Background / History

Thorin was a downcast heir of Durin’s line living among the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains. His overriding ambition was to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, a desire that had grown stronger since he inherited the title of Durin the Deathless. Despite this burden, he retained the bearing and abilities expected of a king, and continued smithing to keep himself ready for battle. 34 35

While searching near the Brown Lands for his missing father, Thráin, Thorin encountered Gandalf in Bree. Gandalf recognized him as Thráin’s son and revealed that enemies had placed a bounty on Thorin’s head. They concluded that reclaiming Erebor required recovering the Arkenstone, the King’s Jewel needed to rally the seven Dwarven clans. 47 48

Thorin recruited twelve Dwarves and formed an expedition to the Lonely Mountain. He accepted Li Wei into the company after recognizing him from the Blue Mountains, and later accepted Bilbo Baggins as the expedition’s burglar. 50

Thorin is proud, determined, and intensely conscious of his royal duty. He regards the recovery of Erebor as both his birthright and an obligation to his people. Thorin is introduced in the Blue Mountains as a battle-prepared Dwarven leader consumed by the dream of reclaiming Erebor. After meeting Gandalf in Bree and learning of the bounty on his head, he commits to an expedition to recover the Arkenstone and restore the Kingdom Under the Mountain. 34 47 48
