Background / History

Roger captains the Oro Jackson during the old era. While sailing the Grand Line, he learns that Shakuyaku has opened a bar on Hachinosu and immediately orders his crew to sail for the Rocks Pirates’ stronghold, despite its danger. 21

Before reaching Hachinosu, Roger senses Rock approaching from the sky and attacks with Divine Departure. Rock counters with 100 Million Volts: Divine Judgment, and their clash tears open the sea and creates a massive shockwave. 21 Recognizing that Rock carries no killing intent, Roger abruptly ends the confrontation and invites him aboard for drinks. 22

Rock’s account of hitching a ride on Shakuyaku’s Kuja ship provokes intense jealousy in Roger, who has never received the same privilege. 22 23 Rock later travels with the Roger Pirates specifically because he expects them to lead him to Garp. 23 24

When Garp’s Dog-Head Battleship intercepts the Oro Jackson, Roger eagerly meets his Marine rival in battle. Garp withstands Roger’s Haki-coated sword strike and punches him hard enough to twist his face, but Roger continues fighting until Rayleigh orders a retreat ahead of Marine reinforcements. 24 25

After receiving Shakuyaku’s message to Rayleigh—“Come pick me up.”—Roger resolves to pursue her rather than give up. He later brings the Roger Pirates to Shakuyaku’s bar on Hachinosu, where he confronts Rocks verbally but respects her rule forbidding fights inside the establishment. 36 37
