immobilize the Mixed Element Umbrella are both reversed through deliberate bait-and-counterattack strategies. 54 55 56

West Qi finally launches simultaneous attacks against Mo Liqing and Mo Lishou. The Four Demon Generals remain united, rescue the Flower-Fox Marten, repel a Golden Immortal, and sever all four of their death trajectories. West Qi retreats without securing a kill. 57

West Qi launches no further major immortal assault on Jiameng Pass during Lin Yuan's remaining seven days there, though mortal probing attacks continue. 58

Dragon-Severing Ridge

West Qi's strengthened forces compel Wen Zhong to withdraw the Shang army from the main front. Expecting pursuit, he chooses Dragon-Severing Ridge for the rear guard. Lin Yuan discovers that its earth veins have been artificially redirected into a concealed fire formation, which activates before the rear guard can leave. 59 60

The Four Demon Generals arrive to help disrupt the formation and protect the Shang retreat. Lin Yuan dismantles its supporting nodes, and Wen Zhong survives after the Formation Eye is destroyed. The Shang army escapes; West Qi abandons its pursuit after losing the opportunity at the ridge. 63 64 68

Yu Yuan's Capture and Rescue

West Qi captures the Intercepting Sect immortal Yu Yuan but cannot execute him by attacks on his physical body. Lu Ya is summoned with the Immortal-Slaying Gourd, whose flying knife threatens Yu Yuan's Primordial Spirit. Lin Yuan and three companions break Yu Yuan's restraints at a temporary execution platform and escape with him. 79 80 82 84

Shifting Tribulation and Plague Campaign

As Intercepting Sect cultivators survive their expected deaths, tribulation pressure begins shifting toward West Qi's Elucidation Sect allies. Han Dulong becomes a casualty, and his body is brought back to West Qi. His death leaves Xue Ehu grieving and blaming Lin Yuan for changing the course of the calamity, though Chen Yue disputes placing sole responsibility on him. 90 96 100

Lü Yue and his four disciples later bring plague arts to the Shang front. Nearly half of West Qi's frontline troops fall ill overnight, including Qi Practitioners in three camps. The plague also begins reaching ordinary towns behind its lines. Lin Yuan urges Lü Yue to limit civilian harm and helps bring together plague, formation, and soul-arts specialists to devise a more selective attack. West Qi responds with medicines, talismans, and a protective light while the new plague formation undergoes its first test. 104 105 106 107
