Ch. 261A meeting of eyes, part five
Key plot points and events
- Blackbeard tries to escape Marineford with his crew by having the giant Sanjuan Wolf carry them away. Sengoku attacks, but Blackbeard uses the Dark-Dark Fruit to release everything he had absorbed, including Rogge and several Marines, buying the crew time to flee.
- Rogge realizes the darkness can drain bodily functions, stamina, vitality, and even Haki. The Marines it releases are left badly weakened, while Rogge is exhausted but able to recover by eating.
- Sengoku sends Marines after Blackbeard, sensing that something serious has happened at Impel Down.
- Akainu continues pursuing Luffy. Jinbe, gravely wounded by Akainu, carries Luffy toward the shore while Crocodile, the Whitebeard Pirates, and Buggy help protect them.
- Red-Hair arrives and declares that he will end the war. Aokiji and Kizaru’s actions effectively help halt the pursuit, while Akainu remains determined to continue.
- Rogge notes that this version of events differs from the expected outcome: Blackbeard escaped without obtaining the Tremor-Tremor Fruit.
- Red-Hair asks Sengoku to let his crew handle Whitebeard’s and Ace’s funerals and urges the Marines not to exploit their deaths. Rogge and Mihawk decline to fight Red-Hair, saying their agreement covered Whitebeard, not him.
- Rogge leaves the battlefield, joking about going home to bathe. Before departing, he and Red-Hair exchange a meaningful look.
Character developments and interactions
- Rogge gains a clearer understanding of the Dark-Dark Fruit’s horrifying effects and recognizes how exhausted it has left him. Despite the devastation, he remains irreverent, eating and joking as the war ends.
- Blackbeard prioritizes survival and escapes rather than continuing to fight, relying on Sanjuan Wolf and his fruit’s ability to release what it has absorbed.
- Red-Hair takes command of the endgame, using his presence and words to stop further fighting and protect the dignity of Whitebeard and Ace.
- Sengoku is angered by Blackbeard’s escape and troubled by the unexplained events at Impel Down.
- Jinbe risks his life to protect Luffy, while Luffy’s severe physical and psychological injuries remain a concern.
- Rogge and Red-Hair’s brief eye contact closes the chapter with a hint of mutual recognition or future significance.
Significant themes
- The cost of power: The Dark-Dark Fruit’s strength comes with extreme drawbacks and can devastate anyone it consumes.

- Changing outcomes: Blackbeard’s escape without Whitebeard’s power marks a major divergence from the expected course of events.
- Honor and limits: Rogge and Mihawk refuse to expand their agreement into a fight with Red-Hair, while Red-Hair insists that the dead not be used for further political gain.
