Background
Lin Yuan is a transmigrator from Blue Star and a former corporate worker. At Jiangcheng No. 1 Transcendent High School, he initially intends to select the comparatively practical Elucidation Sect for the Primordial Investiture of the Gods Secret Realm. His decision changes when the Fate-Reversal Inheritance activates: saving someone destined to die allows him to permanently inherit that person’s strongest ability. He consequently chooses the supposedly doomed Intercepting Sect, viewing its many future casualties as opportunities to overturn fate rather than as a death sentence 1.
He awakens in the Primordial World as a late Earth Immortal registered disciple of Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s lineage. His initial standing is exceptionally low: he owns only an ordinary cave abode, wears a plain green Daoist robe, and relies on a refined iron dharma sword that is not even a postnatal spiritual treasure 2.
Lin Yuan’s first interventions save Biyun from Nezha’s Heaven-Shaking Arrow and prevent Lady Shiji from pursuing the conflict to Qianyuan Mountain. The latter event earns him the Blackstone Dao Body, the Thick Earth Sword, and Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s attention 3 5.
Appearance
Lin Yuan initially appears as an unremarkable Intercepting Sect disciple, dressed in an ordinary green Daoist robe and carrying a refined iron dharma sword at his waist 2.
- Originally resides in a plain cave dwelling on an ordinary spiritual island at the edge of the Eastern Sea 2.
- Later carries the heavy, earth-aligned Thick Earth Sword and the sharper Qingxuan Sword 5 10.
- Develops an increasingly formidable aura as his cultivation advances from Earth Immortal to Primordial Unity Golden Immortal 6 49.
- Still wears a simple green robe when he arrives at the younger disciples’ duels as a Mid-Stage Primordial Unity Golden Immortal 92.
Personality
Lin Yuan is pragmatic, observant, and openly afraid of dying. He does not consider caution cowardice; when faced with enemies beyond his ability, he prefers to seek backing, retreat, or alter the battlefield rather than force an unwinnable confrontation 2 45.
Despite beginning with an opportunistic interest in Fate-Reversal rewards, he develops genuine loyalty toward the Intercepting Sect. He repeatedly risks injury to protect fellow disciples, reasoning that refusing to help others when able would leave him with no right to expect their aid in the future 11 16.
He is also witty and provocative in battle. Lin Yuan taunts opponents into revealing stronger techniques, admits when he is using them for training, and is willing to mock enemies even while remaining safely out of their reach 7 9 37.
Lin Yuan refuses to celebrate an opponent’s death merely because it benefits his sect. After Han Dulong enters the Investiture of the Gods, he rejects the idea of hunting Elucidation Sect disciples to fill its vacant positions. He distinguishes fair combat from attempted murder, however, and holds that a killing move warrants decisive self-defense 96 97 101 104.
Abilities & Skills
Fate-Reversal Inheritance
A system ability that identifies people fated to die during the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. Successfully altering a target’s death trajectory grants Lin Yuan that target’s strongest ability or talent.
- First activates when he chooses the Intercepting Sect 1.
- Rewards are permanent inheritances rather than temporary enhancements 3 5.
- Its targets include Biyun, Shiji, the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island, the Ten Heavenly Lords, Zhao Gongming, the Three Cloud Sisters, and the Four Demon Generals 3 16 28 38 48 57.
- Later reversals include Wen Zhong, Holy Mother Huo Ling, and Yu Yuan; Yu Yuan’s survival grants Lin Yuan the Indestructible Immortal Body 69 79 84.
- The cumulative reversals alter the Intercepting Sect’s predicted destruction probability from 100% to 63% 49. By Chapter 99, at least thirty-seven high-risk sect members have escaped their original fates, and the predicted destruction probability has fallen to 42% 99.
- Prevented deaths do not erase the wider calamity. Vacant Investiture positions begin drawing candidates from other factions, and the system does not warn Lin Yuan when Han Dulong’s tribulation aura surges 89 95 99.
Innate Spiritual Perception
Inherited from Biyun after preventing his death.
- Detects spiritual-energy flow, distant sounds, hidden movements, killing intent, and flaws in techniques 3.
- Allows Lin Yuan to distinguish real attacks from feints and identify attacks that carry actual killing power 7 15.
