Power Progression

Background

A Martial Soul is the foundation of a soul master’s power. It may be useless or powerful, but awakening it is essential for cultivation; many commoners never receive access to an Awakening Stone and consequently live as people regarded as having no Martial Soul. 2

Martial Souls also function as proof of lineage. In the Sun Moon Empire, the Sun Martial Soul is recognized as the inherited Martial Soul of the direct imperial line, making its manifestation stronger evidence of ancestry than appearance or personal testimony. 13

Ye Chenxing initially could not awaken a Martial Soul because he had physically crossed into the Douluo plane from another world. After the Fantasy Tree absorbed the Golden Tree’s life force, established a Lostbelt, and altered local rules, it changed his body to permit awakening and generated the native Hall of Heroes. 3

Before his awakening, Xuan Zi, Bei Bei, and Shrek Academy mistake Ye’s dragon-like aura for the Dark Sacred Dragon Martial Soul, the Martial Soul formerly borne by Dragon Emperor Douluo Long Xiaoyao. Ye explicitly denies possessing that Martial Soul and states that he had no Martial Soul at the time. 1 2

Types and Manifestations

Hall of Heroes

Heroic Spirit Summoning

The Hall of Heroes summons Heroic Spirits through a ritual governed by the Martial Soul’s rules. Its first summoning brings forth Saber, a Six-Winged Angel-associated warrior who recognizes Ye Chenxing as her Master. 3

• A Heroic Spirit can be summoned when Ye reaches a cultivation bottleneck. 7
• The summoned individual is influenced by the catalyst used and the soul ring obtained at that breakthrough. 7
• Ye specifically considers soul-ring compatibility important because it can improve both the relevance and strength of a future Heroic Spirit summon. 11 22
• Saber’s manifestation is powerful enough that Di Tian initially mistakes her for an independently acting Limit Douluo-level expert. 6
• Ye’s second Heroic Spirit, Archer, is a conceptual Heroic Spirit representing the origin and collective concept of Soul Tool engineering rather than a conventional combat-focused individual. 39 41
• Archer possesses no Soul Power or conventional Martial Soul abilities, but can reproduce launching Soul Tools from his era and provide designs for Soul Tools that Ye can conceptualize. 41
• Ye later adds Su Yuntao, Old Jack, and Ye Lingling to his summoned roster, prioritizing their strategic Noble Phantasms over direct combat power. 98

Inherited Heroic Spirit Abilities

The Hall of Heroes allows Ye to use the abilities of a summoned Heroic Spirit as his own while retaining the soul skills granted by his rings. 7

• Saber grants techniques including Angel Assault, Angel Roar, Angel Judgment, Angel True Form, Angel Sacred Fire, Angel Domain, and Angel Blessing. 7
• Deprivation of Fate removes a target’s defenses at the level of fate, allowing subsequent attacks to inflict true damage. 7
• Ye uses Angel Assault, Deprivation of Fate, and the Dark Gold Dreadclaw Bear left palm bone together to break the Silvermoon Wolf King’s layered elemental defenses. 29
• Archer’s contract grants Ye the passive Soul Guidance Appraisal Eye, through which he can perceive a Soul Tool’s internal formations, materials, construction methods, and flaws. 41
• Archer’s knowledge allows Ye to understand the manufacturing method of any launching Soul Tool he can conceptualize, though his Soul Power presently limits both the quantity and quality of projected or created devices. 41
• Archer cannot create non-launching Soul Tools, such as Milk Bottles and close-combat Soul Guidance blades, and cannot provide knowledge beyond Ye’s own conceptual understanding. 41
• Su Yuntao’s Noble Phantasm, Running-Water Martial Soul Awakening, Iron-Clad Blind Douluo, gives targets whom he judges to possess “trash Martial Souls” a one-percent chance to receive Innate Full Soul Power; a smaller probability can produce Martial Soul mutation or Twin Martial Souls. 98
• Old Jack’s Noble Phantasm, Aged Old Jack, creates one hundred-year Soul Ring per day despite Old Jack possessing no Soul Power. 98

Heroic Spirit Fusion

Ye can merge directly with a summoned Heroic Spirit. This resembles a Martial Soul Fusion Skill to outside observers but is an inherent Hall of Heroes ability rather than a conventional fusion between two soul masters. 35

