Background

Jelly was born as the illegitimate son of an aristocrat and a female slave. His father had his mother killed to conceal Jelly’s birth, then raised Jelly within the family. Jelly later served in a kingdom’s guard unit and accompanied his king to Mary Geoise, where he witnessed the king grovel before the Celestial Dragons. 1 2

While still connected to the kingdom, Jelly learned cooking to impress women. After learning the truth of his birth and mother’s murder, he killed his father, abandoned the kingdom, and joined a pirate crew out of curiosity. 1

When Rogge moved against the crew’s original captain, Jelly sided with Rogge and Ham. After helping kill the headscarf-wearing crewman, the three formed their own pirate crew. Jelly assessed the former captain’s hidden treasure, later disposed of stolen black gold through another country, and provided the group with roughly 100 million Beli. 1 2

Before joining Rogge, Jelly also worked in the West Blue black market. His criminal contacts allowed him to identify prominent pirates and bounty hunters, gather information, and spread news of the Heavenly Tribute throughout the West Blue. 2 3 13

Appearance

Jelly is a golden-haired swordsman who carries a long blade at his waist. 1

Jelly is arrogant, theatrical, and highly sensitive to humiliation. His loss to Taote at age fourteen remained a source of embarrassment for a decade; when Taote expected a formal rematch, Jelly discarded knightly etiquette and killed him with an unexpected vine-assisted thrust. 13

He is calculating and ruthless. He helped betray his former crew, spread information about the Heavenly Tribute to draw pirate crews into Rogge’s plan, and later kills enemies with deliberate cruelty while treating the violence as artistic. 1 3 26

Jelly is pragmatic about combat and accepts underhanded tactics when they improve the crew’s chances of survival. He uses invisible-trap detection, ranged vine attacks, poison-gas bombardment, and Seastone restraints without concern for conventional honor. 13 77 340 401

Despite his hostility toward Rogge’s decisions, Jelly is a committed member of the crew. He repeatedly challenges Rogge, argues over matters ranging from the crew name to their pirate flag, and still supports the crew’s dangerous ventures. 8 11 17

He is also intensely competitive. He deliberately provokes Enel and uses their fights to improve his Haki and Devil Fruit control, while maintaining a hostile but trusting rivalry with Jerry. 188 193 216

Jelly possesses the Vine-Vine Fruit, initially regarded as a plant-based Paramecia. It later becomes clear that the fruit is a rare Special Paramecia with awakened properties, allowing Jelly to transform his own body into vines as well as create, manipulate, and extend them. 8 169

Jelly helps Rogge and Ham eliminate their former captain and remaining rival, then assists in converting stolen assets into usable funds. He takes responsibility for gathering information and spreading word of the Heavenly Tribute route. 1 3

Heavenly Tribute Heist

Jelly supports the plan to exploit other pirates’ greed, chooses one of the stolen Devil Fruits, and becomes a Vine-Vine Fruit user. He then helps recruit Cook and argues for finding a ship’s doctor before entering the Grand Line. 2 7 8

Bloodhand Pirates Conflict

At Thousand Lake Island, Jelly participates in the Asura Pirates’ assault on the Bloodhand Pirates to rescue Ares and secure a better ship. He develops Ground Spikes, kills Taote and Dubois, unveils Giant Wood Soldier, and executes Obadaya after Rogge orders the remaining enemies killed. 11 15

Entering the Grand Line

Jelly’s vines save the crew when Rogge improperly secures the ship during the climb up Reverse Mountain. He later joins the defense against pursuing pirate fleets and bounty hunters while continuing to improve his fruit control through combat and Rogge’s training. 21 23 26 27

Earthfire Island and Marine Pursuit

Jelly helps defeat the World Government agents and armies defending Earthfire Island, then uses his vines to create net bags for transporting the crew’s massive haul. During Hina’s naval attack, he wraps the ship in vines against incoming iron spears. 36 39 30

Alabasta

Jelly travels with the crew to Rainbase, enjoys the city’s food after becoming tired of ship provisions, and remains unconcerned when Baroque Works agents identify Rogge and Simon. He later recognizes Daz Bones and restrains Miss Doublefinger with his vines during the conflict with Baroque Works. 49 50 52 53

Sky Island Trials and Enel

On Sky Island, Jelly defeats White Beret soldiers, completes the Ordeal of String, and exposes the invisible strings that make the trial dangerous. He then helps defeat Shura and participates in the battles against Enel and the remaining priests. 73 77 78

Jelly initially attacks Enel with his rapier and vines, but Enel’s lightning Logia body renders the attacks ineffective and sends electricity through the vines into Jelly. During the later confrontation, Jelly protects the sleeping Rogge with a Thorn Shield and helps coordinate attacks that temporarily injure Enel. 78 79

Sabaody and the New World

At Sabaody Archipelago, Jelly acts as the crew’s enforcer and captures potential guides with Snake Shadow. He continues to serve as one of Rogge’s most reliable senior fighters while the crew expands its influence and enters the New World. 110

Jelly trains Simon in Observation Haki and continues developing his own Haki and awakened Vine-Vine Fruit. By this period, he can control more than a thousand Armament Haki-coated vines and is recognized as one of the crew’s strongest fighters. 159 169 188 212

Asura Pirates Expansion and Pacifista Recovery

Jelly becomes captain of the Asura Pirates’ Third Division, operating under the title Blood Vine Jelly. He and Jerry travel through countries under the crew’s protection, publicly presenting their interventions as rescues while actually pursuing World Government weapons such as the Pacifista. 400 401

Jelly analyzes the Pacifista’s awakened Zoan-like regeneration and helps capture it alive using Seastone chains and vines so that Rogge’s organization can study its construction. 401

Battle with Kizaru

When Admiral Kizaru intercepts Jelly and Jerry during the recovery of another Pacifista, Jelly refuses to surrender the weapon because Rogge ordered them to bring it back. He uses Bird’s Nest to survive Kizaru’s bombardment and attacks with Forgotten Forest, an immense field of Armament Haki-coated vines. 405

Jelly then fights Kizaru with a vine-created wooden sword. When Jerry is badly wounded, Jelly expands into Giant Tree Man and attacks Kizaru with approximately ten thousand Armament Haki-coated vine spears. He creates enormous green dragons and coordinates with Jerry’s stealth attacks, helping inflict serious injuries on the Admiral. 406 407
