Background / History
Feitan was first found as a feverish, guarded child hiding in a shipping container in Meteor City. Luo Ye shared scarce food and later obtained clean water for him after unsuccessfully trying to acquire medicine. When Luo Ye demanded that he grow strong enough to repay the risk, Feitan promised to protect him. 1 4
After recovering, Feitan became Luo Ye's hunting partner. He killed a food thief who nearly overpowered Luo Ye, then reacted with hostility upon encountering Illumi Zoldyck. Luo Ye restrained him because Illumi's training and Nen made him too dangerous at the time. 5 6
Driven by the idea that strength determines survival in Meteor City, Feitan sought to learn Nen and awakened it simply by entering a Nen user's residual aura. He and Luo Ye subsequently seized a house, where Feitan killed the owner after Luo Ye restrained him with Kido. 6 7
He helped Machi awaken her Nen through Nen pressure, though he had little patience for teaching. Feitan initially proposed capturing and interrogating Illumi for Nen instruction, but accepted Luo Ye's more cautious plan to cooperate with him against Rasa, the District 11 governor. 9 12 13
During the conflict with Rasa, Feitan repeatedly protected Luo Ye: he intercepted Rasa's surprise dagger attack, later killed Rasa by stabbing him through the heart after Rasa injured Luo Ye, and remained at Luo Ye's bedside after the battle. 18 19 20
After Rasa's death, Feitan assisted in exploring the dangerous Nen-created house left behind by its deceased original owner. He protected Illumi from an arrow trap because Illumi still owed the group Nen training, investigated the house with Luo Ye, and became enraged when they found secretly taken photographs of him in a dress. 22 25 26
When Uvogin and Nobunaga attempted to seize the house, Feitan immediately defended Luo Ye's claim and attacked Nobunaga. He was briefly trapped between Nobunaga and Uvogin's attack before Machi intervened; afterward, he prevented Nobunaga from helping Uvogin against Luo Ye's Kido. 46 47
After the conflict with the house and the expansion of Luo Ye's allies, Feitan became increasingly hostile toward Chrollo and protective of Luo Ye's group. He objected to Chrollo probing Luo Ye for information and repeatedly tried to drive him away, although he eventually operated alongside Chrollo and the Phantom Troupe. 48 50 74 76
Feitan gradually developed romantic feelings for Luo Ye. He continued caring for him, bringing him food, protecting him, and prioritizing his wishes even after learning that Luo Ye was male. Luo Ye initially rejected his affection and urged him to find someone else, but Feitan continued pursuing him with increasing determination. 72 73 105 115 117
Feitan eventually left Meteor City on an extended search for Luo Ye after Luo Ye disappeared. His search became increasingly obsessive: he worked with Xiao Ai to use teleportation and dream-related abilities, imagined restraining Luo Ye so he could not escape, and completed hundreds of violent search sessions while declaring that he would bring Luo Ye back and keep him at his side. 145 147 155 168 178
He and the entire Phantom Troupe later registered for the Hunter Exam. Feitan joined primarily to find Luo Ye, while the rest of the Troupe followed out of curiosity, group loyalty, and a desire to observe or tease him. 178 222
At the exam, Feitan initially mistook Luo Ye for another person before realizing that Luo Ye was present and deliberately hiding from him. He confronted Byakuya Kuchiki, whom he believed to be Luo Ye's beloved rival, and fought him to a standstill. Their conflict repeatedly resumed because of Feitan's jealousy, although Feitan restrained himself whenever he feared Luo Ye would reject him or become angry. 185 186 189 190 204 215
Feitan continued protecting Luo Ye during the Hunter Exam, attacking anyone who injured or threatened him and obeying Luo Ye when ordered to stop. He eventually became openly gentle and accommodating around Luo Ye, agreeing to study computers because Luo Ye was interested in the subject and diving into dangerous waters to retrieve treasure for him. 242 289
