Background / History

Illumi is the eldest son of the Zoldyck family, an established assassin clan that trains its children as killers. Unlike the self-taught children of Meteor City, he received formal Nen training and assassin conditioning from a young age. Luo Ye considers this upbringing the reason Illumi is currently stronger and more experienced than Feitan. 6 16

He was sent to Meteor City on a family assignment to assassinate Rasa, the chief of District 11. After determining that Rasa was too dangerous to eliminate alone at his current age, Illumi approached Luo Ye, Feitan, and Machi for a temporary alliance. 11 12

Illumi’s assignment was part of a three-target Zoldyck family trial. Rasa was the first target, while Owen of District 10 was the second. Illumi remained in Meteor City after Rasa’s death because completing the trial required him to pursue the remaining targets. 83 84

His Meteor City mission also served broader family goals. Illumi intended to strengthen the Zoldyck family’s influence, recruit capable future butlers, improve its supply of personnel, and discourage the mafia and Elder Council from exploiting the family. 83

He approaches cooperation as an exchange of value rather than an emotional commitment. He agrees to teach basic Nen because it costs him little, attempts to buy Luo Ye’s Dead Nen house for profit, and expects debts to be repaid when others save him. 13 22 32

Despite his cold demeanor, Illumi is still immature and can be petty or contrarian. Feitan’s open hostility encourages him to join Luo Ye’s group specifically because seeing Feitan unhappy amuses him. 40

Illumi’s apparent generosity usually conceals a personal benefit. His offer to kill Ellie’s suspected associate for free is partly motivated by his need to complete his own family trial, and he deliberately frames the favor so that Luo Ye’s group will owe him. 82 84

Encounter in Meteor City

Illumi first encounters Luo Ye and Feitan after they kill a man for food. He claims to be “just passing by” and avoids fighting because he does not want to do unpaid work; Luo Ye recognizes that Illumi’s Nen and Zoldyck training make him too dangerous to confront. 5 6

Alliance Against Rasa

Illumi approaches Luo Ye’s group with an offer to jointly assassinate Rasa, whose men had targeted Machi and the other girls. Luo Ye accepts in exchange for formal Nen instruction, and Illumi moves into their house to begin teaching them. 11 13

He helps develop the operation against Rasa by explaining the target’s habits and joining the plan to exploit Rasa’s obsession with young girls. He also removes Rasa’s alternative sources of victims, forcing Rasa to either act personally or send subordinates. 14 16

During Rasa’s ambush, Illumi attacks the spatial opening with needles and prevents Rasa from escaping unnoticed. He is later caught in Rasa’s spatial trap but survives due to Machi’s intervention. 18 19

Exploration of Rasa’s House

After Rasa’s death, Illumi remains with the group because he still owes them Nen training. He accompanies them into Rasa’s trap-filled residence, where Feitan saves him from a volley of arrows. Illumi accepts the debt despite Feitan’s claim that the rescue was only to preserve their agreement. 21 22

He assists in investigating the house’s hazards, including testing the vortex trap with nails. 23

Joining Luo Ye’s Group

Illumi becomes interested in Luo Ye’s group as a long-term investment, believing that recruiting Luo Ye will also secure Feitan and Machi for the Zoldyck family. Although Chrollo also invites him, Illumi chooses Luo Ye’s group because he distrusts Chrollo and sees a better opportunity to manipulate Luo Ye’s companions. 31 35 36

Machi’s intuition supports his admission, and Luo Ye formally welcomes him into the group. Illumi immediately intensifies his rivalry with Feitan by selecting a room next to Luo Ye’s. 39 40 41

Conflict with Chrollo’s Group

When Uvogin and Nobunaga attempt to seize Luo Ye’s Dead Nen house, Illumi does not participate in the initial battle. He supports Luo Ye’s later proposal to negotiate after Chrollo arrives, helping shift the conflict from combat to discussion. 45 48

Inside the house, Illumi contributes information about Rasa’s use of abducted girls and the house’s resources, helping explain how Rasa survived in isolation. 49

Owen, Ellie, and the Elder Council

Illumi reveals that Owen is his second target in a three-target Zoldyck family trial. He offers to kill Owen without charging Luo Ye’s group, but Feitan correctly suspects that the offer is motivated by Illumi’s own assignment. 82 84

Illumi identifies Ellie’s phantom as a manifestation connected to a ghost-commanding Nen ability and warns that her intangible forces may be more dangerous than Owen’s straightforward Enhancer abilities. 82 84

Hunter Exam and Mercenary Schemes

Illumi attends the Hunter Exam and continues operating as an independent assassin and paid contractor. Hisoka hires him for one hundred million Jenny to disrupt Luo Ye and Feitan’s relationship. Illumi accepts because the task carries financial reward and gives him another opportunity to interfere with Luo Ye, whom he considers a past assassination failure. 278

Luo Ye later invents a rumor that Hisoka intends to propose to Illumi. Illumi privately considers whether Hisoka could meet Zoldyck standards for a spouse, particularly because of Hisoka’s strength and wealth. 281

Impersonation of Byakuya Kuchiki

Illumi and Hisoka devise a plan to provoke Feitan by having Illumi impersonate Byakuya Kuchiki. Hisoka distracts Luo Ye and the others while Illumi approaches Feitan in disguise. 306

Feitan attacks the disguised Illumi immediately. Luo Ye realizes that the impostor cannot be Byakuya because he lacks a Zanpakutō and cannot reproduce its abilities. Illumi abandons the disguise after Luo Ye exposes him and confirms that Hisoka hired him. 307

The scheme fails to break up Luo Ye and Feitan and instead provokes Luo Ye into punishing Hisoka. Illumi then supplies Zoldyck medicine that rapidly heals Hisoka’s injuries. 308 311
