History
The Intercepting Sect is regarded on Blue Star as the most dangerous of the three Secret Realm factions. Its reputation for “teaching without distinction,” its vast disciple base, and its former glory are overshadowed by its prophesied defeat in the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. This fate made it a blood-red selection marker for trial entrants and the subject of repeated warnings from teachers such as Chen Qingshan 1.
Lin Yuan chose the sect specifically because its doomed disciples gave his Fate-Reversal Inheritance system targets to save. His first interventions prevented Biyun’s death and diverted Lady Shiji from her fatal confrontation at Qianyuan Mountain. Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s arrival at Chentang Pass forced Taiyi to acknowledge Nezha’s wrongdoing, allowing Shiji to accept compensation rather than pursue the conflict to her death 3 5.
The sect’s involvement in the Shang–Zhou conflict exposed a recurring weakness: disciples were vulnerable when isolated, pursued enemies alone, or answered each casualty with a larger retaliatory force. Lin Yuan helped the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island survive by insisting they remain together, then helped the Ten Heavenly Lords redesign their formations so they could support one another instead of being defeated separately 13 16 20 22.
By the time Zhao Gongming and the Three Cloud Sisters entered the conflict, the sect had developed into a more coordinated force. Its surviving members located and destroyed the altar sustaining Zhao Gongming’s curse, defended the Three Cloud Sisters against Yuanshi’s intervention, and withdrew key disciples from West Qi rather than allowing them to be consumed by repeated battles 35 36 45 47.
Tongtian subsequently made survival-focused cooperation a sect-wide policy. The Four Demon Generals adopted its precautions at Jiameng Pass and later helped Lin Yuan disrupt the Heaven-Reaching Divine Fire Pillars at Dragon-Severing Ridge, where Wen Zhong escaped his destined death. Tongtian observed that the survival of these disciples was stabilizing the sect’s fortune instead of allowing it to decline 50 52 63 69.
At Jiepai Pass, Lin Yuan warned Duobao early enough for him to protect the injured Holy Mother Huo Ling from Guangchengzi’s Heaven-Flipping Seal. Huo Ling survived with her Golden Radiance Crown, interrupting a chain of events that Tongtian said could have drawn Duobao, Guangchengzi, and eventually the Saints into a premature confrontation. Tongtian then directed that information about major tribulations involving core disciples be brought to Lin Yuan before action was taken 75 78 79.
After Yu Yuan’s rescue, the sect introduced a connected Life-Lamp Warning Formation to alert fellow disciples when someone was endangered. Its growing number of survivors left vacancies on the Investiture of the Gods, prompting the calamity to seek candidates outside the sect. Han Dulong became the first Elucidation Sect disciple taken as a replacement candidate; Tongtian rejected suggestions that his disciples should deliberately kill outsiders to fill the remaining places 88 89 95 96 97.
Tongtian later announced that at least 37 Intercepting Sect disciples had escaped high-risk fates and formally named Lin Yuan the sect’s Daoist Heir. The improvement has not ended the calamity: its recruitment has spread to other factions, and the sect’s monitored probability of destruction remains 42% 98 99.
Organization and Culture
Leadership and seat of power
- Tongtian — Saint and sect leader. He protects the sect’s disciples, first recognizes Lin Yuan as a Dao Seed Candidate, later adopts sect-wide survival rules, and ultimately names him Daoist Heir 39 50 99.
- Golden Turtle Island — Major Intercepting Sect territory in the Eastern Sea, containing dense spiritual veins, disciple residences, and the island-protecting grand formation 6.
- Biyou Palace — Tongtian’s hall and the site of high-level deliberations involving core disciples, Zhao Gongming, the Three Cloud Sisters, the Ten Heavenly Lords, and the Four Sages 49 50.
Known members and groups

| Daoist Duobao | Eldest senior brother who oversees sect competitions and rewards promising disciples; Huo Ling’s master, who intervenes to save her at Jiepai Pass 6 10 75 |
| Golden Spirit Holy Mother | Core disciple and head of the Golden Spirit lineage; Lin Yuan’s master and a decisive defender of junior disciples 4 5 |
| Lin Yuan | Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s disciple and the sect’s Daoist Heir. His repeated rescues and strategic reforms have changed the sect’s fortunes; the title does not alter Duobao’s seniority or Lin Yuan’s master-disciple relationship 39 50 99 |
| Wen Zhong | Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s renowned disciple and Great Shang’s Grand Preceptor; recruits sect members to aid Shang and survives Dragon-Severing Ridge 2 11 69 |
| Lady Shiji | Disciple of Tongtian residing at Skeleton Mountain; her survival is the first major change to the sect’s doomed chain of events 2 5 |

| Zhao Gongming | A Daluo Golden Immortal, prominent outer disciple, and wielder of the twenty-four Sea-Calming Pearls 30 |
| Three Cloud Sisters | Yunxiao, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao; creators and controllers of the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation 40 41 |
| Holy Mother Huo Ling | Duobao’s disciple, whose survival at Jiepai Pass prevents a wider chain of sectarian retaliation 75 79 |
| Yu Yuan | One-Qi Immortal of Penglai Island; survives capture by West Qi and a threatened execution involving Lu Ya’s Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife 79 80 88 |
| Four Demon Generals | Mo Liqing, Mo Lihong, Mo Lihai, and Mo Lishou; defenders of Jiameng Pass and allied outer-sect adherents within the sect’s Daoist network, rather than members of Tongtian’s core personal-disciple lineage 50 52 63 |
Sect character
The Intercepting Sect has a comparatively relaxed internal hierarchy. Disciples spar, joke, drink, and form relationships across differences in cultivation, rather than maintaining the stricter distance associated with the Elucidation Sect 10.
