Background / History
Hiruzen leads Konoha through a period in which the village faces pressure from several major hidden villages. He oversees deployments, intelligence, reinforcements, medical support, and battlefield logistics from the Hokage Office, while working with Danzō, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura. He considers Konoha’s shinobi irreplaceable and reacts with personal grief to reports of heavy casualties. 55 120 141
He and Danzō have worked together since Hiruzen first took the Hokage seat. Hiruzen relied on Danzō’s strength to stabilize Konoha during his early rule, but their long partnership also leaves him connected to Danzō’s actions and ambitions. 70 174 190
During the Third Great Ninja War, Hiruzen initially regards his nephew, Sarutobi Hiruzen/Hiruma, as diligent but unremarkable. The nephew’s sudden emergence as a Magnet Release wielder and battlefield hero catches him entirely off guard. Hiruzen recalls him to Konoha, investigates his changed abilities through Anbu, then accepts his identity and promotes him to full Jonin with independent battlefield authority. 121 124
As the war continues, Hiruzen publicly supports the rise of “Spear of Judgment” Sarutobi Hiruzen and Namikaze Minato as Konoha’s Twin Stars. He rewards his nephew’s service by allowing an exchange of Judgment of Takemikazuchi for a technique from the Scroll of Seals, and appoints him leading Jonin of Asuma’s squad. 141 147 163
Hiruzen eventually backs Minato over Danzō for the Fourth Hokage position. After Minato assumes office, Hiruzen places himself under house arrest and steps back from his former duties, acknowledging his mistakes. 194 206
His distrust of Qifeng’s activities later contributes to his decision to exclude Qifeng from Kushina’s childbirth arrangements. During the resulting Nine-Tails’ Rampage, Hiruzen fights alongside Minato and Jiraiya, but is confronted by Qifeng over his secrecy and indecision. 208 209
Following Minato’s death and Qifeng’s succession as Fifth Hokage, Hiruzen formally transfers the Hokage hat to Qifeng. He retains the nominal position of Hokage Advisor, though Qifeng’s restructuring of Anbu and Root sharply reduces Hiruzen’s remaining institutional influence. 214
Appearance
Hiruzen is an aging man whose hair has become streaked with white. The prolonged war visibly worsens his condition, making him appear to have aged a decade in little more than a year. 123 160
- Frequently smokes a pipe while working or considering reports. 55 124
- Often works behind a mountain of battlefield documents. 160
- Retains a sharp, intimidating gaze despite his age and fatigue. 124 141
Personality
Hiruzen is a burdened and politically experienced leader. He values battlefield results, village morale, and the preservation of Konoha’s manpower; this makes him willing to support exceptional shinobi even when their sudden rise creates doubts among the elders. 55 124 141
He is capable of warmth toward family and subordinates. He worries that he has neglected Asuma, asks his nephew to protect him, and privately watches over members of his family despite avoiding open favoritism as Hokage. 121 124
Age, war, and responsibility increasingly make him suspicious, cautious, and indecisive. He recognizes his own paranoia after investigating his nephew, yet remains unable to fully dismiss his doubts. This tendency later damages his trust with Qifeng. 124 127 208 209
