Background / History
Cynthia grew up in Celestic Town, where her grandmother, Professor Rowan, directs the Historical Research Institute. Her parents are traveling historians. Time spent at her grandmother’s home fostered Cynthia’s interest in mythology and history, which she continues to pursue alongside her Champion duties 206.
Her research takes her to remote ruins. When the Sinnoh Pokémon League cannot open a newly discovered site on Mt. Coronet, it entrusts the investigation to her. Cynthia invites Xia Chen because of his interest in Hisui; together they uncover an ancient temple with statues of Dialga and Palkia and evidence of a destroyed third statue 197 208 209 210.
Appearance
Cynthia is tall and slender, with long golden hair and a distinctive all-black outfit 119.
- Clothing: Black pencil pants and a matching calf-length coat 119.
- Features: Delicate face and phoenix-shaped eyes 119 203.
Personality
Cynthia is direct and competitive in battle, but playful with friends. She repeatedly challenges Xia Chen at fighting games despite losing badly to his Sylveon, then enjoys playing against Xia Chen himself 204. She is more enthusiastic about training and archaeology than routine League work, which she avoids when possible 215 221.
She takes danger and her responsibilities as Champion seriously. Cynthia travels to confront Xia Chen after his battle with Miraidon and later challenges his decision to conceal a potential Groudon-and-Kyogre crisis from her. In both cases, her anger centers on his safety and his habit of facing major risks alone 273 344.
Abilities & Skills
Pokémon Battling

- Battlefield control: Her Garchomp spreads Sand Tomb across an arena to constrain Caitlin’s Metagross 296.
- Deception and traps: Against Xia Chen’s Sylveon, Cynthia uses Heatran’s Smokescreen and misleading attacks to conceal a Stone Edge cage, then anticipates Sylveon’s Water-type response with Solar Beam 591.