- Tracks escape techniques through disturbances in wind, mist, and residual mana 8.
- Warns him of hidden formations, ambushes, and looming death tribulations 16 34.
Blackstone Dao Body
Inherited from Shiji after averting her death beneath the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Canopy.
- Raises his innate foundation from ordinary postnatal to high-grade postnatal 5.
- Purifies his body and mana, accelerates recovery, and improves his connection to earth veins 5 6.
- Lets him endure attacks from cultivators above his realm, though sufficiently powerful opponents can still injure him 7 9.
- Enhances control of Thick Earth energy and earth-aligned sword techniques 6 8.
Physical Resilience
- Vajra Immortal Bone — Strengthens his bones and supports his physical foundation alongside the Blackstone Dao Body 19 49.
- Indestructible Immortal Body — Inherited after Yu Yuan escapes execution. It reinforces Lin Yuan’s flesh, bones, meridians, and organs, compounding his existing physical talents 84.
- His strengthened body lets him withstand a restrained exchange of punches with Yu Yuan, though Yu Yuan retains the advantage. Lin Yuan continues to regard durability as a survival measure, not a reason to invite attacks 84.
Combat Insight and Instinct
Lin Yuan accumulates several complementary combat talents through Fate Reversal.
- Supreme Clarity Battle Intent — Inherited from Wang Mo; improves timing, mana efficiency, counterattacks, and the ability to turn sensed danger into an immediate response 16 17.
- Daluo Combat Insight — Inherited from Zhao Gongming; grants high-level judgment on treasure use, pursuit, feints, resource expenditure, and the integration of his existing abilities 38.
- Primal Battle Intuition — Inherited from Bixiao; provides instinctive judgment of danger, feints, openings, and moments suitable for decisive counterattacks 48.
- Cooperative Combat Spiritual Perception — Inherited after saving Mo Lishou; reveals how allies’ positions and abilities can be combined most effectively in battle 57 58.
- Battlefield Killing Intent Perception — Helps him read attacks and battlefield danger alongside his other senses, including while fighting a formation guardian at Dragon-Severing Ridge 63.
- By his seclusion after the duel with Chen Yue, observation, movement, sword attacks, soul resonance, physical defense, and formation analysis are becoming parts of an instinctive fighting style rather than separate techniques 94 99.
Movement and Mobility
- Wind-Thunder Escape — Inherited from Yang Sen; enables rapid lightning-assisted movement and short-distance bursts of displacement 17.
- Nine-Heavens Qi Mastery — Inherited from Qiongxiao; allows him to ride natural wind and qi currents, greatly reducing Wind-Thunder Escape’s mana consumption and noise 48.
- Mystic Thunder Eyes — Allows him to examine residual magical-power traces, including sword scars, treasure vortices, sound-wave disturbances, and suspicious observers on a battlefield 52. After Wen Zhong survives Dragon-Severing Ridge, Lin Yuan receives their origin, improving his ability to see useful flows of spiritual energy during travel 69.
- Uses the Mystic Thunder Eyes to read opponents’ mana circulation, treasure suppression zones, and developing talisman attacks during combat 93.
Formation Dao
Lin Yuan develops from an outsider who recognizes a formation’s strategic vulnerability into the primary designer and commander of the Ten Ultimate Linked Formation.
- Heaven-Severing Formation Insight — Inherited from Qin Wan after saving him; exposes inefficient power routes and structural weaknesses in formations 24.
- Uses linked talismans to let nine formations reinforce a tenth, preventing enemies from defeating the Ten Ultimate Formation one formation at a time 22.
- Adds side channels, energy-conversion patterns, position-shifting functions, and mobile formation eyes to counter enemy formation-breaking methods 25 26.
- Creates cross-formation transfers that allow formation masters to escape through allied formations when their own positions collapse 28.
- Innate Formation Core — Inherited from Yunxiao; organizes his accumulated formation knowledge into a unified framework and allows him to perceive formations as systems involving terrain, qi, weather, mana, and movement 48.
- At Dragon-Severing Ridge, identifies and destroys an earth-vein transfer disk feeding the Heaven-Reaching Divine Fire Pillars. He subsequently detects a false main fire vein and deduces that three hidden locks protect the formation’s true source 63 64 65.