• Fusion with Qian Renxue matures Ye’s appearance, grants him her divine aura, and produces twelve radiant wings. 35
• Within the Angel Domain, the fused form suppresses and drains evil soul power. 35
• Angel Judgment nearly destroys Zhongli Ren’s Ghostshadow Leopard Emperor beast soul and later becomes the decisive attack against him. 35 36
• Ye and Qian Renxue later assume the Twelve-Winged Angel form again against Zhongli Tian and Zhongli Di, its holy aura suppressing their blood-colored beast souls. 59
• In the fused state, Ye combines angelic techniques, Mental Connection, and holy-enhanced Soul Tools; however, the form’s immense Soul Power consumption prevents him from sustaining high-level combat for long. 60
• The Angel Sacred Sword can serve as the basis for a Heroic Spirit’s Noble Phantasm, an ultimate manifestation of its legend. Ye prepares to release such a Noble Phantasm against Mask Douluo. 60

Soul Rings and Soul Skills

Soul rings supply abilities and can strengthen a soul master’s foundation. Ye argues that the most valuable rings should enhance enduring fundamentals—such as physical strength, speed, defense, soul power, and spiritual power—rather than duplicate attacks a Martial Soul can already perform. 27

• Ye cites Blue Silver Grass Entanglement as an inefficient example, arguing that a Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul should be able to entangle targets without requiring a ring slot for the basic action. 27
• His first ring provides major soul-power and physical enhancements in addition to Hall of Heroes abilities. 7 27
• His second ring prioritizes spiritual power rather than one side of his public dual-element balance. 23 31
• Mental Connection can forcibly link Ye with targets whose spiritual power is below his own, enabling detection, interference, weakening, simulation, sharing, brief control, and memory-reading effects. 31

• The Evil Eye-derived second ring provides no additional physical enhancement, but elevates Ye’s spiritual power from the advanced Soul Emperor level to the threshold of the Soul Saint level. 32
• Twin Unity gives Ye the possibility of fusing the Evil Emperor’s Soul Ring into his second ring if he kills the Evil Emperor. 32
• When Ye personally kills an Evil Soul Master with angelic power, the purified residual evil Soul Power can be absorbed by his first ring as supplementary growth. Zhongli Ren’s energy is stored in this manner. 36
• Myriad Demon King’s six-hundred-thousand-year sacrifice grants Ye a red wood-attributed third Soul Ring and raises his Soul Power directly to Level 40. 78
• The associated left leg bone grants Mayfly Technique, which permits high-speed movement through the earth and plant networks, and Wood Shaping, which creates and controls durable wooden constructs capable of absorbing an opponent’s Soul Power. 78

Artificial Soul Rings and Awakening Research

Star Tower treats Martial Soul awakening and Soul Ring access as technological and social problems rather than privileges reserved for established soul-master institutions.

• Ye intends to develop Soul Tools that can assist ordinary people without Soul Power, awaken Martial Souls, and potentially generate artificial Soul Rings. 49
• Old Jack’s ability to create a one-hundred-year Soul Ring every day is considered crucial to Star Tower’s artificial Soul Ring research and its long-term ambition to become a more accessible alternative to the Spirit Pagoda. 98
• Su Yuntao’s awakening-related Noble Phantasm gives Star Tower a possible means of cultivating exceptional talent among people otherwise judged to possess poor Martial Souls. 98

Public Identity and Concealment

Ye publicly presents his Martial Soul as a mutated Dual-Ultimate Sun Martial Soul. This identity secures him recognition as a direct Sun Moon imperial descendant and earns him protection from the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy and Illustrious Virtue Hall. 13 14 17

The Sun manifestation is a disguise produced by extracting Ultimate Fire and Ultimate Light from the Six-Winged Angel within his first ring and using Qian Renxue’s Angel Skull ability to imitate the imperial Martial Soul. 14 22

When pursued by Zhongli Ren, Ye abandons the disguise and manifests a Six-Winged Angel form. Zhongli Ren immediately recognizes that Ye is not truly a Sun Martial Soul wielder and regards the angelic power as a grave threat to evil soul masters. 34

Ye later reveals the Six-Winged Angel manifestation to the Zhongli Brothers as well, confirming to the Holy Spirit Cult that the sacred power they fear has reappeared. 58

Martial Soul Theory

Ye Chenxing considers Martial Souls the primary means of attack, with soul skills serving mainly to reinforce a wielder’s body and compensate for weaknesses. 27

• A low-level attack skill may become negligible at high cultivation, while a permanent enhancement can remain decisive throughout a soul master’s development. 27
• He praises the White Tiger Duke lineage’s balanced configuration of enhancement, burst, ranged, and area skills as a comparatively ideal soul-ring arrangement. 27
• For soul engineers, he argues that Soul Guide Devices can supply much of their offensive power, allowing soul-ring choices to focus on reinforcement, defense, survival, and abilities technology cannot easily replace. 27
• Jing Hongchen considers Ye’s understanding of Martial Soul theory comparable in potential to that of the theorist who laid the foundation for the modern cultivation system. 28
