Background / History

Hisoka developed Nen at an unusually young age despite growing up outside Meteor City. His early strength and talent attracted Luo Ye’s attention, while his fascination with combat made him constantly seek powerful opponents. He also grew up in considerable comfort, living in a luxurious villa with servants, although Luo Ye questions how this fits the story that he created Bungee Gum because he could not afford chewing gum 126 127.

His father, Rondo, was frequently absent while building his fortune. Hisoka resents that absence, even though Rondo’s financial support and later actions show that he cared about his son. Hisoka also retains unpleasant childhood memories of the amusement park, which Rondo repeatedly forced him to visit 132 142 174.

After meeting Luo Ye, Hisoka offers to obtain identification papers for him and invites him to stay at the villa. He chooses Luo Ye as a playmate because Luo Ye is both entertaining and durable enough to withstand his violent games 127 128. He uses theatrical behavior deliberately. His exaggerated speech, clown-like clothing, flirtatious gestures, and feigned helplessness are performances he can discard when they stop being useful 126 148. His playful manner often conceals careful observation and strategic planning.

Hisoka is manipulative and persistent. He provokes Luo Ye to fight, exaggerates injuries to receive attention, and uses Illumi to create jealousy between Luo Ye and Feitan. However, he is not completely reckless: he can cooperate when threatened with losing access to future opponents, and he recognizes when a dangerous situation has exceeded his ability to control it 126 149 311.

He is also possessive of Luo Ye’s attention. Although he calls Luo Ye his brother and treats their relationship as a source of teasing and rivalry, he becomes jealous when Luo Ye focuses on Feitan.
