Background
Gardevoir began as Xia Chen’s Ralts, deeply attached to him and proud to be his chosen Pokémon. When Xia Chen met Diantha on Route 14, Ralts joined his playful claim that she would someday surpass Diantha’s Gardevoir. 123
As Kirlia, she entered the Mystery Dungeon simulation and spent more than a year within its virtual world. She and her simulated companions defeated Dark Dialga and restored time, but Kirlia was left grieving the loss of Pikachu, Chatot, Wigglytuff, and the guild members she had come to care about. 219
The simulation’s SSS evaluation awarded Kirlia an Energy Level +5, which triggered her evolution into Gardevoir. Azelf’s Eye, a reward containing the Lake Guardian’s emotional power, fused into her left eye during the evolution. 219
After evolving, Gardevoir pledged to protect Xia Chen just as he had protected her when she was smaller. Despite her greater height and strength, she continued insisting on staying close to him, including sleeping beside him under the pretext of guarding him. 219 221
Appearance
Gardevoir is a tall Shiny Gardevoir whose elegant, mature appearance contrasts with her still-childlike behavior. She is approximately twenty-five centimeters taller than the average member of her species and stands close to Xia Chen’s height. 219
- Her normal form has a flowing white dress-like body, sapphire-blue hair, pale blue skin, and an orange-red chest horn used to store energy. 219 338
- Azelf’s Eye fused with her left eye, leaving it visibly darker and described as unusually captivating. 219
- As Mega Gardevoir, she remains around 1.8 meters tall but gains a voluminous black dress, additional bow-like chest horns, and symmetrical horn-like ornaments beneath her hair. 357
- Her Shiny Mega form’s black dress is distinctive enough that Diantha considered it especially desirable. 357
Personality
Gardevoir is affectionate, possessive, and intensely devoted to Xia Chen. She sees herself as both his former dependent and his future protector, yet retains habits that make Xia Chen view her as a child at heart. 219 221
She is competitive with her teammates, particularly Sylveon. As Kirlia, she repeatedly compared the strength of her Return to Sylveon’s, refusing to accept that their bond with Xia Chen could be weaker. 221
Her affection does not prevent her from being independent or analytical. She privately researched Azelf’s Eye to avoid endangering the team, identified its connection to Emotional Energy, and devised ways to mitigate its delayed activation time without waiting for Xia Chen to solve the problem for her. 221
In battle, Gardevoir is disciplined and calm rather than reckless. She can execute complex feints, delayed attacks, terrain control, and sacrificial plans with minimal prompting because of her trust in Xia Chen. 227 305 415
“From now on, I’ll be the one protecting you!” 219
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Perception and Telepathy
Gardevoir can sense energy fluctuations, communicate mentally with Xia Chen, and use Psychic power for both combat and fine control.
- Detected Jolteon’s pre-charged Thunder before it was released, allowing her to Teleport behind the attacker. 226
- Uses telepathic coordination with Xia Chen to prepare hidden attacks and react in poor visibility. 232 405
- Diagnosed Charcadet’s abnormal disparity between Amateur-class physical strength and near-Gym-level Psychic power. 320
- Can manipulate battlefield materials with Psychic power, including controlling sand so it could not smother a Fire Field. 405
Teleportation and Illusory Movement
Teleport is Gardevoir’s defining mobility tool, used to evade attacks, reverse positioning, and create openings for counterattacks.
- Frequently Teleports behind opponents to punish missed charges with moves such as Psyshock, Shadow Ball, Mystical Fire, or Thunderbolt. 226 305
- Combines Teleport with Double Team to create decoys, including an underwater double that let her evade Swampert’s Waterfall while continuing to charge Energy Ball. 339
- Can chain Teleport with Double Team during high-speed Mega battles, though repeated use consumes substantial energy. 399
- Two consecutive Teleports against Dragonite consumed nearly half of her energy, making excessive use dangerous. 367
Azelf’s Eye and Emotional Energy
Azelf’s Eye fused with Gardevoir’s left eye after her evolution. Its initial red beam caused no physical damage, but Xia Chen felt Gardevoir’s emotions through it. 219 221
- Emotional Energy can enhance attacks, stat boosts, status moves, terrain moves, and weather moves. 221
- Her initial experiments raised Psychic from roughly 2,413 to 3,658 measured power when combined with Emotional Energy. 221
- Enhanced Calm Mind nearly matched the effect of two ordinary uses, while an enhanced Thunderbolt helped one-shot Yin Yuan’s Gyarados. 226
- Later refinement allowed her to increase a move’s power by nearly fifty percent for roughly a thirty-percent increase in casting time. 399
- The technique originally increased move preparation from about one second to three, creating a major vulnerability against fast opponents. 221
Battlefield Control
Gardevoir’s move pool emphasizes setup, disruption, and timing rather than direct exchanges.
- Calm Mind — Raises her offensive and special defensive power; Emotional Energy can greatly amplify its effect. 221 226
- Trick Room — Reverses speed dynamics and has been used to dismantle speed-based teams and Mega Beedrill’s advantage. 258 399 415
- Light Screen, Misty Terrain, and Protect — Supports teammates, mitigates damage, cures Sylveon’s paralysis through Misty Terrain, and creates safe windows for plans to resolve. 227 338
- Future Sight and Destiny Bond — Uses delayed or sacrificial techniques to force unfavorable trades; Destiny Bond eliminated Wash Rotom after Gardevoir fell. 227 368 415
- Hypnosis, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt — Disrupts opponents through sleep, burn, and status denial. 264 305
Offensive Move Pool
Gardevoir has demonstrated unusually broad coverage for a Psychic/Fairy Pokémon.
