Background / History

Elena served as the medical officer attached to the Undying Flame expedition investigating a Necron obelisk. When a Magos accidentally activated the structure’s defenses, the resulting stasis pulses killed the rest of the expedition. Elena survived only because she had been recording data beneath the obelisk’s glyphs and was within its protective field; she remained trapped inside for three days with dwindling food supplies. 35

She encountered Li Wei after he entered the obelisk to escape a surface pulse. His Pariah nature caused her immediate nausea and revulsion, but her Hospitaller oath compelled her to shelter him as a fellow survivor. Though unable to approach him closely, she shared her limited nutrient soup with him. 35

When a Necron Lord awakened, Li Wei defended Elena and led her deeper into the tomb. Their attempt to shut down the stasis-pulse system brought them into conflict with the Tomb Technician, which used the captured Archmagos Kilgrave to threaten Elena and force Li Wei into a Soul Stripping Chamber. 36 37

After Li Wei overloaded the chamber, Elena helped him escape with Kilgrave’s Phase Transfer Orbs. She subsequently endured the Dead Space of Exorcism, a Necron field that suppressed her faith, memories, and emotions, and relied on Li Wei’s blood and void field to conceal her soul signature from the tomb’s hollowed-out inhabitants and scanners. 38 39 40

Elena accompanied Li Wei through the tomb’s soul-harvesting complex and into its central systems. She witnessed him release a C’tan fragment to destroy the Necron containment network, then stood with him when an Inquisition battlecruiser prepared to destroy the entire Tomb World. A portal extracted them immediately before Exterminatus. 41 42 43

The pair emerged aboard the Dark Mechanicum vessel Pain, where Archmagos Axis selected Elena for experiments intended to convert her suffering into daemon-engine fuel. Li Wei and Atticus rescued her during a furnace-hall sabotage and escaped through the ship’s waste systems. 44 45

Elena later helped Li Wei save the wounded Atticus as the freed C’tan Shard dismantled Pain. The three reached Medusa aboard a transformed Necron shuttle, where Elena’s injuries and trauma left her feverish and weakened. 48 49

On Medusa, Archmagos Karrg deemed Elena unnecessary to the Iron Hands and arranged her transfer to the Sororitas ship Hand of Mercy. Elena chose to return to the Sisterhood rather than remain within Clan Raukaan’s machine-dominated fortress, bidding Li Wei farewell before departing. 50
