After the three of them swallowed the Devil Fruits that tasted vile beyond belief, Rogge suddenly laughed. "You have to eat the entire Devil Fruit to unlock all its abilities. The more you eat, the stronger the power you can unleash."
Jelly and Ham's faces turned incomparably ugly when they heard Rogge's words. Looking at the Devil Fruits in their hands, they felt these were easily the most disgusting things they had ever eaten in their lives.
They had never eaten shit, but describing shit as tasting like these things probably would not be an exaggeration.
"Ah, crunch!" Without another word, Jelly opened his mouth and stuffed the Devil Fruit into his stomach in huge bites.
"Damn it." Seeing that Jelly had finished his, Ham gripped his Devil Fruit and bit down repeatedly. He did not even have time to chew it properly. It tasted too awful, so he could only force himself to swallow it.
"Hahaha!"
Watching the two finish their Devil Fruits, Rogge burst out laughing and tossed the remaining fruit in his hand into the sea.
"???" The two stared wide-eyed at Rogge, their heads filled with question marks.
"He tricked you. You only need to take the first bite of a Devil Fruit. Eating more has nothing to do with making its power stronger," said the yellow-skinned fish-man as he emerged from the sea.
"Bastard!"
"You son of a bitch!"
The two lunged at him at the same time. Countless vines suddenly sprouted from Jelly's body and wrapped Rogge up.
"What is this?"
Rogge stared at the branches in surprise, making no attempt to resist as the vines bound him.
"This is my Fruit ability." Jelly raised his hand with a smile. His fingers had turned into vines, and his entire body had become a tree, his skin a bluish green.
"A Paramecia plant-type ability." Rogge looked astonished.
"This ability is pretty good, though it does not seem to work well with my swordsmanship. Oh well, I'll study it later. At least it looks pretty good for now." Jelly grinned at Rogge, who was wrapped up like a dumpling.
"Ham, what's your ability?" Rogge ignored Jelly and turned his gaze toward Ham.
"Not bad. This ability suits me well." Ham's body began to change, his clothes stretching apart as a tall, slender figure emerged. Thick yellow fur covered his body, his fists became enormous, and his bulging muscles stood out clearly. Combined with Ham's original size, he looked even more terrifying.
"A Zoan. So ugly. Is that a kangaroo?" Jelly asked.
"A Zoan-type Kangaroo Fruit," Ham said.
"Looks like they're all pretty good abilities." Rogge smiled.
"What about yours? Don't think I don't know. The Fruit you ate definitely wasn't ordinary. I wanted to take it before, but I saw your eyes and decided not to touch it." Ham glared at Rogge.
"I think I hit the jackpot. Hahaha!" Rogge's body shuddered, and all the vines binding him shattered. At the same time, a gust of wind pressure burst outward toward them.
"Hm?"
The three of them looked at Rogge in surprise. They could sense a force erupting from his body, but they could not see it clearly.
To demonstrate his ability to them, Rogge found a sailor's knife on the deck and held it in his hand.
"Shatter!"
"Buzz!"
A strange power erupted from Rogge's body, and the sailor's knife in his hand broke apart into countless fragments.
"This..." Jelly and the others were stunned.
"A Paramecia Chop-Chop Fruit! Hahahaha!" Rogge laughed loudly.
"Your ability is to shatter anything you touch?" the fish-man asked, his eyes widening.
"That's right. Anything I touch can be shattered." Rogge placed his hand against the side of the ship and used his ability slightly.
Bang!
The wooden planks exploded, and chunks of wood fell into the sea.
"Hey, hey, hey, isn't that ability way too overpowered? I regret it!" Jelly cried.
"What? You regret it? Hahaha, too late." Rogge laughed.
"I suppose that's fate. But now that we have the Fruits, what are we doing next?" Ham reverted from his kangaroo form. He felt that he should probably give up his current weapon and switch to gauntlets or some other fist-based weapon that better suited his ability.
"We're entering the Grand Line. The Marines spotted me before, so I'll probably be wanted soon. There's no point staying in the West Blue any longer," Rogge said.
"That's true. We already got what we wanted. Next, we enter the Grand Line. That's where our battlefield is." Jelly smiled.
"The pirates took heavy losses this time. Since the Marines have already found you, the black market will probably trace me as well. If we don't run now, both the underworld and the authorities across the entire West Blue will hunt us down," Jelly continued with a smile.
"Can they even threaten us now? It's not that I look down on them, but our strength is no longer what it used to be," Ham said confidently.
"We should still head into the New World. But with only three of us, our numbers are a little low. We need to recruit a few more people. After all, the Grand Line is far more dangerous than the West Blue." Rogge frowned.
"Isn't there a ready-made candidate right here?" Jelly said with a smile, turning his gaze to the side.
Following his line of sight, Rogge and Ham both looked over.
Their eyes met those of the yellow-skinned fish-man, who was still aboard their ship.
"Cook, what are you planning to do next? Want to join us?" Ham asked with a smile.
"No problem. You may only be rookies, but you already have powerful abilities. Perhaps adventuring with you will lead to more interesting things." Cook said.
"You don't seem like an ordinary fish-man." Rogge examined Cook.
"You know a lot about fish-men?" Cook asked Rogge.
"The most famous fish-man in the world right now is Jinbe the Knight of the Sea, one of the Shichibukai. Do you know him?" Rogge asked.
"Jinbe? Yes, I know him." Cook nodded.
"Oh!"
Rogge had not expected Cook to remain so calm upon hearing Jinbe's name. After Fisher Tiger's death, Jinbe had become the strongest fish-man and the leader of the fish-men. Although some fish-men did not acknowledge him, no one could deny Jinbe's strength.
"In that case, welcome aboard. I'm Captain Rogge." Rogge extended his hand.
"Cook. I'm a shipwright." Cook reached out and shook Rogge's hand.
"Looks like we found a treasure. Fish-men are among the best in the world at steering ships and shipbuilding." Rogge smiled.
"How do you know that?" Cook asked.
"I've heard about it." Rogge smiled.
"Now our pirate crew has four people, but we're still missing one crucial profession," Jelly said.
"What are we missing?" Ham asked in confusion.
"The captain can't do anything except fight and scheme. You're the navigator, Cook is the shipwright, and I'm the cook. Normally, that lineup is enough for sailing, but the most dangerous thing at sea isn't the enemy. It's disease," Jelly said.
"A ship's doctor." Ham came to a realization.
"I happen to know one." Cook hesitated for a moment.
"Then we'll find him. Once we have everyone, we'll set off for the Grand Line." Rogge clapped his hands and made the decision.