- Psyshock exploits weaker physical defenses, notably against Jolteon. 226
- Thunderbolt, Thunder, and Volt Switch provide Electric coverage against Water- and Flying-type opponents. 226 237 368
- Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, Magical Leaf, and Swift are major Fairy-type options; Mega Evolution grants Pixilate, converting Swift into a Fairy-type attack. 339 400
- Energy Ball, Ice Beam, Mystical Fire, Fire Blast, Hydro Pump, and Shadow Ball let her exploit type matchups or reshape the field. 232 338 368 405
- Her completed Agile Move Manual increases move activation speed by 30% at the cost of 20% power or effect. 292
Mega Evolution
Gardevoir can Mega Evolve using her Gardevoirite and Xia Chen’s Key Stone when their minds are synchronized. 357
- Her Psychic nature makes her mental connection with Xia Chen particularly smooth. 357
- Mega Evolution greatly improves her combat presence but does not erase her dependence on precise energy management. 366 399
- Xia Chen can Mega Evolve Gardevoir and Sylveon simultaneously, but doing so creates severe mental strain and is impractical for sustained combat. 357
Equipment / Items
- Azelf’s Eye — Crimson gem containing Azelf’s fundamental emotional energy; permanently fused with her left eye. 219
- Psychic-Fairy Gem — A synthesized gem given to her by Dreepy as a suitable training item. 228
- Agile Move Manual — Three simulation fragments synthesized into a technique that increases move activation speed. 292
- Gardevoirite — Her unique Mega Stone, assembled through simulator rewards and used for Mega Evolution. 318 344 357
- Faux Plates — Obtained from special Hisui simulation opponents, including Faux Insect, Meadow, and Zap Plates. 246 292
Relationships
- Xia Chen — Trainer and closest companion. Gardevoir is fiercely attached to him, shares a strong telepathic connection with him, and vowed to become his protector after evolving. 219 305
- Sylveon — Teammate, elder-sister figure, and friendly rival. They competed over the strength of their Return moves and later shared a playful rivalry over Mega Evolution. 221 357
- Diantha — A distant benchmark and fellow Gardevoir Trainer. Xia Chen’s early claim that his Ralts would surpass Diantha’s Gardevoir began a lighthearted rivalry between the two Trainers. 123
- Dreepy — Younger teammate who gave Gardevoir a Psychic-Fairy Gem; she encouraged him despite his lack of confidence in the item. 228
- Cogita — Her guide in the Hisui simulation, who explained the mission to stop Dialga and Palkia and obtain the Red Chain through the Lake Guardians’ trials. 222
- Cynthia and Caitlin — Both witnessed her evolution. Caitlin recognized that Gardevoir’s Psychic aura was nearing Elite level but could not identify the power hidden in her left eye. 219
Story Role / Major Arcs
*Mystery Dungeon* Simulation
As Kirlia, she completed the simulation’s main quest by helping defeat Dark Dialga and restore time. The emotional loss of her virtual companions directly preceded her evolution into Gardevoir and the fusion of Azelf’s Eye. 219
Donghuang Young Trainers Tournament
Gardevoir debuted as Xia Chen’s hidden trump card against Yin Yuan. She evaded Jolteon’s Thunder, crippled Jolteon with Psyshock, used Emotional Energy-enhanced Calm Mind and Thunderbolt to defeat Gyarados, then traded herself for Wash Rotom with Destiny Bond. 226 227
Hisui Simulation Quest
Gardevoir entered the fully immersive Hisui simulation to gain experience, investigate the origins of Zoroark and Goodra, and complete the Lake Guardians’ trials for the Red Chain. She deliberately farmed levels, sought special Pokémon for rewards, and eventually defeated Alpha Zoroark before passing Uxie’s trial. 222 246 292 317
Mega Evolution Discovery
After obtaining Gardevoirite fragments through the simulator, Gardevoir learned that Mega Evolution required her Mega Stone, Xia Chen’s Key Stone, and harmony between their hearts and minds. She later completed her first Mega Evolution alongside Mega Sylveon. 318 357
High-Level Tournament Battles
Gardevoir repeatedly proved capable of fighting opponents stronger than herself through positioning and layered tactics. She forced a draw against Wallace’s Near-Elite Four Swampert, defeated Steven’s Metagross through Hypnosis and Burn, and helped Xia Chen reach the World Gym Leader Tournament final by defeating Giovanni’s Mega Beedrill. 339 305 415
Later Growth
Following special training under Legendary Pokémon, Gardevoir became one of Xia Chen’s first-echelon combatants, assessed as comparable to the ace Pokémon of ordinary Champions. 575
Trivia
- Gardevoir’s left eye appears darker than her right because Azelf’s Eye fused into it during her evolution. 219
- She is significantly taller than the average Gardevoir, by approximately twenty-five centimeters. 219
- She inherited roughly seventy percent of Xia Chen’s cooking skill and can help provide meals when he is away. 246
- Although she looks mature after evolving, her restless sleeping led to her chest horn painfully pressing into Xia Chen while she slept beside him. 221