- Proposes the Intercepting Sect’s Life-Lamp Warning Formation, which records disciples’ whereabouts and alerts the sect to injuries so help can be dispatched quickly 87 89.
Swordsmanship and Treasure Control
- Refines the Basic Shangqing Sword Formula into a force-delivery method suited to the Blackstone Dao Body 7.
- Develops the Thick Earth Sword Technique from a heavy, defensive style into a more precise and flexible sword art through battle with Chen Xuanfeng 9.
- Treasure-Mastering Telepathy — Inherited from Mo Lihong; makes the Qingxuan Sword and Thick Earth Sword function as extensions of his body and improves his ability to coordinate multiple treasures 56.
- Four Symbols Sword Intent — Inherited from Mo Liqing; incorporates the principles of earth, water, fire, and wind into his swordsmanship 57.
- Innate Fire Spirit — Lets him channel red-gold flames through his swords and combine fire with his other sword intents 93 99.
Soul and Resonance Attacks
- Celestial Sound Soul-Shaking — Inherited from Mo Lihai; attacks a target’s Primordial Spirit through sound, vibration, sword resonance, formations, or other resonant objects 55.
- Can channel the ability through the Qingxuan Sword to disrupt an enemy’s Primordial Spirit and interrupt lethal attacks 57.
- Hides soul-shaking resonance in sword hums during his duels, disrupting a talisman cultivator and a pagoda wielder without relying on a direct soul attack alone 93 99.
Equipment
- Thick Earth Sword — Low-grade postnatal spirit treasure gifted by Shiji after Lin Yuan’s original sword is destroyed saving Biyun; especially compatible with his Blackstone Dao Body 5 6.
- Qingxuan Sword — High-grade postnatal spirit treasure bestowed by Tongtian; provides the killing power that the Thick Earth Sword lacks 10.
- Supreme Clarity Immortal Scripture — Cultivation scripture personally transmitted by Tongtian 10.
- Supreme Purity Guardian Sword Token — Saint-level protective token given by Tongtian; Lin Yuan destroys it to summon Tongtian when Yuanshi threatens the Three Cloud Sisters 39 45.
- Sea-Calming Pearl — One of Zhao Gongming’s twenty-four pearls, temporarily lent to Lin Yuan for study after Zhao Gongming’s death calamity is resolved 38.
- Treasure-Dropping Coin — Borrowed from Zhao Gongming for Yu Yuan’s rescue; disrupts the Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife’s lock on a target’s Primordial Spirit, though it does not directly seize the gourd 79 83.
- Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s Communication Token — Given to him before his duel with Xue Ehu so he can contact his teacher directly if necessary 100.
Relationships
- Golden Spirit Holy Mother / Jin Ling — Teacher and protector. She answers Lin Yuan’s call during the Shiji incident, promotes him to elite disciple, and supports his advancement into sect leadership 5 10 49. She later defends him after Xue Ehu’s attack and obtains a pill to heal his Primordial Spirit 102.
- Biyun — First person Lin Yuan saves through Fate Reversal; Biyun’s survival grants him Innate Spiritual Perception 3.
- Lady Shiji — Fellow disciple whose rescue grants Lin Yuan the Blackstone Dao Body; she gifts him the Thick Earth Sword and cultivation resources 5 6.
- Tongtian — Sect patriarch and benefactor. Tongtian gives Lin Yuan the Qingxuan Sword, Supreme Clarity Immortal Scripture, protective sword token, and candidate Dao Child status 10 39. He later appoints him Daoist Heir and adopts his distinction between fair combat and self-defense against killing moves as a sect rule 99 104.
- Wen Zhong — Senior brother, battlefield commander, and frequent companion. Their relationship develops from Wen Zhong’s skepticism over Lin Yuan’s low cultivation into mutual respect 10 11 38. Lin Yuan helps him survive the trap at Dragon-Severing Ridge rather than leaving him to cover the army’s retreat alone 60 64 69.
- Wang Mo, Yang Sen, Gao Yougan, and Li Xingba — The Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island. After Lin Yuan repeatedly prevents their deaths, they recognize him as their younger brother and pledge collective protection 16 19.
