History
Nine-Tails Attack and Sealing
After breaking free from Obito's Sharingan control, the Nine-Tails attacks Konoha's outskirts under a crimson moon. Kushina Uzumaki restrains it with Adamantine Sealing Chains despite having already suffered its extraction. 1
The beast attempts to kill newborn Naruto before Minato can complete the sealing, hoping to prevent another imprisonment. Minato uses the Reaper Death Seal to take part of its soul into himself, then seals the remaining chakra into Naruto through the Eight Trigrams Seal. 3
Before Naruto's birth, Konoha's Uzumaki Jinchūriki were capable of suppressing and borrowing the Nine-Tails' chakra reliably. Its rampage is presented as an unprecedented consequence of Obito's control rather than a normal failure of Konoha's containment methods. 3
Mito and Kushina could access Nine-Tails Chakra Mode through their control and sealing methods without being Perfect Jinchūriki. The village generally avoided deploying its Tailed Beast on the front lines because of its strategic value. 3 189
The sealing decision is later questioned by the reanimated Hashirama, who explains that Kushina's Uzumaki vitality would have allowed the Nine-Tails to be sealed back into her shortly after extraction. He also warns that an infant lacks sufficient chakra to withstand the beast's erosion and that such exposure can shorten the child's lifespan. Minato is shocked to learn that returning the beast to its previous host was possible. 233
Early Relationship with Naruto
Naruto enters the sealing space unusually early and seeks Kurama out as a potential partner. Kurama initially threatens him, then ignores his unbroken stream of conversation for three years. 4 5
Although it resents being captured by Hashirama, forced into Madara's summoning contract, and repeatedly sealed inside Uzumaki hosts, Kurama recognizes that Naruto does not approach it with malicious intent. It begins quietly helping him by withdrawing its leaking chakra and permitting Minato's Reverse Eight Trigrams Seal to refine chakra for Naruto's growth. 5
Kurama knows that Naruto cannot truly become a Perfect Jinchūriki without the key to the Eight Trigrams Seal, which Minato left at Mount Myōboku. 5
By the time Naruto attempts to loosen the seal during his Academy years, their relationship has already become cooperative. The paired sealing formulas, rather than Kurama's hostility, are the principal obstacle to a greater flow of chakra: one confines the beast's chakra while the other draws and refines it for Naruto. 23
Shared Battles and Liberation
Naruto deliberately creates circumstances that allow his injury to plausibly trigger Kurama's chakra during Root's pursuit. When Naruto loses consciousness in the Three-Tails state, Kurama takes control and annihilates most of the pursuing squad. 29 30
Kurama recognizes that Naruto deliberately exposed his eye to the kunai and comments on his ruthlessness toward himself. Before it can kill the surviving Root captain, Itachi intervenes with a Fireball Jutsu. 30
Kurama subsequently supplies chakra when Naruto forcibly implants Shisui's right Sharingan into his injured eye socket, assisting the transplant and connection of the foreign eye. 34
At the Grass ninja camp, Naruto's fury allows the chakra to reach four tails. Kurama warns him that releasing more power could break the seal, but Naruto refuses to restrain himself. 60
The ensuing rampage is intensified by the savage negative emotions and remnants of the Ten-Tails' will within the chakra. Naruto eventually regains control by suppressing the Nine-Tails' chakra with his own blue chakra. Afterward, when Naruto asks Kurama to train and refine more chakra, it tells him to strengthen his body first because its existing reserves already exceed what he can safely withstand. 61 62
When Fugaku Uchiha attempts to control Kurama through the seal with his Mangekyō Sharingan, Kurama's roar drives his consciousness back out. 65
Obito later forces Naruto's seal open to the eighth-tail stage, expecting a second Nine-Tails attack on Konoha. Kurama instead feigns a rampage, ignores Obito's commands, and mocks him while Naruto expels Obito from the sealing space. 73 74
Once Naruto fully breaks the seal, Kurama regains its physical form but does not seek revenge on Konoha. It humiliates Hiruzen Sarutobi by spitting on him, then voluntarily returns to Naruto; Hiruzen recognizes their cooperation as that of a Perfect Jinchūriki. 77 78 79
Later Campaigns
Akatsuki begins preparing to investigate and capture the nine Tailed Beasts. Orochimaru connects this objective with Danzo's information that Konoha possesses a Perfect Jinchūriki, making Naruto and the Nine-Tails an object of interest. 89
