Background

Koraidon initially believed itself to be an Ancient Paradox Pokémon transported from an ancient era, where members of its species once lived in groups. It was separated from that homeland, captured by the Area Zero Research Institute, and left unable to use another Poké Ball while its original ball still existed. Its central wish was to find a way home. 270 272

Years after arriving in Area Zero, Koraidon and Miraidon learned disturbing information from the Scarlet and Violet Book. Miraidon went berserk, killing the original professors Sada and Turo; the two Legendary Pokémon subsequently became enemies. Koraidon later revealed that the scientists now operating Zero Lab were likely artificial intelligences created in advance. 382

The truth uncovered in Zero Lab was more complicated: AI Sada states that Paradox Pokémon were not literally brought from the past or future, but were created by Terapagos from human imagination and the depictions in the Scarlet and Violet Book. Despite this revelation, Koraidon continues to value its memories, its longing for home, and its chosen bonds. 386

Appearance

Koraidon is a huge scarlet, orange-red, reptilian Pokémon resembling an oversized Cyclizar while remaining visibly distinct from that species. It has jagged, adjustable back scales, a feathered head crest, long whip-like plumes that can spread into wing-like structures, and a body that can radiate sunlike crimson light. 268 276 293

  • Scarlet-red body with a large, imposing frame. 268
  • Feathered head plumes that rise sharply in battle and can unfurl into long wings. 307
  • Back scales can be reshaped to make riding more comfortable. 276
  • Generates a brilliant orange-red radiance when releasing its power. 293
  • Its Terastalized state temporarily changes its body into reddish-brown crystal armor. 386

Personality

Koraidon is proud, stubborn, and highly conscious of its dignity. It initially refuses to eat in front of Xia Chen's group, resists being treated as an ordinary team member, and dislikes fighting opponents it considers much weaker than itself. 268 274 302

Its pride is balanced by considerable kindness. It accepts Xia Chen's hospitality only gradually, praises Dreepy's weak but sincere medicine rather than discouraging him, rescues Sylveon during the battle with Orthworm, and donates a Heart Feather to revive a Dreepy soul despite complaining about it. 274 281 288

Koraidon is also sensitive and easily embarrassed. It conceals its enjoyment of food, healing, petting, and carrying Xia Chen, often responding with sarcasm or feigned indifference. Its growing attachment to Xia Chen's team leads it to reconsider its centuries of isolation and accept the possibility of a new family. 268 269 276 281

Abilities & Skills

  • Explains Aura's spiritual nature to Xia Chen. 276
  • Teaches Xia Chen that Calm Mind can strengthen Aura as well as Psychic abilities. 276
  • Guides Xia Chen in learning Aura Sphere and Aura barriers. 276
  • Counters Ultra Necrozma's fear-inducing aura with its own aura, restoring Xia Chen's clarity. 582

Mobility

Koraidon functions as Xia Chen's primary long-distance transport.

  • Flies at extreme speed and can carry passengers through the air. 280 347
  • Travels faster than Clavell's Gym-level Cyclizar even while weakened. 276
  • Can travel underwater while carrying Xia Chen. 347
  • Adjusts its back scales to accommodate riders. 276

Combat Techniques

Koraidon is a close-range Legendary combatant with powerful Fighting-, Dragon-, and Fire-type techniques.

  • Collision Course — Signature Fighting-type charge attack that gains further power against targets weak to it. 307
  • True Collision Course — Its finishing variation; the attack devastates multiple stadium barriers and defeats Darkrai. 308
  • Dragon Claw — Used repeatedly in coordinated assaults against Miraidon. 384 385
  • Drain Punch — Lets it recover strength while fighting; Xia Chen uses it to counter Darkrai's Dream Eater strategy. 308
  • Outrage — Grants enormous power but drives Koraidon into a prolonged frenzy and later confusion. 385 386
  • Swords Dance — Rapidly boosts its physical strength; it completes three boosts while Xia Chen shields it from Miraidon. 384 385
  • Flame Charge and Flamethrower — Flame Charge increases its speed, while its Flamethrower can overpower Articuno's Ice Beam. 385 421
  • Dragon Rush — Used against Ultra Necrozma after being enhanced by Gothitelle's Helping Hand. 582

Counterattack System

Koraidon possesses a private system interface called the Counterattack System.

