Background / History

Ham recruited Cook as the Fish-Man contact needed for Rogge’s Heavenly Tribute operation. During the raid, Cook created an underwater entry route for Rogge, supplied him with air in a coral bubble, and smashed through a warship’s hull with his hammer. He later helped Rogge escape Vice Admiral Doberman’s pursuit at sea. 3 6 7

After the theft, Cook accepted Rogge’s invitation to join the crew, identifying himself as a shipwright. His knowledge of Fish-Man Island, sailing, and shipbuilding made him an immediate asset as the crew prepared to enter the Grand Line. 8 10

Cook had previously rescued Ares when an earthquake flooded the Marine prison where the doctor had been held for twenty years. He left Ares on Thousand Lake Island, then later brought Rogge’s crew there to find him after learning that the Bloodhand Pirates had abducted him. 9 11

Cook fought alongside Rogge, Jelly, and Ham during the assault on the Bloodhand Pirates’ base. Brian’s apparent murder of Ares enraged him, but Ares had used a blood pack to fake his death; Cook then formally invited the surviving doctor aboard. 12 15 16

Following the battle, Cook converted a Bloodhand satellite ship into the crew’s vessel, accommodating each crewmate’s requested facilities. He later outfitted the ship with an engine, battery, stern propellers, and external propulsion, which allowed the renamed Hell to escape ten pursuing Marine warships. 17 18 40 41

Cook later guided the crew through the dangerous descent to Fish-Man Island. The Neptune Army recognized him as a former captain and welcomed him as a respected figure who had once served under the royal family. 124

His former identity was revealed to be Fisher Cook, a feared Fish-Man believed to have died years earlier. He had inherited the position of Neptune Army captain after Jinbe left to join Fisher Tiger’s Sun Pirates. Cook’s Fish-Man Karate had been taught by both Fisher Tiger, his biological older brother, and Jinbe. 127 129

After Fisher Tiger’s death, Arlong told Cook that Tiger had been enslaved by the Celestial Dragons. Consumed by grief and hatred, Cook joined Arlong and participated in a violent campaign against humans on Fish-Man Island. Jinbe eventually expelled him from the island after Cook’s killings became uncontrollable. 128 129

Cook later traveled through the West Blue and was gravely wounded during an attack on Marines. A human rescued him and helped him recover, causing his indiscriminate hatred of humanity to weaken. He continued to hate the Celestial Dragons, whom he regarded as the true source of Fisher Tiger’s suffering. 129

Ham recruited Cook by telling him that the crew intended to attack the Heavenly Tribute. Cook was impressed that the physically weak Rogge was willing to challenge the Celestial Dragons, and he became loyal after learning that Rogge intended to overthrow their corrupt rule. 129

During the crew’s return to Fish-Man Island, Cook confronted Hody Jones’s followers after discovering that his abandoned home had been converted into a tavern. He defeated Hyouzou and the other New Fish-Man Pirates but refused to kill them because they were fellow Fish-Men. He subsequently told Rogge and the crew about Fisher Tiger’s enslavement and death. 127 129

When Hody Jones and thousands of Fish-Men confronted the crew, Rogge publicly declared Cook his companion rather than a human subordinate. Rogge then subdued the crowd with Conqueror’s Haki, while Cook’s wishes prevented him from killing them. 129 130

Cook later revealed that he had eaten the Ice-Ice Fruit acquired after the Asura Pirates killed former Admiral Kuzan. The decision cost him his natural ability to swim and made seawater a major weakness, but it gave him the power to transform into ice and greatly increased his combat ability. 311 321

He used the Ice-Ice Fruit against Jinbe during a confrontation over Fish-Man Island’s protection. Although Jinbe was stronger in traditional Fish-Man Karate, Cook combined his martial art with his new Logia power and eventually froze him after a day-long battle. 311 312

Cook subsequently became commander of the Asura Pirates’ Second Division, the Freezing Fleet. Alongside Kangaroo Ham, he led a major division of the growing organization and was identified as one of Rogge’s two most trusted companions. 332

Appearance

Cook is a yellow-skinned Fish-Man with a visible dorsal fin. He commonly carries an enormous iron hammer used for shipbuilding and combat. 6 17 21

Personality

Cook is practical, level-headed, and often acts as a restraint on the crew’s more destructive impulses. During the Bloodhand Pirates raid, he repeatedly reminded Jelly and Ham that their goal was to locate Ares rather than massacre every enemy in the base. 12

He is fiercely protective of people he considers companions, particularly Ares. Cook’s horror at Ares being seemingly killed by Brian immediately turned to rage, and he was deeply relieved when Ares revealed that he had survived. 15 16

Cook takes pride in his shipwright work and reacts badly when Rogge insults the crew’s ship. He is also guarded when outsiders romanticize the Fish-Man Tribe, warning Ham that humans do not understand Fish-Men’s circumstances. 19 30 40

Despite his usual restraint, Cook possesses a violent past and an exceptionally powerful killing intent. The occupation and destruction of his childhood home caused him to lose control, revealing the feared personality associated with his former identity as Fisher Cook. 127 128

Cook continues to resent the Celestial Dragons because of their enslavement of Fisher Tiger, but he has rejected indiscriminate hatred toward ordinary humans. He now distinguishes between those responsible for oppression and companions who have earned his trust. 129 195

He is embarrassed by the Asura Pirates’ chaotic behavior, particularly when they meet people from his past, but he is deeply attached to the crew. Their immediate willingness to defend him confirms the family-like bond between them. 126 129

Cook is also intensely proud of his Fish-Man identity. He refuses to eat fish because he regards fish as members of his own kind, and he initially expresses little interest in relationships with humans. 19 67
