Background / History

Númenórean legacy

Gondor was founded by survivors of Númenor alongside Arnor after Númenor sank beneath the sea. The two successor realms preserved the legacy of Númenórean Men, though Arnor later fell to the Witch-king. 151

Isildur built Minas Ithil as a sister city to the capital and a forward bulwark near Mordor. It was captured by the Ringwraiths, later reclaimed after Sauron’s defeat, and eventually lost again; under the Witch-king it became Minas Morgul, a poisoned stronghold hostile to living creatures. 213

The land later known as Rohan was once Gondor’s province of Calenardon. After the Éothéod came to Gondor’s aid during the Balchoth invasion, Gondor granted them the territory to establish Rohan. 269

Rule of the Stewards

After Gondor’s royal bloodline was broken, the kingdom was governed by Viziers/Stewards rather than kings. Only one possessing true royal blood could lawfully claim the throne. 208

Denethor’s vigilance

Denethor uses the Arnor Palantír to observe Mordor, Ithilien, Gondor, Rohan, and distant figures such as Aragorn and Gandalf. He withstands Sauron’s direct pressure, but continued use of the stone burdens him physically and mentally. 313 318

Siege of Minas Tirith

Mordor’s campaign begins with the fall of Osgiliath. Faramir is wounded by a Morgul-blade, while the Witch-king advances on Minas Tirith. 393

During the siege, Gandalf and Denethor command the defense against Ringwraiths, Olog-hai, siege engines, and Grond. Rohan’s cavalry arrives to relieve the city when its gates are breached. 394