  • Provides missions, a System Shop, Shop Points, and item rewards. 274 282
  • Initially gives Dragon- and Fighting-type training resources that are largely insignificant compared with Koraidon's condition. 274
  • Rewards it with Universal Healing Capsules and Rare Candies for completing missions. 282 388
  • Cannot be refused when it assigns a mission. 274
  • Its missions push Koraidon into battles it considers beneath its dignity, including defeating Sylveon and helping Xia Chen win a championship. 274 282 310

Origin Energy and Materials

Koraidon's body contains valuable Legendary-level Origin Energy.

  • Naturally shed feathers and scales are valuable materials, making it a potential target for hostile collectors. 274
  • Donates a Heart Feather containing part of its Origin Energy to help reincarnate a Dreepy soul. 288
  • The Heart Feather produces a unique Fighting/Dragon Dreepy with Koraidon-like coloration and exceptional potential. 288

Equipment / Items

  • Custom Poké Ball — Koraidon's original ball, entrusted to Arven and later transferred to Xia Chen. It allows Koraidon to remain Xia Chen's legal partner. 274
  • Counterattack System — Private interface granting missions, rewards, inventory storage, and Shop Points. 274 282
  • Universal Healing Capsules — System medicine that repairs its damaged Origin Energy and eventually restores it to peak condition. 282 388
  • Rare Candies — System rewards used to raise Koraidon's energy intensity beyond its former peak. 388 389

Relationships

  • Xia Chen — Partner and rider. Xia Chen rescues Koraidon, offers it a path home without restricting its freedom, and later becomes the person Koraidon trusts most in battle. 268 272 308
  • Miraidon — Bitter rival and former associate from Area Zero. Their conflict is tied to the deaths of Sada and Turo, their differing responses to the truth of their origins, and Koraidon's desire for revenge. 382 385 387
  • Sylveon — Healer, sparring partner, and teammate. Sylveon repeatedly heals Koraidon, defeats it during early training, and later receives protection from it during the Orthworm battle. 268 274 281
  • Dreepy / Dragapult — Koraidon encourages Dreepy's medicine-making and donates a Heart Feather to revive Dragapult's companion. 274 288
  • Gardevoir — One of Koraidon's earliest healers and Xia Chen's protector during Koraidon's attempted departure from the yacht. 268 270

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rescue and Partnership

Koraidon crashes into the sea near Xia Chen's yacht while badly injured and unconscious. Xia Chen and Milotic rescue it from attacking Cetoddle, while Gardevoir and Sylveon treat its injuries. Initially planning to flee once healed, Koraidon instead accepts Xia Chen's offer to travel together while searching for a way home. 268 272

Recovery in Paldea

After its first clash with Miraidon leaves it weakened, Koraidon joins Xia Chen's team and begins a long recovery. Herba Mystica, team support, training with Sylveon, and Counterattack System rewards gradually restore its strength. 273 282

World Youth Championships

Koraidon becomes Xia Chen's hidden trump card in the World Youth Championships final against Tobias's Darkrai. It initially loses momentum after falling into Darkrai's Nightmare Domain, but Xia Chen reaches it through Aura and Telepathy. Koraidon adapts its fighting style, uses Taunt to deny Dark Void, and defeats Darkrai with True Collision Course. 307 308

Return to Area Zero

Koraidon leads Xia Chen through Area Zero to confront Miraidon and reveals the history of the original Sada, Turo, and Miraidon's berserk rampage. During the rematch, it protects Xia Chen from Thunderbolt, battles through Terastalization, and loses control after using Outrage. 382 384 386

Restoration and Later Battles

A Universal Healing Capsule restores Koraidon to level 93, and Rare Candies raise its energy intensity beyond its former peak. It subsequently overwhelms Articuno, supports Xia Chen in major Legendary crises, and withstands Ultra Necrozma's Dark Pulse long enough to continue fighting. 388 389 421 582

Trivia

  • Koraidon had not allowed anyone to ride on its back for more than two hundred years before Xia Chen. 276
  • It is four times weak to Fairy-type attacks, yet accepts Sylveon's Fairy-type life-energy healing. 268
  • It dislikes being called a fake, though it initially pretends to appreciate the “discernment and taste” of people who mistake it for a modified Cyclizar. 277
  • Its Counterattack System incorrectly frames Miraidon as the arrogant opponent in a “poor youth” revenge story. 310
