Background

Before his Martial Soul awakening, Tang San secretly cultivated the Mysterious Heaven Technique and the Purple Demon Eyes at sunrise. Jiede discovered his routine and offered access to the Basic Soul Beast Compendium in exchange for instruction. Tang San agreed, but protected Tang Sect secrets by teaching only the Mysterious Heaven Technique’s physical movements and giving false instructions for the Purple Demon Eyes. He nevertheless memorized the compendium’s contents. 1 2

After learning from Old Jack that Jiede possessed a Ten-Year Brittle Bamboo, Tang San secretly cut down and absorbed the soul beast’s ring. The absorption broke the Mysterious Heaven Technique’s bottleneck before his Martial Soul awakening. 3 4

At Holy Soul Village’s awakening ceremony, Tang San revealed only Blue Silver Grass while concealing his Clear Sky Hammer. He tested at Innate Full Soul Power, but Su Yuntao dismissed Blue Silver Grass as useless. 4

Tang Hao initially rejected Tang San’s ambition to become a Soul Master because of Blue Silver Grass. His attitude changed immediately when Tang San revealed the Clear Sky Hammer; Tang Hao instructed him to use the hammer to protect the grass. 6

Personality

Tang San is guarded, secretive, and protective of information he considers valuable. He withholds Tang Sect methods from Jiede, hides both his Clear Sky Hammer and pre-awakening Soul Ring, and prepares concealed weapons when he believes he is threatened. 2 4 7 8

He is deeply dependent on the approval of Tang Hao and quickly becomes devoted to Yu Xiaogang after the latter correctly identifies his Twin Martial Souls. This loyalty makes him defensive when others criticize either man. 6 8 16

His pride and competitiveness are especially visible in his rivalry with Jiede. Although Tang San recognizes that his own reckless Soul Ring absorption was a mistake, he redirects much of his resentment toward Jiede and resolves to surpass him. 9 18

Abilities & Skills

Mysterious Heaven Technique

A Tang Sect cultivation method Tang San practiced before awakening a Martial Soul.

  • Its bottleneck was broken when he absorbed the Brittle Bamboo Soul Ring before awakening. 3 4
  • Tang San considers it a Tang Sect secret and deliberately withheld its mental formula from Jiede. 1 2
  • Its soul power enabled him to absorb a Soul Ring and advance before the normal awakening process. 3 4

Purple Demon Eyes

A spiritual-eye technique cultivated by absorbing purple qi at sunrise.

  • Allows Tang San to perceive targets clearly in darkness, including identifying the Brittle Bamboo as a Soul Beast. 2 3
  • Tang San falsely told Jiede that merely staring and blinking at the sun was sufficient to cultivate it. 2

Tang Sect Combat Techniques

Tang San uses several close-combat techniques derived from Tang Sect training.

  • Mysterious Jade Hands — used to meet Wang Sheng’s claw attacks directly. 17
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — a footwork technique used for rapid evasion and repositioning. 4 17
  • Crane Control, Dragon Seize — generates a pulling force to draw an opponent toward him. 17
  • Hidden weapons — keeps concealed weapons ready, including a Silent Sleeve Arrow. 8 16

Blue Silver Grass

Tang San’s revealed Martial Soul and the recipient of his first two Soul Rings.

  • Blue Silver Entanglement — first Soul Skill obtained from the Ten-Year Brittle Bamboo; rapidly produces vines to restrain a target. 5
    • The vines are brittle enough to be snapped or broken with little force. 5 9 17
  • Mandrake Snake venom ability — gained from his second Soul Ring; Blue Silver Grass can release snake venom and absorb venom to detoxify it. 26

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang San’s concealed second Martial Soul.

  • Tang Hao regards it as the Martial Soul Tang San should use to protect his Blue Silver Grass. 6
  • Tang San could summon it after awakening, but initially lacked sufficient remaining soul power to form a Soul Ring for it. 5
  • Its existence was revealed to Yu Xiaogang after Tang San became his disciple. 8

Relationships

  • Jiede — Former bargaining partner turned irreconcilable rival. Tang San deceived him during their exchange over the Basic Soul Beast Compendium, later stole Jiede’s Brittle Bamboo, and blames him for the humiliation caused by its weak Soul Ring. 1 2 3 9 27
  • Tang Hao — Father. Tang San seeks his approval despite Tang Hao’s cold treatment of his Blue Silver Grass; Tang Hao becomes affectionate only after seeing the Clear Sky Hammer. 6 7 9
  • Old Jack — Village elder and longtime benefactor to Tang San’s household, providing food and arranging academy opportunities. Tang San remains grateful to him. 3 6 7 16
  • Yu Xiaogang — Master. Tang San immediately accepts him after Yu Xiaogang identifies his Twin Martial Souls and later risks his life to save him from Mandrake Snake venom. 8 26
  • Xiao Wu — Fellow work-study student and early combat rival. Their first dormitory fight ends in a draw, and they later continue bickering over Tang San’s first Soul Skill. 9 15
  • Wang Sheng — Classmate and opponent. Tang San defeats him after using Blue Silver Entanglement, though Wang Sheng forces him to reveal the weakness of his first Soul Skill publicly. 17

Story Role / Major Arcs

Notting Academy Conflict

At Notting Academy, Tang San became Yu Xiaogang’s disciple after the latter correctly guessed that he possessed Twin Martial Souls. Yu Xiaogang soon exposed Tang San’s first ring as a weak Ten-Year Brittle Bamboo ring rather than the “Green Bamboo” Tang San claimed it was, leading to Tang Hao’s punishment and Tang San’s growing hostility toward Jiede. 8 9

When Yu Xiaogang tried to pressure Jiede into becoming a disciple, Tang San defended his master and challenged Jiede. Wang Sheng fought in Jiede’s place; Tang San won, but only after Yu Xiaogang shouted a warning and Tang San used Blue Silver Entanglement. 16 17

Second Soul Ring Hunt

While hunting for Tang San’s second Soul Ring, Yu Xiaogang was poisoned by a 900-year Mandrake Snake. With ordinary antidotes ineffective, Tang San absorbed the snake’s Soul Ring despite it exceeding the normal limit, then used his new venom-related ability to cure Yu Xiaogang. 26
