Background

Sasuke was deeply attached to his older brother, Itachi. Naruto repeatedly intruded on their time together, called Sasuke “Second Pillar,” and beat him in deliberately one-sided spars to force his Sharingan to develop faster. Itachi recognized that Naruto was holding back and reframed the humiliations as the value of having a rival worth pursuing. 10

Fugaku named Sasuke after Sarutobi Sasuke, Hiruzen Sarutobi’s father. Naruto interprets this choice as evidence of Fugaku’s attachment to the Will of Fire. 65

Sasuke entered the Ninja Academy among the heirs of Konoha’s prominent clans. Already known for mastering the Uchiha Clan’s Fireball Jutsu, he attracted considerable attention from the other children. 14

Despite their rivalry, Sasuke joined Naruto’s friends in welcoming him home after his three-month hospitalization following the Nine-Tails incident. His aloof manner did not prevent him from participating in the reunion. 33

During the Uchiha crisis, Sasuke arrived at the clan grounds to find corpses and destruction everywhere, then witnessed Itachi fighting their father, Fugaku. The massacre left him isolated, publicly blamed as “the murderer’s little brother,” and targeted by other children despite his inheritance of Fugaku’s estate. 77 81

His surviving clansmen’s treatment helped stabilize his One-Tomoe Sharingan, but also deepened the resentment and pride that shaped his reputation as a prodigy. 91 When Naruto took possession of Fugaku’s Sharingan, Sasuke repeatedly confronted him over the eyes; Naruto later claimed that Fugaku had entrusted them to him and asked him to guide Sasuke’s revenge. 68 99

Naruto later gave Sasuke a selective, self-serving account of the massacre, portraying Fugaku’s surrender of his eyes as a sacrifice made to secure Sasuke’s safety and directing Sasuke’s anger toward Konoha’s leaders. Sasuke accepted the account without knowing what Naruto had withheld about Itachi’s efforts to protect him. 136

Sasuke is later identified as the current reincarnation of Indra. Madara regards him as a valuable hostage and vessel for Uchiha-derived power, while Hagoromo considers him crucial to opposing Madara’s return and restoring the balance between Indra and Asura’s successors. 241 247

Personality

Sasuke is proud, volatile, and intensely sensitive to the gap between his own strength and Itachi’s. Humiliation at Naruto’s hands regularly turns into renewed determination, even when he knows he is badly outmatched. 10 99 111

His fixation on revenge is partly a self-imposed identity. On his Team 7 registration form, he lists “train, take walks, play Guojji” as his dream; Naruto interprets this as evidence that Sasuke still wants an ordinary life beneath his cold façade. 98

His continued enjoyment of games introduced by Naruto likewise reveals a childish side beneath his intimidating reputation and inflated pride. 91

He is highly driven in training, spending nearly all his time practicing Sage Mode after receiving Orochimaru’s curse mark. However, this ambition also makes him vulnerable to manipulation by Naruto, Itachi, and Orochimaru. 124 126 135

Although Sasuke initially accepts Naruto’s role as a powerful guide, Orochimaru’s account of Naruto’s role in the Uchiha tragedy causes him to question Naruto’s motives. His preserved hatred of Itachi ultimately turns into hostility toward Naruto and Akatsuki Village, leading to his defection. 170 180

Naruto’s account of Fugaku’s final actions also changes Sasuke’s feelings toward his father. Grief and guilt displace his belief that Fugaku cared only for Itachi, though Sasuke’s attachment to his older brother remains difficult to break. 136

The possibility of resurrecting his parents, Itachi, and the Uchiha Clan later becomes a powerful motivation. Although he cooperates with Obito to pursue this hope, he demands confirmation that Rinne Rebirth can accomplish it and questions Obito’s increasingly unstable behavior. 234

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Sasuke’s Uchiha dōjutsu grants him enhanced perception, movement-reading, and the ability to learn from observed techniques.

