"Kid, I'm a Nen user. If an ordinary person like you could tail me without me noticing, I might as well stop practicing Nen." Jack looked him up and down, then frowned when he saw his tattered dress-like clothes. "So you're a little girl." There were girls in Meteor City too, but unless they had been deliberately raised, they usually found it hard to survive.
So Jack was somewhat surprised to see Luo Ye.
After all, the difference in physical strength between girls and boys was far too great, and Meteor City was no place that respected the elderly or cared for children. The law here was survival of the fittest.
"Why are you following me?" Jack glanced at him, his tone vicious. "The medical kit on my back isn't carrying food!" If he wanted to rob him for food, then he was bound to be disappointed! He should be grateful he was still a child. Otherwise, Jack's Flame Bullets were no joke!
"I'm not here for food." Luo Ye pressed down on his stomach, which was growling from hunger, and swallowed hard. His eyes kept drifting toward the medical kit on Jack's back. "My brother is sick. He needs medicine."
Feitan's fever was too severe. Otherwise, Luo Ye would not have set his sights on the Elder Council's medicine. Unfortunately, once he saw that this man was a Nen user, he knew there was no chance.
He had not even unlocked his Zanpakutō's Shikai, and his Kido was not strong either. Even if he caught Jack off guard, he would not be able to hide from a Nen user's senses.
"Your brother is sick and needs medicine. What does that have to do with me?" Jack sneered. "This medicine is for the Elder Council. Your brother has nothing to do with me, so why should I be kind enough to give it to him?"
Luo Ye did not get angry at being scolded. "I know. I wasn't expecting you to give me any." In his previous life, saying that might have moved someone to kindness. But this was Meteor City, where everyone's first priority was keeping themselves alive. Kindness? What the hell was that?
Jack raised an eyebrow. "What, do you want to steal my medicine?" He gave Luo Ye a cruel once-over. "With those scrawny arms and legs of yours? You should be grateful I'm not dragging you off to sell you!"
The moment he said that, Luo Ye looked at him warily. He had been here for some time now, so of course he knew what Jack meant. There were certain beastly scumbags in Meteor City who loved playing with children, boys and girls alike. They were disgusting beyond belief. Scumbags existed every year, but Meteor City had especially many!
He had nearly been taken once himself. Fortunately, the system awakened and allowed him to escape, but the system had been severely injured because of it. He could only rely on himself now.
Otherwise, he would not have chosen to bet everything on Feitan. Many of the system's functions were damaged, and if he wanted to survive in Meteor City, where life-and-death chases played out every day, he had to find a partner.
"Relax, I can't be bothered with that sort of thing." Jack turned and walked away, his tone indifferent but unmistakably threatening. "But I'm warning you: if you follow me again, I can't promise I won't catch you and sell you."
A Nen user who did not even give him a chance to tail him was this cautious. It seemed he would not be able to steal the medicine, so Luo Ye could only test the waters. "Mister, can you give me a sip of water?" Water was scarce in Meteor City too, but it had rained not long ago. There was no clean water, but there was plenty of filthy water. Luo Ye asked because he had seen the large canteen at Jack's waist.
Nen users should drink clean water. He wanted to beg for some for Feitan and see whether he could pull through on his own. Without medicine, this was the only option.
