Background

The Merfolk Woman was bought by the old innkeeper as a concubine for his son, who had failed to enter Qi Refining despite being over sixty. The innkeeper hoped that a Merfolk Pearl could help his son cultivate. 26

Her enslaver became desperate because she remained optimistic and would not cry. He abused her in an attempt to force tears and obtain a pearl, until she killed him in desperation. As a demon who had killed a human, she was presumed doomed afterward. 26

Merfolk Characteristics

• Merfolk are an incompletely transformed race: half-human and half-demon, commonly called mermaids. 32
• Their tears can condense into Merfolk Pearls, which can heal injuries and illnesses or aid cultivation. 32
• Merfolk Women are often captured, sold, and forced to cry for pearl production; this exploitation has left the Merfolk Clan nearly extinct. 32
• They have human upper bodies and fish tails. 32
• Merfolk are created through transformation rather than human-demon reproduction; humans and demons cannot produce a self-sustaining lineage together. 40