Naruto initially worries that extracting Kurama could kill him even with his inherited Sage Body. He considers acquiring Chiyo's One's Own Life Reincarnation and using the vitality of 100,000 White Zetsu as a means of restoring his life. Black Zetsu later obtains the Uzumaki shrine mask and counterspell needed to retrieve the Nine-Tails half trapped with Minato in the Shinigami's stomach. 123 130
During Naruto's confrontation with Gaara, he manifests a controlled four-tailed cloak. Both Naruto and Kurama recognize that Gaara has misunderstood Shukaku's acceptance and his own ability to shape Tailed Beast chakra, attributing his trauma-driven instability to possession. Kurama criticizes Shukaku over the condition of its host, provoking an exchange of insults before Naruto suppresses Shukaku. 142 143
Kurama remains Naruto's primary partner in battles against legendary shinobi, supporting Sage Art: Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, the golden-red chakra-cloaked Wood Human, and Susanoo-armored manifestations. 152 154 155
During Naruto's fight with Hashirama, the two argue over a Tailed Beast Bomb that Hashirama redirects away from Konoha. Kurama insists that it would be stronger if it still possessed its Yin half. 154
Against Itachi at the Valley of the End, Naruto first uses Nine-Tails chakra to produce nine arms carrying Rasengan, then manifests Kurama beneath green Susanoo armor. The armored fox's sword overpowers Itachi's complete Susanoo, and the clash destroys the statues of Hashirama and Madara. 183
After accompanying Naruto into another world, Kurama distinguishes itself from that world's Nine-Tails. It assists Naruto against Shukaku and seeks the capture of the local Nine-Tails as part of Naruto's plan to recreate the Ten-Tails' power. 189 205
Kurama's Yang half remains one of Naruto's trusted companions while Naruto captures the chakra of the other Tailed Beasts. Naruto specifically distinguishes Kurama from the unfamiliar Yin Nine-Tails and the local Nine-Tails, refusing to treat his longtime partner as disposable chakra. 206
After Mito Uzumaki's death in the other world, Naruto captures the chakra of the Nine-Tails released from her, completing his collection of all nine Tailed Beasts' chakra. That beast is distinct from the Yang Nine-Tails that accompanied him. 189 206 211
Release as a Summoned Beast
After Naruto acquires the chakra of all nine Tailed Beasts and begins advancing toward Six Paths power, he releases the Yang Nine-Tails from his body instead of absorbing or sacrificing it. Kurama becomes Naruto's summoned beast, retaining its independent body and identity. 211 225
Naruto subsequently uses the Sage of Six Paths' Tailed Beast Splitting Technique on Kurama, dividing its chakra into nine Nine Masked Beasts: Azure, White, Vermilion, Black, Void, South, North, Three, and Jade. The beasts devastate Kusagakure before reuniting into the complete Nine-Tails. 225
The Yin Nine-Tails, which had remained sealed inside Minato, is a separate consciousness from Kurama's Yang half. Naruto later releases and subjugates it with the Rinnegan, then leaves it for Obito to use in reviving the Ten-Tails; this does not affect the Yang Nine-Tails serving Naruto as a summoned beast. 239 242
Naruto frees the Yin half through Eight Trigrams Unsealing during his confrontation with Minato. It briefly celebrates its release in the form of a gigantic black fox, but Naruto's Rinnegan control immediately stops its movement. 239
Kurama later appears beneath Naruto during his confrontation with Madara, and Naruto uses its Tailed Beast Bomb to counter Madara's Wood Release. After Naruto trades away the Yin half, Madara attempts to summon the Yang Nine-Tails but receives no response. 241 242
Obito then uses chakra chains to drag the unresisting Yin Nine-Tails into the Ten-Tails. The resulting Ten-Tails later approaches its third stage and devastates the battlefield before Hashirama restrains it. Black Zetsu ultimately severs Obito's control, allowing Madara to reclaim his Rinnegan and become the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki. These developments concern the Ten-Tails containing the separate Yin half; Kurama's Yang half is not shown being recaptured or incorporated into it. 242 245 246
Appearance
Kurama normally manifests as a colossal fox with nine chakra tails. Within Naruto's sealing space, it is confined behind an enormous iron gate; when fully released, it returns to its giant physical form. 1 5 77
- Red or black-red chakra cloaks surround Naruto during partial releases. 29 61
- The eight-tail release takes the form of a destructive skeletal fox manifestation. 73 74
- In later battles, it appears in golden-red chakra forms. 152 154
- It can be covered in Naruto's Susanoo armor, culminating in Armored Susanoo: Beast's Calamity. 183 205
- After becoming Naruto's summoned beast, it appears as a fiery red, independent giant fox rather than solely as chakra housed within Naruto. 225
- Its chakra can be separated into nine distinct Nine Masked Beasts, each possessing an individual appearance and ability before recombining into Kurama. 225
