World’s Greatest Swordsman 359 360 After ten years of training, gains a slight advantage over Rock in a swordsmanship contest. Rock publicly acknowledges him as the strongest swordsman on the seas; Mihawk subsequently loses their unrestricted fight.

Background / History

Mihawk travels in search of strong opponents rather than territory or plunder. His lethal duels cause extensive damage, and he defeats Marines repeatedly sent after him, earning the name “Marine Hunter.” He accepts a Shichibukai appointment when the World Government offers to stop pursuing him, leaving him free to train and challenge the strong 204.

At Loguetown, Mihawk helps Crocodile clear pirates from the square before challenging Vice Admiral Rock. Rock defeats him in a sword duel and has him taken aboard a Marine warship alive. During the return voyage, Rock offers him a swordsmanship match every month in exchange for not harming the weak and following certain orders that do not violate his own will. Mihawk accepts 228 230 232 236.

Ten years later, Mihawk and Rock finally hold their promised contest on a deserted island. Mihawk proves superior in swordsmanship, but Rock defeats him after switching to his full combat abilities; their battle destroys the island. Mihawk acknowledges both outcomes and leaves determined to grow stronger 359 360 362.

Appearance

Mihawk wears black and carries the enormous Black Blade Yoru. His sharp, eagle-like eyes are the source of his “Hawk-Eye” name 204 225.

  • Black clothing and cloak 204 563.
  • Yoru, carried on his back or kept beside him 225 356 563.
  • Small, coffin-like boat used for solitary travel 354 563.

Personality

Mihawk is reserved and focused almost entirely on swordsmanship. He has little interest in factions, territory, or status except where they help him train or find worthy opponents 204 356. His view of the sword centers on strength and victory; when Rock questions it, Mihawk briefly wavers before reaffirming that his path is to defeat the strongest 230.

He distinguishes technical mastery from overall combat power. After their later duel, he states plainly that he won the swordsmanship contest but lost the battle 362.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Mihawk’s precise, economical swordplay gives him an advantage over Rock’s lightning-enhanced speed in their later contest 359.

  • Uses Yoru to block rapid attacks from multiple blind spots and counter through timing and positioning 359.
  • Launches flying slashes powerful enough to tear across an island and part the sea in a clash 359.
  • Fights Shanks in an evenly matched sword duel, contrasting Mihawk’s measured technique with Shanks’s forceful approach 458.

Haki

  • Armament Haki: Coats Yoru during major exchanges, including his strongest attack against Rock at Loguetown 230 359.
  • Observation Haki: Senses Rock’s powerful presence at Loguetown 220.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Clashes with Shanks’s Haki during their confrontation on the road to Elbaf’s harbor 607.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black Blade Yoru — Mihawk’s primary weapon; he continues gripping it even after being knocked unconscious in his unrestricted battle with Rock 229 360.
  • Coffin boat — his small personal vessel 354 563.

Relationships

  • Rock — swordsman, rival, and the Marine who offers him recurring duels. Rock recognizes Mihawk’s superior swordsmanship, while Mihawk acknowledges Rock’s superiority in an unrestricted fight 236 359 360 362.
  • Shanks — fellow swordsman and recurring opponent; they clash when Mihawk helps prevent Shanks from reaching Rock, and later resume an unfinished fight 458 607.
  • S-Hawk — a Seraphim resembling Mihawk. Mihawk defeats him in a sword exchange, then tells him to claim the greatest-swordsman title for himself rather than expect to inherit it 563.
  • Roronoa Zoro — aspiring challenger. Mihawk becomes interested in Zoro’s determination despite learning that he is currently far weaker, and sets out toward the East Blue with S-Hawk 563.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Loguetown: Helps eliminate pirates after Roger’s execution, challenges Rock, and loses their first duel 228 229 230.
  • Shichibukai reorganization: Answers Rock’s summons and challenges him to settle their long-delayed swordsmanship contest 354 357 358.
  • Deserted-island duel: Earns Rock’s acknowledgment as the greatest swordsman before losing their unrestricted battle 359 360.
  • Gram Kingdom: Travels there after Rock mentions a promising future swordsman. Mihawk’s presence alone drives away hostile fleets and pirates 554.
  • Search for Zoro: Encounters S-Hawk, receives information about Zoro, and travels with S-Hawk to look for him 563 572.
