Background / History

Ham recruited Cook as the Fish-Man contact needed for Rogge’s Heavenly Tribute operation. During the raid, Cook created an underwater entry route for Rogge, supplied him with air in a coral bubble, and smashed through a warship’s hull with his hammer. He later helped Rogge escape Vice Admiral Doberman’s pursuit at sea. 3 6 7

After the theft, Cook accepted Rogge’s invitation to join the crew, identifying himself as a shipwright. His knowledge of Fish-Man Island, sailing, and shipbuilding made him an immediate asset as the crew prepared to enter the Grand Line. 8 10

Cook had previously rescued Ares when an earthquake flooded the Marine prison where the doctor had been held for twenty years. He left Ares on Thousand Lake Island, then later brought Rogge’s crew there to find him after learning that the Bloodhand Pirates had abducted him. 9 11

Cook fought alongside Rogge, Jelly, and Ham during the assault on the Bloodhand Pirates’ base. Brian’s apparent murder of Ares enraged him, but Ares had used a blood pack to fake his death; Cook then formally invited the surviving doctor aboard. 12 15 16

Following the battle, Cook converted a Bloodhand satellite ship into the crew’s vessel, accommodating each crewmate’s requested facilities. He later outfitted the ship with an engine, battery, stern propellers, and external propulsion, which allowed the renamed Hell to escape ten pursuing Marine warships. 17 18 40 41

Appearance

Cook is a yellow-skinned Fish-Man with a visible dorsal fin. He commonly carries an enormous iron hammer used for shipbuilding and combat. 6 17 21

Personality

Cook is practical, level-headed, and often acts as a restraint on the crew’s more destructive impulses. During the Bloodhand Pirates raid, he repeatedly reminded Jelly and Ham that their goal was to locate Ares rather than massacre every enemy in the base. 12

He is fiercely protective of people he considers companions, particularly Ares. Cook’s horror at Ares being seemingly killed by Brian immediately turned to rage, and he was deeply relieved when Ares revealed that he had survived. 15 16

Cook takes pride in his shipwright work and reacts badly when Rogge insults the crew’s ship. He is also guarded when outsiders romanticize the Fish-Man Tribe, warning Ham that humans do not understand Fish-Men’s circumstances. 19 30 40