  • Tracks hidden threats and identifies a transformed impostor posing as Naruto during the Chūnin Exams. 123
  • Uses enhanced vision to reproduce Itachi’s shuriken techniques with far greater precision than before. 101
  • Cannot follow Naruto’s Body Flicker despite activating the Sharingan, emphasizing the large gap between them. 100 101
  • After his Two-Tomoe awakening, Naruto directs him to observe the ongoing battle and copy the combatants’ taijutsu. 111
  • Awakens Three-Tomoe Sharingan after hearing Naruto’s account of Fugaku’s sacrifice, but does not awaken Mangekyō Sharingan after learning of Itachi’s death. 136 167 185
  • Confirms that he still has not awakened Mangekyō Sharingan during the events at the Rōran Ruins. 214
  • Later awakens Mangekyō Sharingan and is able to use it effectively in Obito’s operations. 234
  • Incapacitates Han with a surprise Mangekyō-assisted attack inside Kamui’s dimension; the specific ocular technique used is not identified. 234
  • Loses his Mangekyō Sharingan when Naruto removes both eyes through Yomotsu Hirasaka. 242
  • Receives a pair of Rinnegan from Hagoromo in the Pure Land. 247

Fire Release and Shurikenjutsu

Sasuke is a capable Fire Release user and an exceptionally precise projectile fighter.

  • Uses Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu to kill the Demon Brothers. 103
  • Combines Karin’s sensory calls with curved kunai and shuriken trajectories to pressure Zabuza through dense mist. 108
  • Compresses a Fireball into a smaller, more penetrating attack capable of destroying one of Orochimaru’s giant snakes and severely damaging another. 123
  • His improved chakra control allows his Phoenix Sage Flower and Fireball techniques to carry far greater force than his earlier attacks. 123
  • Combines Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson and concealed shuriken with Karin’s wave manipulation and Adamantine Sealing Chains to defeat one of Naruto’s Shadow Clones during joint training. 115

Rasengan

Naruto teaches Sasuke the Rasengan after he proves unable to use Chidori.

  • Masters the Rasengan in roughly half a month with Sharingan-assisted learning. 124
  • Lands a direct Rasengan on Orochimaru, destroying his current body. 123 124
  • The technique does not defeat Orochimaru permanently; Orochimaru sheds the damaged body and restrains Sasuke with Immobilization Jutsu. 124

Curse Mark and Sage Chakra Training

Orochimaru brands Sasuke with a curse mark while evaluating him as a potential vessel. 125

  • Curse Mark Stage One provides a major burst in physical ability and chakra. 126
  • Its power comes from unstable natural-energy absorption and threatens to erode his sanity and lifespan. 126
  • Sasuke later isolates himself to practice integrating Sage Chakra, though his successful mastery of Sage Mode is not confirmed. 135
  • Naruto believes Sasuke’s Sage of Six Paths lineage gives him the potential to balance the curse mark’s natural energy and develop Jūgo-style Sage Mode without relying on one of the three sacred lands. 126

Combat Judgment and Mental Conditioning

Naruto’s training makes Sasuke more cautious about disguises and more capable of acting under pressure.

  • Quickly recognizes the deception when an apparent Naruto emerges during the Forest of Death confrontation and attacks rather than accepting the disguise at face value. 123
  • Resists Orochimaru’s Hell Viewing Technique and maintains enough composure under his killing intent to counterattack. 123
  • Applies fine chakra control learned through tree-climbing and water-walking training to strengthen his techniques while improving their efficiency. 123

