Background

Gu Lei was born with an ordinary toad Martial Soul and level-six Innate Soul Power. As a child, he fell into a valley inhabited by toad-type soul beasts and survived by swallowing the Golden-Horned Herb. The herb evolved his Martial Soul into the Golden-Horned Toad, but he lacked the strength to explore the valley further. 18

He entered Heaven Dou Royal Academy through a noble's recommendation, despite commoners normally requiring at least level-seven Innate Soul Power for admission. His low resources and commoner status made him a target of discrimination among the academy's noble students. 18

He holds Dugu Feng in intense admiration and initially doubts his own talent despite his rapid growth. Dugu Feng repeatedly reassures him that reaching Soul King around age twenty-three would still mark him as exceptional. 47

In battle, Gu Lei is willing to protect his allies. He blocks Tang San's Blue Silver Thorn Formation to shield Dugu Yan and continues fighting after breaking free of the Blue Silver Cage. 53

Recruitment at Heaven Dou Royal Academy

Dugu Feng finds Gu Lei being bullied by noble students outside the academy library. After identifying his Golden-Horned Toad Martial Soul, Dugu Feng accepts him as a disciple and has him moved into his dormitory. The academy's Education Committee subsequently promotes Gu Lei to a Heaven Dou Level student. 18 19

Training Under Dugu Feng

Gu Lei supplies Dugu Feng with the approximate location of the valley where he found the Golden-Horned Herb. In return, he receives the weakened Toad Breathing Method and is assigned to the academy's reserve team rather than the main Imperial Fighting Team, as Dugu Feng believes Gu Lei is not yet ready for its Soul Elder-heavy lineup. 19

God Toad Sect

Gu Lei reunites with Dugu Feng during the Spirit Hall attack on the Heaven Dou delegation, having reached level 49. He suggests the name God Toad Sect as an improvement over Dugu Feng's proposed “Toad God Sect,” and Dugu Feng accepts it. 47 48

Dugu Feng later names Gu Lei the sect's first official disciple and teaches him the complete Toad Breathing Method. 51

Soul Master Tournament

Gu Lei replaces Osler in the Imperial Fighting Team's lineup for the match against Shrek Academy. He is assigned to defeat Oscar and then target Ning Rongrong if possible. 52

During the battle, he uses Golden Flash Strike to eliminate Xiao Wu, blocks attacks aimed at Dugu Yan, and breaks through Tang San's Blue Silver Cage before being poisoned. 53