- The separate Yin Nine-Tails manifests as a gigantic black fox after its release from Minato. 239
Personality
Kurama is proud, hostile toward those who treat it as a weapon, and deeply resentful of its history of coercion by Hashirama, Madara, and Konoha's Jinchūriki system. It initially regards Naruto's attempts at friendship with contempt and avoids him by pretending to sleep. 5
It can perceive malicious intent and gradually accepts Naruto because Naruto's persistence is sincere rather than manipulative. Its support begins indirectly—controlling chakra leakage and allowing Naruto to benefit from the seal—before developing into open battlefield cooperation. 5 79
Kurama retains a cruel, combative streak when fighting Naruto's enemies, but it is no longer indiscriminately destructive. It refuses Obito's demand to attack Konoha, sides with Naruto during his confrontation with Minato, and later returns to Naruto voluntarily after being fully freed. 74 75 78
Years of listening to Naruto's complaints leave Kurama with an arsenal of vulgar humor and a habit of mocking Naruto's enemies, particularly Hiruzen and Minato. 77
Despite its aggressive disposition, Kurama is attentive to Naruto's physical limitations. It notices the deliberate self-injury behind his escape plan, warns him when additional chakra threatens the seal, and dismisses demands for greater reserves until Naruto can withstand the power it already possesses. 30 60 62
Kurama values its bond with Naruto enough to aid his pursuit of power while retaining its own distinction from the alternate world's Nine-Tails and the Yin Nine-Tails. Its decision to continue fighting beside Naruto as a summoned beast demonstrates that their partnership no longer depends on imprisonment or forced chakra extraction. 205 206 225
Abilities & Skills
Tailed Beast Chakra
Kurama possesses enormous chakra reserves that can be channeled through Naruto in increasingly powerful tailed states.
- Enhances Naruto's speed, strength, durability, and destructive capability through chakra cloaks. 30
- Its Three-Tails chakra breaks a Three-Way Seal and pierces its three users with chakra tails. 30
- Can allow Naruto to reach a four-tailed rampage, though the savage chakra burns Naruto's flesh and threatens his consciousness. 60 61
- Its chakra can be suppressed or controlled through the Eight Trigrams Seal; Naruto's access was initially limited to three tails while the seal remained strong. 5 58
- Full unsealing permits chakra to flow without the bodily harm associated with forcing it through the restrictive seal. 23
- Can cultivate and refine additional chakra, although Kurama considers Naruto's bodily endurance a more immediate limitation than its available reserves. 62
- Supports a controlled four-tailed cloak after Naruto achieves Perfect Jinchūriki cooperation. 79 142
- Its chakra cloak can form multiple arms for simultaneous attacks, including nine arms each carrying a Rasengan against Itachi. 183
- Can be divided through the Sage of Six Paths' Tailed Beast Splitting Technique, creating nine powerful Nine Masked Beasts that can act separately before returning to a unified form. 225
Physical Manifestation
Once released, Kurama can appear in its complete giant fox form rather than only as chakra leaking through Naruto.
- Regains its full physical body when Naruto completely breaks the seal. 77
- Can voluntarily withdraw and return to Naruto after appearing outside the seal. 78
- Forms a colossal armored fox when merged with Naruto's Susanoo. 183 205
- In its armored form, it can wield a Susanoo blade, overpower another complete Susanoo, and support chakra extraction through Naruto's Rinnegan-enhanced weapon. 183 205
- Later operates independently as Naruto's summoned beast after the Yang Nine-Tails is released from Naruto's body. 225
Tailed Beast Bomb
Kurama can compress chakra into devastating black Tailed Beast Bombs.
- Minato repeatedly teleports its bombs away during the original attack on Konoha. 1
- A four-tailed Naruto forms a bomb that tears a massive trench through the Grass ninja camp. 61
- Naruto combines Nine-Tails chakra, Susanoo, sage chakra, and Yang Release into a Tailed Beast Bomb Shuriken capable of breaking Hashirama's suppression techniques. 155
- In its golden physical form, Kurama destroys Shukaku's Air Drill Bullet with a Tailed Beast Bomb. 205
- Kurama can physically interrupt an opponent's Tailed Beast Bomb formation, batting Shukaku's gathering chakra sphere back into his face. 205
- After the Nine Masked Beasts recombine, Kurama erases the remains of Kusagakure with a Tailed Beast Bomb. 225
- While fighting beside Naruto against Madara, Kurama's Tailed Beast Bomb counters Madara's Wood Release. 241
Host Cooperation
Kurama's partnership with Naruto allows power to be used without the loss of identity normally associated with a Jinchūriki rampage.
