Background / History
Bilbo lived at Bag End in Hobbiton and initially considered himself firmly unsuited to adventure. When Li Wei first arrived in the Shire, Bilbo welcomed him into his home, shared food with him, and repeatedly asked him to stay and tell stories of the wider world. Li Wei's tales of Orcs, Elves, and distant lands gradually awakened Bilbo's curiosity, despite his preference for comfort and security. 2 3 31
Before the Quest of Erebor, Bilbo helped Li Wei with provisions and a map when he departed the Shire. Li Wei's rations sustained him through his rapid journey eastward, while Bilbo remained reluctant to leave home himself. 4
Gandalf later recruited Bilbo as the burglar for Thorin Oakenshield's expedition. Bilbo initially refused and fainted at the prospect of signing the contract, but ultimately joined after reflecting on Li Wei's stories and the appeal of becoming part of an adventure. 49 50
Personality
Bilbo combines traditional Hobbit comforts—good food, hospitality, home, and routine—with the adventurousness associated with his Took ancestry. He is optimistic and sociable, but becomes restless when confined to a quiet life for too long. 3 311 330
Though easily frightened by danger, Bilbo repeatedly acts with courage when his companions need him. He refuses to betray the Dwarves while held by Ogres, returns to Thorin's company after escaping the Goblin tunnels, and later attempts to volunteer as Ring-bearer despite his age. 53 61 360
In later life, Bilbo becomes reflective about age, loneliness, legacy, and the future of Bag End. He writes his memoirs, chooses Frodo as his heir, and seeks one final journey beyond the Shire. 307 323 326 330

Story Role / Major Arcs
Friendship with Li Wei
Bilbo is Li Wei's first major connection in the Shire. He offers immediate hospitality, provides travel provisions and a map, and becomes fascinated by Li Wei's accounts of the world beyond Hobbiton. 1 3 4 31
Quest of Erebor
Bilbo joins Thorin's Company as its burglar, leaves the Shire for the first time, faces Orcs and Ogres, visits Rivendell, and is separated from the company during the Goblin capture. 50 51 53 56 58
During his separation, Bilbo finds the One Ring, outwits Gollum in a riddle contest, and uses invisibility to escape the Goblin tunnels. He returns to the company rather than abandoning it, earning the Dwarves' respect. 60 61
At Erebor, Thorin gives Bilbo mithril armor. Bilbo later defies efforts to keep him from the battlefield and disappears from Lake-town's walls to take part in the conflict. 87 89 92
Return to the Shire
After the quest, Bilbo finds the Sackville-Baggins family attempting to take possession of Bag End after falsely announcing his death. His burglar contract helps prove his identity and secure his home. 104
He remains close to Li Wei, visits Roadside Fortress, attends its inter-racial celebrations, and later brings Li Wei to Frodo Baggins's birth feast in Buckland. 104 235 296 297
Frodo's Guardian and Heirship
As Bilbo grows older and more solitary, he becomes increasingly protective of Frodo following Drogo and Primula's recklessness and eventual deaths. Frodo moves into Bag End, and Bilbo formally names him heir, thwarting the Sackville-Baggins family's ambitions. 307 323 326
Departure and the One Ring
At age 111, Bilbo plans a final journey, writes a letter leaving Bag End and his belongings to Frodo, and hosts a grand farewell celebration. His prolonged possession of the One Ring leaves him unnaturally youthful but increasingly possessive and unstable. 330 331 332
Despite calling the Ring “mine,” Bilbo ultimately relinquishes it to Frodo and entrusts Gandalf with ensuring its destruction. 332
Council of Elrond
Bilbo offers to carry the One Ring to Mordor himself, believing that he should resolve the danger connected to his discovery. Gandalf refuses because Bilbo has borne the Ring too long, after which Frodo accepts the task. 360
