Background
Dragonkind occupies Dragon Island, a landmass comparable to a small continent and containing mountains, plains, forests, rivers, lakes, volcanoes, and snowfields. Dragons select habitats suited to their individual needs rather than living in a single uniform environment. 207
The Magic Goddess was involved in Dragonkind’s early magical history. She taught Leviathan, the first dragon to use Dragon Tongue Magic, and created the Sacred Dragon as a magical creature intended to teach Dragonkind magic. 207 208
Dragonkind’s present political system arose after wars between dragon breeds nearly drove them to extinction. The Elder Council was established to prevent further internal slaughter; it began with seven dragons in a large cave and expanded into the hollowed mountain settlement that now serves as its center of government. 208
For much of their history, dragons remained technologically stagnant because their natural power made change unnecessary. Dragon Island consequently remained largely primitive and self-sufficient despite being inhabited by the continent’s strongest mortal race. 208 408
Appearance
Dragons are immense, winged magical creatures with considerable variation between breeds and individuals. Observed dragons include black, silver-white Frost, green, blue, and golden dragons. 207 215 241 257
- Adult dragons are at least High-Rank Transcendents; a dragon with notable talent can reach the Legendary level. 346
- A Frost Dragon was shown wearing a customized Magic Net Ring set into a gemstone necklace. 206
- Dragon Island’s dragons occupy habitats ranging from snowy mountains and volcanoes to forests, rivers, and open plains. 207
Biology
| Trait | Details |
|---|---|
| Lifespan | Dragons normally live about 800 years. Dragons older than 1,000 years are Ancient Dragons; those over 1,500 are Elder Dragons; those over 1,800 are Primordial Dragons. Few live beyond 2,000 years. 206 |
| Reproduction | A dragon generally requires 300–500 years to produce an egg and can produce no more than three in a lifetime. 208 |
| Hatchling survival | Eggs may fail to hatch, and the extreme size difference between adults and hatchlings contributes to accidental hatchling deaths. 208 |
| Population pressure | Dragonkind’s low birth rate and high hatchling mortality are among the Elder Council’s greatest long-term concerns. 208 |
| Diet | Dragons can hunt enormous prey; one Green Dragon was seen carrying an elephant to its mate incubating an egg. 241 |
Society and Governance
| Institution | Function |
|---|---|
| Elder Council | Composed of Dragonkind’s strongest members and holds final authority over Dragon Island. 207 |
| Governors | Powerful second-tier dragons appointed to administer the island and execute Elder Council decisions. 207 |
| Tribal Assembly | Represents Dragonkind’s different races and breeds. 207 |
| Dragonkind Elder Council settlement | A hollowed mountain containing communal flying spaces, glowing gemstone-lit caverns, and cave dwellings carved into its walls. 208 |
Dragons use a massive designated landing structure because their landings are considered reckless enough that those landing elsewhere can be punished. 207
Abilities & Skills
Natural Strength and Flight
Dragonkind is regarded as the strongest race in the mortal world. Adult dragons can cross the continent in roughly one day, slightly faster than Legendary Mages specialized in movement magic. 207 193
- Adult dragons possess at least High-Rank Transcendent strength. 346
- Talented dragons can become Legendary beings. 346
- Their speed made them suitable for continent-spanning courier work before faster transport infrastructure was available. 193
- Dragon flight remains inferior to direct spatial magic. 193
Dragon Tongue Magic
Dragon Tongue Magic is Dragonkind’s distinctive magical system, developed from Natural Runes found on Dragon Island and in the ocean. It had long remained largely inaccessible to other races because of limited contact between dragons and continental civilizations. 484
- Dragon-Speech Runes can gather and compress energy. 485
- Their principles are associated with the destructive power of dragonfire. 485
- Rost Academy researchers identified potential applications in weapons, restraints, energy storage, and Self-Charging Magic Arrays. 485
- Nidhogg eventually supplied the complete set of Dragon-Speech Runes to Rost Academy for study. 485
Commercial Deterrence
Dragonkind’s strength and treasure hoards became the basis for its commercial authority.
- Great Dragon Bank uses Dragonkind’s wealth and reputation as startup capital and proof of solvency. 210
- Loans are secured through collateral, contracts, and the threat posed by defaulting on a debt to dragons. 210
- Dragons handle high-value deliveries, appraisals, and protection for valuable goods, while other transport groups handle ordinary shipments. 210 215
Faith and Beliefs
Dragonkind has little traditional dependence on gods because dragons are powerful, long-lived, and rarely need divine protection. Nidhogg considered widespread forced conversion impossible, while Roger explicitly stated that Dragonkind would not be required to provide faith. 208 209
Only a small number of dragons imagined or revered a Dragon God; this belief was insufficient to create a true god capable of responding to them. 207
The Magic Web nevertheless led some dragons to pray to the Magic Goddess, prompting the Elder Council to suspect that Roger and the Magic Goddess had come to spread faith on Dragon Island. 207
Magitech Era
Adoption of the Magic Web
A faint Magic Energy Network signal was detected on Dragon Island before Dragonkind visibly appeared on the Magic Web, suggesting that the standard system was initially unsuitable or insufficient for dragons. 147
A Frost Dragon later appeared in Magic Web videos using Frost Breath. Its magic was only at the Advanced Mage level, but its physical body had reached the Legendary Realm. 192
After Dragonkind was given the opportunity to create and integrate its own content, hundreds of dragons began using the Magic Web. 193
Alliance with the Technology God
Roger and the Magic Goddess approached the Elder Council by offering a solution to Dragonkind’s reproduction crisis rather than demanding worship. The possibility of more young dragons persuaded the Council to cooperate with the Technology God’s plans. 208 210
Dragonkind agreed to contribute its treasure, speed, and reputation to a new commercial system in exchange for economic benefits and assistance with population growth. 210
Great Dragon Bank and Great Dragon Express
| Institution | Function |
|---|---|
| Great Dragon Bank | Accepts deposits, issues loans, records balances through the Magic Web, and allows withdrawals and transfers across branches. 210 225 |
| Great Dragon Express | Provides continent-wide transport, parcel tracking, and delivery for Magic Web purchases. 215 225 |
| Great Dragon Online Bank | Allows Magic Web users to check balances and interest, transfer funds, and make payments. 225 |
| Online auctions and shopping | Uses the bank for verified payments and Great Dragon Express for inspected, protected delivery. 215 225 |
Within ten days of a promotional banking campaign, Great Dragon Bank reached five million customers, held more than 620 million gold coins in deposits, and had issued approximately 450 million gold coins in loans. 257
Dragonkind later began preparing a continent-wide credit currency, Stock Exchange, Bond Market, and deeper integration between banknotes, Magic Web banking, and major corporations. 325
Dragon Island Development
Viscount Rost proposed a Dragon Island Development Company to prepare for future population growth. His plan called for selectively converting parts of the island into farmland and livestock farms while preserving other areas as wilderness. 408
Nidhogg did not immediately approve the proposal, but acknowledged that Dragonkind would need to adapt if the Technology God’s promised population growth materialized. 408