Its defining instinct is to protect its own. Golden Spirit Holy Mother defends Biyun’s right to accountability; the Four Sages immediately answer Wen Zhong’s request for help; and Tongtian personally confronts Yuanshi when the Three Cloud Sisters are threatened 5 12 45 46.
This loyalty is also its historical vulnerability. Enemies can exploit a disciple’s death to lure increasingly powerful allies into the same calamity, turning rescue and retaliation into a chain of losses 39 50.
The sect’s newer policy distinguishes protection and decisive self-defense from deliberately hunting other factions’ disciples for the Investiture of the Gods. Tongtian endorses survival, mutual care, and rescue while leaving the list’s remaining candidates to their own karma 97 103.
Formations and Military Methods
Ten Ultimate Linked Formation
The Ten Heavenly Lords originally deployed ten separate formations, each powerful but unable to reinforce the others. Lin Yuan identified this isolation as their critical weakness: an opponent could focus overwhelming force on one formation at a time 20.
The revised system uses nine Supreme Clarity Formation Talismans to transfer power between formations. A threatened formation can borrow support from the other nine, exchange elemental effects, shift controlling positions, and move key formation eyes to evade attacks 22 23 26.
- Initial transfers were reliably maintained at roughly ten percent of each supporting formation’s power; higher transfers risked destabilizing the network 22.
- The linked formation allowed the Ten Heavenly Lords to survive a coordinated assault by the Twelve Golden Immortals, even though it could not defeat them outright 27.
- Continued attacks produced further refinements, including moving formation cores, redirected attack routes, and concentrated mana channels 26.
- After Huo Ling’s survival delayed wider sectarian conflict, the Ten Heavenly Lords gained additional time to perfect the linked formation 79.
Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation
The Three Cloud Sisters’ formation surpasses the linked Ten Ultimate Formation by functioning as a complete, self-contained world rather than a network of separate structures. It distorts space and direction, erodes immortal energy, and threatens the Three Flowers and Five Qi that support a cultivator’s foundation 41.
When all Twelve Golden Immortals entered together, Lin Yuan supported the formation externally by detecting weaknesses and repairing its foundations with Formation-Stabilizing Talismans. The formation ultimately stripped much of the Twelve Golden Immortals’ cultivation without killing them 42 43.
Life-Lamp Warning Formation
The sect’s connected Life-Lamp Warning Formation detects when participating disciples are in danger and alerts allies who can intervene. Earlier Life Lamps had been kept separately; Tongtian plans to extend the linked system to more disciples. By the time its effectiveness is discussed at Golden Turtle Island, nearby allies have already responded to two incidents 87 89.
The system addresses the danger posed by the sect’s scattered membership: a threatened disciple need no longer depend on news reaching Golden Turtle Island after a fight is over 89 90.
Strategic Reforms
Tongtian formally adopted Lin Yuan’s survival-focused doctrine as sect rules for all matters involving the calamity 50.
| Rule | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Do not enter danger alone without cause | If multiple disciples can respond, they should travel together rather than allow enemies to isolate them 50 |
| Maintain a retreat option in major battles | Withdrawal is treated as practical preservation, not disgrace 50 |
| Save fellow disciples before preserving pride | Reinforcements should be called and overwhelming force used when necessary 50 |
The announcement caused a subtle ripple in the Intercepting Sect’s fortune, suggesting that collective conduct can influence the sect’s broader fate 50.
Disciples began putting the rules into practice: the Ten Heavenly Lords agreed to travel in groups of at least three and to gather all ten when confronting Elucidation Sect core disciples, while the Four Sages also rejected solitary travel. The Four Demon Generals refrained from pursuing West Qi beyond Jiameng Pass and were urged to remain within mutual support range 51 52.
Tongtian expanded the reforms from battlefield conduct to advance warning. Major matters involving core disciples’ tribulations are to be reported to Lin Yuan so he can assess hidden dangers before the sect acts; the Life-Lamp network provides a way to summon help when danger is already unfolding 78 79 87 90.
Following Han Dulong’s entry onto the Investiture of the Gods, Tongtian reaffirmed that disciples should maintain these precautions but must not kill members of other factions merely to fill the list. They may defend themselves when attacked 97.
External Relations
- Elucidation Sect — Primary sectarian rival during the Shang–Zhou conflict. Its Twelve Golden Immortals repeatedly oppose Intercepting Sect forces, while Taiyi and Yuanshi intervene to protect their side’s interests 24 30 46. As vacant divine positions seek replacement candidates, Han Dulong and then Xue Ehu become Elucidation Sect disciples entered on the Investiture of the Gods 95 96 103.
- Great Shang — Wen Zhong recruits Intercepting Sect cultivators to defend Shang against West Qi and the Elucidation Sect’s immortal intervention. Tongtian later orders that mortal methods be used first in mortal warfare 11 47.
- West Qi — Main battlefield opponent. Its forces repeatedly attempt to separate, ambush, curse, or overwhelm Intercepting Sect disciples 13 16 35.
- Heavenly Court and the Investiture of the Gods — Haotian monitors the vacant divine positions left by surviving sect disciples. As the list seeks replacements, its tribulation threads extend toward other sects and independent cultivators; Tongtian warns that escaping an appointed death redirects rather than ends the calamity 88 89 90 98.
- Western Sect and unaffiliated cultivators — Both come within the widening pool of possible tribulation candidates as vacancies on the Investiture of the Gods grow 89 98 99.
- Blue Star trial entrants — The sect remains one of the three selectable Secret Realm factions. Lin Yuan’s actions have challenged its former reputation as an unavoidable death sentence, and monitoring authorities have abandoned the original fixed-candidate model 1 49 98.
