Background / History

Kira first encounters his childhood friend Athrun Zala amid the Heliopolis conflict. The reunion leaves both stunned, as they have ended up on opposing sides of the war. Kira subsequently becomes the Strike Gundam’s pilot and remains aboard the Archangel, where his identity as a Coordinator subjects him to suspicion despite his value to the crew. He intervenes when Noer Cassia is treated as a presumed spy, recognizing Noer’s similar isolation among Naturals. 40 45

His early service on the Archangel is marked by self-doubt. Kira believes he is being forced to fight because he is a Coordinator, while still being distrusted for that same identity. He questions whether his reluctance to fight Athrun seriously contributed to deaths he could have prevented. 74

Kira nevertheless chooses to protect the Archangel’s crew. He helps Lacus Clyne escape the ship with assistance from Toll, Sai, and Miliaria, then returns to the Strike when the Archangel is threatened. 75 87 His experiences steadily harden his resolve, but also burden him with guilt—particularly when an instinctive counterattack nearly kills Nicol. 120

By the time of the Orb campaign, Kira’s piloting has advanced dramatically. He can outmaneuver and disarm opponents with the Strike, but grief over Toll’s death later drives him into a brutal, uncontrolled battle with Athrun. 107 124

At Orb, Kira rejects factional allegiance and declares that he will continue fighting despite the blood already on his hands. He supports Orb’s neutrality because siding with either major power would only widen the war. 179

Appearance

Kira is a lean, brown-haired young man with purple eyes. He has refined, delicate features that retain a youthful quality, and is described as resembling someone of East Asian descent. 40

  • Brown hair 40
  • Purple eyes 40
  • Lean build 40
  • Refined, youthful facial features 40

Personality

Kira is fundamentally protective and compassionate. His earliest reason for fighting is to safeguard the people around him, even when doing so means opposing Athrun or placing himself in danger. He refuses to let Flay take his place in the Strike Gundam and repeatedly returns to battle when the Archangel is threatened. 77 83 87

He is highly sensitive to the cost of violence. Kira is disturbed when he nearly kills Nicol by instinct, understands that enemy soldiers such as Noer have also been bound by war, and is horrified by civilians killing captured rebels after he defeats them. 120 179 508

His empathy does not prevent him from struggling with anger. Toll’s death causes him to fight Athrun with unconstrained hatred, while grief later drives him to fight with killing intent against multiple opponents. 124 529

Over time, Kira becomes more politically mature. He recognizes that peace cannot be achieved by simplistic intervention, understands the complexity of war and neutrality, and ultimately adopts justice and peace—not merely protecting an individual—as his reason for fighting. 358 536 634
