Background

Xue Ye is the father of four princes and the elder brother of Prince Xue Xing. Before the succession crisis, he intended for his concubine-born fourth son, Xue Beng, to inherit Xue Xing’s principality rather than compete for the imperial throne; Xue Xing could not have children and had raised Xue Beng closely. 5

He regards the Heaven Dou Imperial Family’s inherited Swan Spirit as politically symbolic but combat-ineffective. Xue Qinghe’s apparent mutation into the Ice Crystal Swan therefore becomes, in his view, a rare opportunity to establish a stronger imperial bloodline. 5 6 16

Personality

Xue Ye is emotionally affected by his children’s suffering, rushing personally to Xue Qinghe’s residence after the attack and despairing at the prospect of leaving the empire to Xue Beng. 5 His paternal affection is nevertheless closely tied to political capability: Qinghe’s apparent strength and potential make him his favored heir, while Xue Beng’s recklessness earns repeated contempt and punishment. 8 9 13

He is pragmatic when faced with superior power. Although he believes Dugu Bo was involved in Xue Beng’s death and knows Spirit Hall was connected to the attacks on his sons, he avoids provoking either force because the empire cannot afford powerful enemies. 9 15 53

Xue Ye can be impatient and quick-tempered when Heaven Dou’s authority is challenged, particularly by Xue Beng and the defiant vassal states. He can, however, accept a restrained strategy when ministers and Jin Hao demonstrate that direct confrontation would endanger the empire. 8 22 24

Story Role

Succession Crisis

After learning that the Second and Third Princes had been killed and the First Prince had been attacked, Xue Ye hurried to First Prince Manor with imperial physicians. He accepted the staged account that Xue Qinghe had been forcibly made to absorb an Ice Crystal Swan spirit ring. 4 5

The physicians’ report that Qinghe had survived, reached Level 26, and gained ice-attributed offensive Soul Power transformed Xue Ye’s despair into hope. He accepted Jin Hao’s fabricated explanation that Qinghe’s Swan Spirit had mutated into the Ice Crystal Swan and pledged imperial resources to make him a Title Douluo. 5 6

At the funeral for his dead sons, Xue Ye publicly rebuked Xue Beng for claiming to be “alone” while Qinghe lived. He then warned Xue Xing that Xue Beng’s future lay in inheriting Xue Xing’s principality, not the throne. 8

After Xue Beng was framed for attacking Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling, Xue Ye stripped him of princely status, ordered his exile to Xue Xing’s fief after recovery, removed Xue Xing from control of the royal academies, and confined him for seven days. 13 When Xue Beng later died, Xue Ye accepted the false account that a healing soul master had failed to discover the fatal injury, choosing not to confront Dugu Bo and confining Xue Xing for six months instead. 15

Establishing the Heir

Xue Ye ordered Lin Cheng to recruit talented youths from across the empire to grow alongside Qinghe as future aides. 9 He also sought the Seven Treasures Glazed Tile School’s protection by offering Ning Fengzhi commercial privileges and the position of Imperial Tutor in exchange for accepting Qinghe as a disciple. 17 28

He supported Jin Hao’s request to grant Oscar a viscountcy despite objections that Oscar lacked the normal qualifications for ennoblement, judging Oscar’s Innate Full Soul Power and loyalty to Qinghe to be more valuable than precedent. 22 23

Xue Ye arranged Qinghe’s engagement to Shui Bing’er, hoping that her Ice Phoenix Martial Soul would strengthen the Imperial Family’s future bloodline. 16 29 At the engagement banquet, he formally named “Xue Qinghe” Crown Prince and granted him the Eastern Palace. 54

Imperial Policy

During the dispute with Kundera and the Balk Kingdom, Xue Ye initially wanted military retaliation for the vassals’ defiance. 22 He ultimately approved a long-term strategy to reclaim the four kingdoms and duchy only after Heaven Dou had rebuilt its army and cultivated stronger Soul Masters; in the immediate term, he sanctioned the Balk Kingdom by cutting military funding and trade in salt, iron, and grain. 24

He later supported Qinghe’s proposed arrangement with Dugu Bo, hoping that curing Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan’s martial-soul-related problems would allow the Poison Douluo to become an Imperial Protector. 55