- Qin Wan and the Ten Heavenly Lords — Formation collaborators and allies. Lin Yuan saves all ten from their original deaths and becomes a central designer of the Ten Ultimate Linked Formation 20 28 29.
- Zhao Gongming — Senior martial uncle who becomes a trusted supporter. Lin Yuan detects and helps dismantle the Nail-Head Seven-Arrows curse that would have killed him 35 38. Zhao Gongming later lends him the Treasure-Dropping Coin and endorses his appointment as Daoist Heir 79 99.
- Yunxiao, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao — The Three Cloud Sisters. Lin Yuan helps avert all three sisters’ deaths and gains access to study the Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation 45 48.
- Nezha — Rival from the Elucidation Sect. Their conflict originates with Nezha’s Heaven-Shaking Arrow nearly killing Biyun; Lin Yuan later uses their duel to study Nezha’s spear techniques 3 15.
- Mo Liqing, Mo Lihong, Mo Lihai, and Mo Lishou — The Four Demon Generals. Lin Yuan identifies their death tribulations and helps transform them from isolated targets into a coordinated unit 55 56 57. They subsequently help him dismantle the Dragon-Severing Ridge formation 63 64.
- Holy Mother Huo Ling — Fellow disciple whose survival Lin Yuan helps secure against Guangchengzi and the Heaven-Flipping Seal. Her survival delays a chain of conflict that could have drawn both sects into an early Saint-level confrontation 72 79.
- Yu Yuan — Body cultivator whom Lin Yuan rescues from Lu Ya’s Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife. Yu Yuan protects him during their escape and later tests Lin Yuan’s newly inherited physical resilience 83 84.
- Chen Yue — Blue Star classmate and Elucidation Sect genius. Lin Yuan’s rise to first place makes Chen Yue recognize him as a serious rival 19 29. After meeting in the Primordial World, Chen Yue warns him about Lu Ya; Lin Yuan later defeats him in a respectful duel, and Chen Yue acknowledges that their classmates were wrong to dismiss Lin Yuan’s choice 80 94.
- Xue Ehu — Elucidation Sect disciple who blames Lin Yuan after Han Dulong’s death. Lin Yuan holds back in their public duel, but kills Xue when he attacks from behind with a Jade Clarity Sword Talisman and continues trying to kill him 100 101 102.
- Lü Yue — Intercepting Sect plague cultivator whom Lin Yuan warns that allowing his miasma to sicken civilians is intensifying his karmic danger. Lü Yue agrees to test a more selective military use of the plague 104 105.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Choosing the Intercepting Sect
Lin Yuan rejects school warnings and joins the Intercepting Sect after recognizing that its doomed disciples are ideal targets for his Fate-Reversal Inheritance 1.
Chentang Pass Incident
He saves Biyun from the Heaven-Shaking Arrow, warns Shiji away from Qianyuan Mountain, and summons Golden Spirit Holy Mother rather than confronting Taiyi Zhenren alone. Shiji’s survival produces Lin Yuan’s first major improvement to his foundation 3 5.
Golden Turtle Island Tournament
Lin Yuan enters the sect tournament as an Earth Immortal Peak and defeats opponents above his realm through defense, perception, terrain control, and adaptive swordsmanship. He breaks through to Heavenly Immortal during his battle with Chen Xuanfeng, finishes in the top three, and earns Tongtian’s recognition 7 8 9 10.
Saving the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island
Accompanying Wen Zhong to Great Shang, Lin Yuan recognizes the Four Sages as impending Fate-Reversal targets. He repeatedly disrupts West Qi’s attempts to isolate them, takes a Lock-Meridian Nail for Li Xingba, and helps the group develop the discipline to fight and retreat together 12 16 17.
Ten Ultimate Linked Formation
Lin Yuan identifies the Ten Heavenly Lords’ isolated formations as their greatest weakness. He helps convert the Ten Ultimate Formation into a linked system, continually upgrades it under enemy pressure, and ultimately commands the defense that saves all ten formation masters 20 22 25 28.