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Rival, instructor, manipulator, and eventual enemy. Naruto deliberately cultivates Sasuke’s power for future access to his eyes, but also trains him, protects him from ANBU custody, and positions himself as his mentor. Sasuke later learns enough of Naruto’s role in the Uchiha tragedy to defect from Akatsuki Village, and Naruto ultimately steals Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Naruto had also prepared an unused backup plan to force Sasuke’s awakening through repeated, altered experiences of Itachi’s life within Infinite Tsukuyomi. 10 99 123 135 170 180 235 242
  • Itachi Uchiha — Older brother and central target of Sasuke’s revenge. Itachi’s Tsukuyomi forces Sasuke’s Two-Tomoe awakening, while news of Itachi’s death leaves Sasuke emotionally hollow rather than awakening Mangekyō Sharingan. Itachi later breaks free of Naruto’s influence and confronts him over his intention to take Sasuke’s eyes. Before his death, Itachi surrenders his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan after Naruto promises not to harm Sasuke and to give him new eyes. 110 111 182 184 185
  • Fugaku Uchiha — Father. Sasuke’s anger toward Naruto centers partly on Fugaku’s Sharingan; Naruto claims Fugaku entrusted those eyes to him before his death. Naruto’s later account of Fugaku sacrificing his eyes for Sasuke leaves Sasuke grieving and triggers his Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 68 99 136
  • Karin Uzumaki — Team 7 teammate. She restrains Sasuke with Adamantine Sealing Chains and later supports his combat with Kagura’s Mind’s Eye. Their coordination improves enough for them to defeat one of Naruto’s Shadow Clones together. 98 108 115
  • Sakura Haruno — Team 7 teammate. Sasuke’s decisive killing of the Demon Brothers shocks her into fainting during their first serious mission. She is later removed from the team preparing for the Chūnin Exams. 98 103 115
  • Kurenai Yūhi — Team 7’s formal supervising jōnin; she validates Naruto’s unusual position as an additional supervising genin. 99
  • Kakashi Hatake — Protects Sasuke after Itachi’s Tsukuyomi by catching his unconscious body and confronting Itachi over the attack. He also protests Naruto’s rough treatment of Sasuke immediately afterward. 110 111
  • Orochimaru — Sees Sasuke as a desirable vessel because of his Sharingan and talent. He gives Sasuke the curse mark, exploits his need for strength, and later draws him away from Naruto by exposing Naruto’s possible complicity in the Uchiha massacre. 124 125 170 185
  • Obito Uchiha — Approaches Sasuke after his failure to awaken Mangekyō Sharingan, offering him an “ideal world” and later guiding him after his Mangekyō awakening. Obito also tells Sasuke that Rinne Rebirth could restore the Uchiha Clan. His assistance secretly serves Black Zetsu’s plan to deliver Sasuke’s awakened eyes to Naruto. 214 234 235
  • Black Zetsu — Secretly directs Obito to help Sasuke awaken Mangekyō Sharingan and arrange for the eyes to reach Naruto. He treats Sasuke’s ocular development as leverage for persuading Naruto to participate in the Ten-Tails revival plan. 235
  • Madara Uchiha — Captures Sasuke as Indra’s reincarnation and uses him to challenge Naruto, only for Naruto to remove Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan while he is unconscious. 241 242
  • Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki — Restores Sasuke’s ocular power in the Pure Land, grants him Rinnegan, and entrusts him with a mission that may offer a path to restoring the Uchiha Clan. 247

Story Role / Major Arcs

Naruto’s Rivalry and the Uchiha Massacre

Naruto repeatedly defeats Sasuke to accelerate his Sharingan development, treating him as a future source of Mangekyō and Rinnegan power rather than merely a rival. 10 The Uchiha massacre then destroys Sasuke’s family life and establishes Itachi as the focus of his vengeance. 77 81

Before the massacre, Sasuke continues challenging Naruto, but Naruto refuses to fight him until he graduates and becomes a ninja. This dismissal reinforces Sasuke’s frustration at falling behind his rival. 63

Itachi secures Obito’s agreement to spare Sasuke during their preparations for the massacre. Nevertheless, when Sasuke reaches the clan grounds and tries to interrupt Itachi’s battle with Fugaku, Itachi thrusts his blade toward him. Another figure intervenes, and Fugaku shields that figure; the blade pierces both and stops just short of Sasuke’s forehead. 70 77

Itachi subjects Sasuke to repeated visions of their parents’ deaths during the massacre in an attempt to force his Sharingan to evolve. Sasuke awakens only One-Tomoe Sharingan and collapses under the ordeal. 78

Afterward, Itachi infiltrates Root in disguise and threatens to expose Konoha’s crimes to enemy nations if Danzo harms Sasuke. Sasuke remains unaware of this protection when Naruto later recounts the massacre to him. 81 136

Team 7

Sasuke is assigned to Team 7 with Sakura and Karin. Naruto serves as an additional supervising genin while Kurenai is the team’s official jōnin leader. Sasuke initially rejects Naruto’s authority, but Naruto establishes control through overwhelming force and claims responsibility for helping him pursue revenge. 98 99

Land of Waves Mission

Sasuke kills the Demon Brothers with Great Fireball Jutsu but is reprimanded for eliminating potential intelligence sources. 103 Against Zabuza, he and Karin form an effective sensory-and-shuriken partnership, using Kagura’s Mind’s Eye to turn Zabuza’s own mist into a disadvantage. 108

Itachi’s arrival becomes another forced lesson. Sasuke attacks him despite exhaustion, suffers Tsukuyomi, and awakens Two-Tomoe Sharingan in both eyes after Naruto forces him back to consciousness. 110 111

Naruto had deliberately arranged Itachi’s presence to accelerate Sasuke’s development. After Sasuke despairs over the difference between their abilities, Naruto shows him his newly evolved eyes and redirects his renewed determination toward studying the surrounding fighters. 110 111

During subsequent training, Sasuke and Karin coordinate their techniques well enough to defeat one of Naruto’s Shadow Clones, although Naruto had deliberately held back. 115

