Background / History

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi's accomplished disciple and one of Konoha's Sannin. Before the Third Great Ninja War fully erupted, he was stationed in the Land of Hot Water with Konoha ninja and Anbu to deter Kirigakure probes. He regarded Hiruzen's defensive approach as overly cautious, believing Konoha should swiftly crush a vulnerable rival to discourage the other villages. 12

While stationed at the border, he continued experimenting with precision instruments and unknown liquids. His interest in bloodlines was already apparent: learning that the Kaguya Clan's Shikotsumyaku had not awakened in any current member, he still considered a future awakener ideal research material. 12

Following Iwagakure's attack on Tori Mori Outpost, Hiruzen assigned Orochimaru to lead the recovery and response force. Orochimaru recruited—or attempted to recruit—Maruyama Qifeng because of his ability to handle corpses, openly mentioning an experiment that required such a specialist. 23

During the early war, Orochimaru led Konoha's operations in the Land of Waterfalls. His forces devastated an Iwa Elite Ambush Squad, killing seven of its eight jonin and twenty of its twenty-four chunin despite Konoha's own severe losses. 30 He later fought Iwa commander Tu He directly, driving the Quasi-Kage-level commander into retreat while breaking the enemy advance force's cohesion. 49 55

Orochimaru's growing attention toward Qifeng became increasingly direct after he detected the death of Kaguya Senjin through the network of snakes he had spread across the Land of Hot Water. He repeatedly probed Qifeng over his improbable survival against enemy jonin and eventually recognized both Sharingan and Shikotsumyaku in Qifeng's disguised form. 32 51 52

After the war, he approached Qifeng again in the Konoha Morgue and proposed collaborating on Uchiha research. He revealed that he possessed Senju Hashirama's cell samples and considered Qifeng's theory—combining the Sharingan's Yin chakra with an appropriate Yang attribute—a viable research direction. 201

Qifeng later joined Orochimaru at his secret research base. Orochimaru explained his pursuit of immortality and cooperated in research involving bloodlines, Sage Mode, and the conditions behind “All Creation.” 202 207 After Qifeng became Fifth Hokage, Orochimaru was allowed to remain in Konoha, receive research support, and avoid routine missions, provided he submitted results and did not experiment on people from Konoha or the Land of Fire. 214