His relationship with Luo Ye gradually became mutual and romantic. Their closeness was publicly emphasized when they left the Hunter Exam's tower holding hands, and Luo Ye later offered Feitan a ring capable of tracking and teleporting between them. Feitan warned that accepting it would mean Luo Ye could no longer escape him. 278 279 303
Appearance
Feitan is a small, thin black-haired boy with narrow golden eyes and a high collar that often conceals much of his expression. 1 6 27
- Black hair and narrow golden eyes. 1 6
- Male, despite Luo Ye's earlier feminine disguise causing him to mistake Luo Ye's gender. 115
- Noticeably short and extremely thin; Luo Ye compares tackling him to hitting a skeleton. 27
- Usually carries a sharp blade or dagger. 5 7
- Later fights with an umbrella concealing a weapon during the Hunter Exam. 190
- Frequently hides his face and embarrassment behind his high collar. 27 29
- Was reluctantly made to wear dresses during the plan to lure Rasa. 14 15
Personality
Feitan is aggressive, impatient, and intensely survival-driven. He prefers direct violence over elaborate plans, repeatedly suggesting forceful solutions such as confronting stronger opponents, interrogating Illumi, or destroying threats outright. 6 9 22 24
Despite his hostility, he is highly practical when an agreement or ally's value is involved. He awakened Machi's Nen at Luo Ye's request and saved Illumi from Rasa's trap specifically because Illumi still owed the group instruction. 9 22
His harsh exterior contrasts sharply with his treatment of Luo Ye. Feitan protects him instinctively, worries about his injuries, bandages him while he is unconscious, and resolves to become stronger so he can protect him more reliably. He becomes embarrassed when Luo Ye praises or teases him and reacts jealously to Illumi receiving Luo Ye's attention. 18 20 21 28 29 35 37
Feitan is unusually considerate toward Luo Ye, often expressing affection through practical acts rather than words. He brings Luo Ye food, offers to obtain anything he wants, agrees to study subjects he does not understand, and repeatedly sacrifices his own convenience to protect or assist him. 72 73 289
His attachment eventually develops into intense romantic devotion. He becomes jealous of Byakuya Kuchiki and Hisoka, interprets Luo Ye's protective actions as evidence of affection, and is willing to restrain his violence when he believes killing or humiliating someone would cause Luo Ye to reject him. 145 190 215 230 303
Feitan remains volatile and capable of extreme violence, but Luo Ye is one of the few people able to control him. He generally obeys Luo Ye's direct orders, even when he is furious, and his concern for Luo Ye can override his pride, impatience, and desire for revenge. 219 229 234 301
Abilities & Skills
Nen
Feitan possesses exceptional natural Nen talent, awakening his aura without formal instruction and progressing rapidly afterward. 6 17
- Can release Nen pressure strongly enough to challenge and surprise Illumi. 11
- Awakened Machi's Nen by subjecting her to Nen pressure. 9
- Received Nen training from Illumi after the group killed Rasa. 13 21
- His Nen development initially exceeded Machi's, who was unable to withstand his killing intent. 17
- Possesses a destructive flame-based Nen technique, described as a massive exploding fireball. 103
- Later manifested blue-white flames whose sensation matched Luo Ye's power, although the circumstances behind this variation are not explained. 103
- Can suppress or withhold lethal techniques when Luo Ye's safety or wishes require it. He stated that Hisoka would have been killed or severely maimed had he used his strongest move. 146 148
Speed and Close-Quarters Combat
Feitan is a fast, lethal close-range fighter who favors throat strikes and rapid interception. 5 18 46
- Circled behind an enemy and slit his throat while Luo Ye distracted him. 5
- Intercepted Rasa's near-instant ambush on Luo Ye before Luo Ye could draw his weapon. 18
- Reached Rasa unnoticed while the latter was trapped in Black Coffin, then stabbed him through the heart. 19
- Launched a dagger strike at Nobunaga's throat quickly enough that Nobunaga barely blocked it. 46
- Avoids meeting overwhelming physical force head-on; Uvogin's attack forced him to retreat before Nobunaga blocked his escape. 46
- Defeated Hisoka in a later confrontation while deliberately avoiding a killing move. 145 146 148
