Background
Ham had worked among mercenary groups for over twenty years, accumulating extensive navigation experience. His former group was wiped out in a double-cross, but Ham survived and eventually joined the pirate crew in which he met Rogge and Jelly. Though he usually kept a low profile, he was already a capable fighter. 1
After the three became independent, Ham helped dispose of their illicit funds and supported Rogge's increasingly ambitious plans. For the Heavenly Tribute operation, he spent considerable money and effort locating a Fish-Man ally capable of creating an underwater entry point into a Marine warship. 2 3 6
Following the theft of the three Devil Fruits, Ham ate the Kangaroo Fruit and became one of the Asura Pirates' principal combatants. 8
Personality
Ham is practical, level-headed, and usually serves as a counterweight to Rogge's reckless confidence. He repeatedly warns the crew against charging blindly into overwhelming enemy forces, including the Bloodhand Pirates and naval battles where Devil Fruit users risk drowning if their ship is destroyed. 11 20
Despite this caution, he is not timid. Ham supports dangerous decisions once they are made, trusts Rogge's ability to survive, and can be ruthlessly direct when evaluating potential threats. When the crew considers recruiting Ares, Ham's immediate solution is to kill him should he refuse to cooperate. 9 26
He is also easygoing and humorous, frequently joining in the crew's teasing. Beneath that attitude, he is reflective about age, lost dreams, and how far the crew has risen from its beginnings. 20 47

Notable Quotes
“Did you know how weak he was when he was with us before? At most, he was only a little stronger than an ordinary person. But we were willing to follow him not because of his strength, but because of his ambition.” 27
