Appearance
Orcs are generally depicted as rough-faced, savage-looking humanoids. Their appearance, equipment, and physical quality vary drastically between wandering bands, organized Mordor forces, and elite breeds. 9 159 162
- Early wandering half-orcs are poorly equipped, with incomplete armor or none at all; those encountered at Windcloud Peak average roughly 16–17 HP. 9
- Many Orcs wear crude or ragged gear, though Mordor Orcs use sturdy black armor and better weapons. 159 228
- Moria Orcs are darker and described as more violent than those of the Misty Mountains. 91
- Elite leaders and unusual Orcs can be far tougher than ordinary troops; one early chieftain possesses 40 HP and armor. 14
- Some forces use poisoned weapons, black spiked armor, cleavers, bows, and crossbows. 137
Traits and Combat
Aggression and scavenging
Orcs are consistently violent, bloodthirsty, and attracted to fresh meat. Raiding parties openly discuss killing and eating humans, while Wargs and Orcs commonly target isolated or weaker-looking prey. 9 11 159
- They are effective at swarming enemies, attacking from behind, and using ambushes. 9 22
- A lone Orc usually signals a nearby group; they rarely operate alone. 19
- Their forces commonly field Warg cavalry, archers, infantry, siege crews, Trolls, Olog-hai, and giant beasts. 12 86 249
- Orcs can be driven into disorder when their leader is killed. 23 93 186
Weaknesses
Most ordinary Orcs are individually weak, poorly disciplined, and prone to panic, infighting, and impulsive behavior. 9 12 320
- Sunlight weakens Orcs; this effect disappears after nightfall. 62
- They often underestimate fortified positions and fail to conduct sufficient reconnaissance. 12 13
- Their morale is heavily dependent on strong leadership. Azog's presence emboldens his troops, while his death causes immediate rout. 62 93
- Many Orcs fear Li Wei and his sword Nemesis, recognizing him as a catastrophic enemy even before engaging him. 59 100 154 186
Adaptability and warfare
Despite their reputation for stupidity, Orcs possess a strong instinct for warfare and can organize large-scale operations. 320
- They build siege ladders, operate battering rams and catapults, and field siege engines. 12 13 394
- Orc armies use ambushes, cavalry patrols, fortified camps, and large-scale encirclement tactics. 22 91 165
- Some leaders show tactical awareness, including recognizing unwinnable assaults or using Wargs to cover a retreat. 22 62 252
- Their armies can be reinforced by Trolls, Ogres, Olog-hai, Great Beasts, Earthworms, and Ringwraiths. 86 165 251
Society and Command
Orc society is hierarchical but unstable. Strength, fear, and proximity to a powerful master determine authority more reliably than loyalty or planning. 45 214
Chieftains and captains
Local chieftains command raiding bands, cavalry squads, and settlements, often through intimidation.
- A minor leader throttles a protesting Orc into submission and orders reinforcements against Li Wei. 45
- The Orc King rules Goblin-town and may be the leader of the Misty Mountains Orcs. 26
- Azog commands a major Moria and Misty Mountains army, with Bolg serving as his deputy and later leading retreating forces. 72 93
- When a Ringwraith kills a siege leader for questioning orders, it appoints a simple-minded Orc replacement who obeys without hesitation. 252
Service to dark powers
Many Orcs acknowledge Sauron as their ultimate master and display loyalty to him despite their chaotic nature. 138 338
- Mordor Orcs are directly controlled by Sauron and are more resolute and better equipped than many mountain Orcs. 159 269
- Misty Mountains Orcs can produce their own leaders and retain more independence, allowing powerful chiefs to bargain with Sauron. 269
- Saruman shelters Orcs near Isengard in exchange for service, later using the Star Ring to mark some with the White Hand and enforce absolute loyalty. 269 328
- Orcs serving Dragons abandon their masters and aid Li Wei after realizing that the Dragons can no longer protect them. 315
Uruks
Uruks are a stronger, more disciplined Orc breed associated with Mordor. 162
- They are nearly as tall as humans and generally possess greater physical ability, intelligence, obedience, and unity than ordinary Orcs. 162 213
- Uruks regard smaller Orcs as inferior slaves and can command both Orcs and some Trolls. 162
- A force of armored Uruks with battle axes and butcher’s blades is considered significantly more dangerous than an equally sized ordinary Orc force. 162
- The Uruk leader at Dale eventually realizes that the Witch-king has manipulated him and retreats from the siege. 257
Relationship with Goblins
The narrative usually distinguishes Orcs from Goblins: Goblins are smaller, more cunning mountain-dwellers, while Orcs are more commonly encountered outside in raids and warfare. 59
However, the narration notes that “Orc” and “Goblin” can refer to the same race in the original source material; the story retains separate terms for its own practical distinction. 59
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Windcloud Peak raids — A ragtag half-orc band ambushes Li Wei after he reveals his position with a torch. Falrodan secretly supports Li Wei with arrows, killing would-be ambushers and their minor leader. 9 10
- First castle siege — An Orc cavalry squad of more than a hundred, including dozens of Warg riders, attacks Li Wei’s new fortress. After failing to breach its walls, they begin building ladders until Li Wei devastates their camp with aerial TNT strikes. 10 12 13
- Misty Mountains conflict — Orc cavalry repeatedly clashes with Li Wei around Troll Forest and the mountains. Their raids earn Li Wei growing renown among the Free Peoples and spread fear of his fortress among Orc survivors. 22 23 27
- Goblin-town and the Orc King — The Orc King recognizes Li Wei as the “Foe of Orcs.” Li Wei later kills him during Gandalf and the Dwarves’ escape, pushing his Misty Mountains Orc reputation to Arch-Enemy. 59 60 61
- Azog’s campaign — Azog and Bolg lead a vast Orc host from Moria and surrounding wilderness toward the Lonely Mountain. Azog’s eventual death shatters the army’s morale, earns Li Wei the title “Orc Bane,” and leaves him branded a “Great Enemy” among the Misty Mountains Orcs. 72 93
- Moria resurgence — In Khazad-dûm, Li Wei provokes and battles a large Orc army. Their chaos and devotion to Sauron are emphasized shortly before the Balrog emerges, causing the Orcs and other creatures to flee. 136 137 138
- Half-orc town campaign — Li Wei and Bard’s army defend the entrance to a half-orc town, then clear it with minimal survivors escaping north. 178 179
- Uruk and Easterling operations — Li Wei and Falrodan infiltrate an Easterling capital occupied by a disciplined Uruk-led army. The Uruks maintain order among ordinary Orcs and Trolls while preparing for war. 162 165
- Wars of the Free Peoples — Orc armies participate in major assaults on Riverside Fortress, Dale, Helm’s Deep, Osgiliath, Minas Tirith, and Mordor’s final defense. Their armies rely increasingly on Ringwraiths, siege engines, Olog-hai, Great Beasts, and allied evil creatures. 247 249 380 393 394 401
- Mordor’s collapse — During the final advance into Mordor, mixed Orc, Uruk, Ogre, Olog-hai, spider, and Great Beast forces are steadily forced back toward the Black Gate by the human coalition. 401 402