Chūnin Exams and Orochimaru’s Mark

In the Forest of Death, Sasuke identifies a fake Naruto, fights Orochimaru, and surprises him with a Rasengan. Orochimaru survives, immobilizes him, and gives him a curse mark. 123 125 Sasuke’s attempt to draw on its power gives him a temporary physical surge but exposes the instability of his natural-energy control. 126

Naruto observes much of the confrontation without immediately intervening and ultimately permits Orochimaru to apply the mark. Sasuke is left confused by Naruto’s revealed connections to Akatsuki and the hidden arrangements between his instructor and Orochimaru. 124 125

Afterward, Sasuke isolates himself to pursue Sage Chakra training, treating mastery of senjutsu as another possible route to the strength needed to kill Itachi. Naruto later protects him from ANBU detention when the Sarutobi Clan massacre makes Sasuke politically useful as a hostage and suspect. 135

Naruto then tells Sasuke that Fugaku surrendered his eyes to secure Sasuke’s protection and presents Itachi’s actions as the product of Konoha’s leadership. The account omits Itachi’s efforts on Sasuke’s behalf. Overwhelmed by grief for Fugaku, Sasuke awakens Three-Tomoe Sharingan and vows revenge against Konoha’s leaders. 136

Defection and Itachi’s Death

Sasuke eventually defects from Akatsuki Village because the hatred Naruto deliberately preserved for Itachi becomes hostility toward Naruto and the village sheltering Uchiha forces. 180 Orochimaru intensifies Sasuke’s doubts by claiming that Naruto knowingly allowed the Uchiha massacre in order to weaken Hiruzen’s political foundation and remove dangerous Uchiha opponents. 170

Naruto responds to the defection by ordering Black Zetsu to notify Pain and have Sasuke retrieved. He recognizes that maintaining Sasuke’s hatred of Itachi has undermined his own plans. 180

Before his final defeat, Itachi confronts Naruto specifically over Sasuke’s safety and the planned appropriation of his eyes. Naruto admits that his earlier scheme depended on Itachi dying in a staged revenge confrontation so Sasuke would awaken Mangekyō Sharingan, allowing Naruto to obtain both brothers’ eyes. Sasuke’s defection and Itachi’s escape from Kotoamatsukami disrupt that arrangement. 182

After Orochimaru reveals that Naruto has transplanted Itachi’s eyes, Sasuke learns that Naruto killed Itachi and collapses; the shock still fails to awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan. 185 His inability to awaken the Mangekyō remains apparent during the Dragon Vein incident, making him increasingly susceptible to Obito’s promises of an ideal world and the Uchiha Clan’s restoration. 214

Mangekyō Awakening and Loss

Under Obito’s influence, Sasuke finally awakens Mangekyō Sharingan and quickly becomes capable of using it in combat. His immediate objective is the Rinne Rebirth technique and the possibility of restoring the Uchiha Clan. While waiting in Obito’s Kamui space, he uses the Mangekyō in a surprise attack that incapacitates the Five-Tails’ jinchūriki, Han. 234

Obito reinforces Sasuke’s hopes by claiming that mastering the Rinnegan and becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki could restore his parents, Itachi, and the clan. Sasuke nevertheless questions Obito’s condition after the masked man returns from his failed attack on Killer B, provoking an angry response. 234

Black Zetsu later reveals that he had instructed Obito to help Sasuke awaken his eyes and arrange their delivery to Naruto. Naruto orders Sasuke brought to him once the awakening is confirmed. This makes unnecessary Naruto’s backup plan to place Sasuke in Infinite Tsukuyomi, repeatedly recreate the original course of Itachi’s life, and alter those experiences until Sasuke’s emotions triggered the desired awakening. 235

Madara later captures Sasuke as Indra’s reincarnation and uses him to provoke Naruto. While Sasuke is unconscious, Naruto uses Yomotsu Hirasaka to remove and claim both of Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan, treating the eyes as the true prize of their conflict. 241 242

Obito attempts to reach Sasuke when he realizes what Naruto is doing, but is too late to prevent the theft. Naruto leaves the Yin half of Kurama behind and withdraws with the eyes. 242

Pure Land and Rinnegan

After Sasuke’s Mangekyō is stolen and the Ten-Tails’ revival threatens the world, Hagoromo intervenes in the Pure Land. He restores Sasuke with a pair of Rinnegan and assigns him a mission connected to stopping Madara and the possible revival of the Uchiha Clan. 247