- Fought Byakuya Kuchiki at comparable speed and skill during their initial Hunter Exam confrontation. 190
- Can overwhelm or intimidate ordinary Hunter Exam examiners through speed and close-range violence. 219 301
Combat Instincts
Feitan quickly assesses danger in battle, though his impatience can make him reckless. 17 18 24
- Recognized that Rasa's superior speed exceeded his own. 17
- Remained vigilant while Rasa watched the group from an inaccessible spatial hiding place. 18
- Accepted Luo Ye's condition to remain nearby during the underground investigation because of Luo Ye's injuries. 24
- Was stopped from using a large-scale move underground because it could have buried both him and Luo Ye beneath the house. 27
- Can recognize when continued violence would jeopardize his ability to remain with Luo Ye, allowing others to restrain him by threatening that connection. 219
- Quickly identifies and tracks members of the Phantom Troupe, including Omokage, through his familiarity with their habits and abilities. 228 229
Temporary Enhancement
Feitan's strength was temporarily amplified when Hisoka gave him a drop of a powerful substance from an external treasury. The enhancement allowed him to press Byakuya Kuchiki more aggressively and break through Xiao Ai's spatial barrier, but it was not established as a permanent part of Feitan's Nen. 198

- Tracking and teleportation ring — later offered to him by Luo Ye; the ring allows two-way positioning and teleportation between the pair. 279
Relationships
- Luo Ye — Initial alliance partner and later his closest companion and romantic partner. Feitan promised to protect him, repeatedly saves him in combat, and becomes openly protective, embarrassed, and possessive around him. He continued pursuing Luo Ye after an initial rejection, eventually receiving increasing emotional reciprocation, public hand-holding, and a ring linking their positions. 4 18 20 29 35 105 117 278 279 303
- Machi — Teammate whose Nen he helped awaken. He can be harsh toward her intuition, but fights alongside her and benefits from her thread-based support. He later relies on her intuition while searching for Luo Ye, even becoming frustrated when her ability is blocked. 9 17 19 47 185 186

- Rasa — Enemy and District 11 governor. Feitan killed him after Rasa wounded Luo Ye. 18 19
- Uvogin — Opponent in the dispute over the Nen house; Feitan recognizes that Uvogin's direct attack is too powerful to meet head-on. 44 46
- Nobunaga — Opponent whom Feitan attacked first during the house dispute, later keeping him from aiding Uvogin. 46 47
- Chrollo Lucilfer — Leader and uneasy ally whom Feitan treats with unusual hostility. Feitan rejects Chrollo's attempts to probe Luo Ye's group for information and often threatens him, but later cooperates with him as a member of the Phantom Troupe. 48 50 74 76 178
- Xiao Ai — A frequent accomplice and mediator in Feitan's search for Luo Ye. She developed teleportation and dream-related methods to help him locate Luo Ye, repeatedly teases him about Byakuya, and becomes strong enough to overpower him. Feitan's sincere thanks for her assistance surprised her. 145 147 155 179
- Byakuya Kuchiki — Feitan's principal romantic rival and a target of intense jealousy. Believing Byakuya to be the person Luo Ye loved, Feitan challenged him to repeated fights, initially matching him and later using an external enhancement to gain an advantage. 189 190 198 204 215
- Hisoka — Hostile fellow fighter and Luo Ye's long-term companion. Feitan has repeatedly fought him, eventually defeating him while holding back from a killing move. Their mutual hostility is intensified by Hisoka's provocations and Feitan's jealousy of Hisoka's closeness to Luo Ye. 145 148 262 265 303
- Omokage — Fellow Phantom Troupe member whom Feitan volunteered to track after Omokage attacked Gon. Feitan's familiarity with the Troupe made him a potentially effective pursuer, though Luo Ye prevented him from violating the group's internal rules. 228 229
- Hunter Association examiners — Feitan has little respect for their authority and threatened or assaulted them when they endangered or mistreated the examinees. He nevertheless restrained himself when Luo Ye explained that their cooperation was needed. 219 301