- It deliberately retracts leaking chakra to improve Naruto's chakra control. 5
- Naruto can willingly surrender control to Kurama in an emergency, as during the Root pursuit. 30
- Supplies chakra to assist Naruto's transplantation of Shisui's Sharingan. 34
- Can help gather the faint remnants of the Ten-Tails' will in its chakra so Naruto remains conscious; Naruto can also separate and suppress the savage chakra with his own. 61
- Kurama and Naruto coordinate the Tailed Beast Cloak while Naruto retains full control of his own mind. 79
- Their cooperation later supports Sage Art: Nine-Tails Chakra Mode and Susanoo-armored transformations. 152 183
- Naruto ultimately releases Kurama from his body without ending their alliance, allowing the Yang Nine-Tails to serve him through a summoned-beast relationship. 225
- Their alliance continues after Naruto gains Six Paths power: Kurama fights beside him against Madara, who cannot summon the Yang half away. 241 242
Perception and Knowledge
- Can sense malicious intent in a person's heart, allowing it to distinguish Naruto's sincere companionship from hostile or exploitative approaches. 5
- Understands the restrictions of Naruto's Eight Trigrams Seal and the need for its key to establish unrestricted Perfect Jinchūriki cooperation. 5
- Recognizes the distinction between Gaara's psychological instability and genuine possession by Shukaku. 142
Relationships
- Naruto Uzumaki — Jinchūriki, friend, and combat partner. Naruto's years of sincere conversation gradually overcome Kurama's hostility, resulting in Perfect Jinchūriki cooperation. Naruto later frees the Yang Nine-Tails and retains Kurama as a summoned beast. 5 79 225
- Mito Uzumaki — Former host who confined and suppressed Kurama after its conflict involving Hashirama and Madara. The Mito encountered in the alternate world hosts that world's separate Nine-Tails, not Naruto's Yang partner. 5 189
- Kushina Uzumaki — Former host who restrains Kurama during the Nine-Tails attack. Kurama later acknowledges her as a good mother while criticizing Minato. 1 77
- Minato Namikaze — Naruto's father and one of Kurama's sealers. Kurama supports Naruto's condemnation of Minato's choices and openly mocks him. 3 75
- Obito Uchiha — Former Sharingan controller and enemy. Kurama refuses to obey him when Obito attempts to trigger another rampage. Obito later absorbs the separate Yin half into the Ten-Tails rather than capturing Naruto's Yang partner. 1 74 242
- Hashirama Senju — Former captor who subdued Kurama and treated it as Konoha's “pet.” Kurama retains resentment toward his history of being controlled. 3 5
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Konoha leader whom Kurama publicly humiliates after its full release by spitting on him. 77
- Itachi Uchiha — Opponent who interrupts Kurama's Three-Tails attack on Root. Kurama later supports Naruto against Itachi's complete Susanoo in an armored fox manifestation. 30 183
- Shukaku — Rival Tailed Beast. Their conflict escalates from mutual insults to Kurama overwhelming Shukaku in Armored Susanoo: Beast's Calamity. 143 205
- The alternate world's Nine-Tails — A distinct Nine-Tails with no direct identity connection to Kurama. Kurama accompanies Naruto in pursuing its capture but remains emotionally separate from it. Naruto absorbs its chakra after Mito's death. 189 205 206 211
- Yin Nine-Tails — The independent Yin half sealed within Minato after the original division of the Nine-Tails. Unlike Kurama's Yang half, it is forcibly released and subjugated by Naruto before being left to Obito's Ten-Tails revival plan. Obito absorbs it into the Ten-Tails, which later becomes sealed within Madara. 206 239 242 246
- Madara Uchiha — Former controller who forced Kurama into a summoning contract. In their later confrontation, Madara cannot summon Kurama's Yang half away from Naruto. His subsequent transformation into the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki involves the separate Yin half already absorbed into that beast. 5 242 246

“A perfect jinchuriki—there's no such thing as something so simple.” 5
“Figure out how to toughen yourself up first. The little chakra I have right now is enough for you to use for quite a while. If there were more, could that little body of yours even withstand it?” 62
“What does that have to do with me? You said it yourself—the Nine-Tails of this world has nothing to do with me!” 189
