Xiao Ying lived in the real world as a player of Forging the Sacred Court. He was a longtime friend of Xie Qing, but hid the collapse of his registered marriage to Yun Feng from his social circle. His divorce left him guarded, reluctant to discuss his private life, and wary of romantic attachment 115.

Within the game, Xiao Ying operated as Jian Shang. After the system update established that the game could affect reality, he resolved to pursue strength, wealth, and influence; even his God of Wealth ability functioned outside the game 121.