Zhao Gongming’s Death Calamity
Lin Yuan recognizes the symptoms of Lu Ya’s Nail-Head Seven-Arrows curse, uses the Ten Ultimate Linked Formation to locate the hidden altar, and prioritizes breaking the curse over pursuing Lu Ya. Zhao Gongming’s death calamity is fully overturned, earning Lin Yuan Daluo Combat Insight 35 36 37 38.
Three Cloud Sisters and Saint Intervention
When Yuanshi personally threatens Yunxiao, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao, Lin Yuan refuses to gamble with their lives. He destroys Tongtian’s sword token to summon his master, preventing the sisters’ immediate deaths and later receiving all three of their core talents 45 48.
Rewriting the Intercepting Sect’s Fate
Lin Yuan’s accumulated reversals reshape the sect’s policies. Tongtian adopts group-travel rules, emphasizes survival over reckless retaliation, and involves Lin Yuan in high-level strategic discussions as the sect’s destruction probability begins to fall 47 49 51. Lin Yuan also proposes a Life-Lamp Warning Formation to help the sect locate and rescue endangered disciples. He later warns against deliberately killing members of other factions merely to fill the Investiture’s vacant positions 87 89 97.
Four Demon Generals Arc
At Jiameng Pass, Lin Yuan identifies the Four Demon Generals as another group targeted for sequential elimination. He helps Mo Lihai, Mo Lihong, Mo Lishou, and Mo Liqing survive coordinated traps, inheriting their soul-attack, treasure-control, battlefield-coordination, and sword-intent abilities 55 56 57.
Dragon-Severing Ridge
Recognizing Dragon-Severing Ridge as the site of Wen Zhong’s likely death, Lin Yuan joins him rather than allowing him to hold the retreat alone. With the Four Demon Generals’ help, he destroys a disk supplying the Heaven-Reaching Divine Fire Pillars, then investigates the formation’s concealed locks and confronts its architect, Yun Zhongzi. Wen Zhong survives the death tribulation, and Lin Yuan receives the origin of the Mystic Thunder Eyes 60 63 64 65 66 69.
Huo Ling and Yu Yuan’s Rescues
Lin Yuan studies the tracking delay of Guangchengzi’s Heaven-Flipping Seal and directs Holy Mother Huo Ling out of its path. Tongtian later explains that her survival has prevented a premature escalation between the two sects 72 79. When Yu Yuan faces execution, Lin Yuan borrows Zhao Gongming’s Treasure-Dropping Coin to disrupt Lu Ya’s Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife. Yu Yuan escapes and, after returning to protect Lin Yuan during the breakout, becomes the source of Lin Yuan’s Indestructible Immortal Body 79 83 84.
Younger-Generation Duels and Changing Tribulation
The Elucidation Sect arranges public younger-generation duels to challenge Lin Yuan’s growing reputation. He defeats three Golden Immortal Peak disciples at once, then wins a respectful duel against his former class monitor Chen Yue 91 93 94. Soon afterward, Han Dulong’s true spirit enters the Investiture of the Gods. Lin Yuan recognizes that saving his own sect’s disciples has redirected, rather than eliminated, the wider calamity; he refuses to seek deaths among non-enemies as a matter of policy 95 96 97.
Appointment as Daoist Heir
Following seven days of seclusion, Lin Yuan reaches Peak Primordial Unity Golden Immortal. With the support of the disciples he has saved, Tongtian formally removes “Candidate” from his title and appoints him Daoist Heir while preserving Jin Ling’s position as his teacher and the sect’s existing seniority order. Blue Star’s monitoring system records a 41.6% historical deviation rate and a 42% probability of the Intercepting Sect’s destruction 99.
Xue Ehu’s Challenge and Lü Yue’s Plague
Xue Ehu challenges Lin Yuan after blaming him for Han Dulong’s death. Lin Yuan treats the encounter as a spar until Xue attacks him from behind with a sword talisman; Lin Yuan kills him in self-defense and recovers from a Primordial Spirit injury. Tongtian subsequently rules that disciples should honor fair-combat limits but may retaliate when an opponent uses killing moves 100 101 102 104. Lin Yuan then travels to Wen Zhong’s front to inspect Lü Yue’s plague formation. He warns that miasma spreading into civilian towns is worsening Lü Yue’s karma and persuades him to test a more selective approach against military targets 104 105.
