Background / History
Family and Spirit Hall
Dugu Bo’s son died from the venom produced by his own serpent Martial Soul. The death coincided with Dugu Bo’s breakthrough to Titled Douluo and remained a source of grief long afterward. Dugu Bo also suffered from venom backlash and feared that his granddaughter, Dugu Yan, would inherit the same fate 4 75.
Before the opening of the story, Dugu Bo refused to serve Spirit Hall. It branded him a heretic and sent Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo to kill him. This hostility later prompted him to keep Dugu Feng’s exceptional talent secret 1.
After discovering the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Dugu Bo found Dugu Feng in Sunset Forest and adopted him. Although unrelated by blood, the two developed a close grandfather–grandson bond 1 2.
Raising Dugu Feng
Dugu Bo supervised six-year-old Feng’s Martial Soul awakening at Dugu Manor. He welcomed the Toxic Toad as a suitable inheritance for his poison expertise, then warned Feng not to reveal his Innate Full Soul Power 1.
He taught Feng to identify and refine poisons, initially supplying only toad poison to avoid recreating his own cultivation problems. Months of testing convinced him that Feng could absorb toxins without leaving harmful residue, allowing him to broaden the poisons used in training 2.
His instruction combined practical support with deliberate exposure to danger. He weakened Feng’s first soul beast but required the boy to kill it himself, later supervised increasingly difficult hunts, and secretly followed him into the Star Dou Great Forest. When Feng survived an ambush by hostile soul masters, Dugu Bo approved his decisiveness and arranged his admission to Heaven Dou Royal Academy 1 3 6 10 12.
Overcoming the Family’s Venom
Dugu Bo supervised Feng’s extraction of venom from Dugu Yan, remaining ready to intervene if either grandchild lost control. The procedure relieved Yan’s symptoms but could not stop her Martial Soul from producing more venom 4.
Feng subsequently devised a method to rebuild Dugu Bo’s life-linked Poison Pill. Dugu Bo accepted the risk of fatal failure and allowed Feng’s Devouring Poison Gas into his body without resistance. Their cooperation produced a Poison-Attribute Soul Core and raised him from level 91 to level 93 6 7.
He also delivered Aromatic Silk Beauty to Dugu Yan. Its eventual effect—evolving her Martial Soul into the Jade Spirit Serpent Emperor—removed her venom-backlash problem 8 15.
Protecting the Family and Building a Sect
During Feng’s extended disappearance, Dugu Bo searched the Star Dou Great Forest and feared the boy had died. Their reunion began with an ambush designed to test Feng’s strength, followed by an emotional conversation. Dugu Bo then opposed his participation in the tournament at Spirit Hall, fearing recruitment pressure or assassination 34.
As Feng grew stronger, Dugu Bo gradually accepted greater independence. He approved a solo seventh-ring hunt because Feng possessed an instantaneous escape skill, although he did not know the intended target was a hundred-thousand-year soul beast 39.
Later, he agreed to help develop the God Toad Sect as its chief elder. The plan placed the inner sect on Toad God Island and an outer sect near the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. He declined Feng’s offer of eventual passage to the Divine Realm, preferring to remain with the family, raise future generations, and build the sect 74.
After reaching level 95, Dugu Bo remained responsible for the well and accepted responsibility for Ye Lingling’s safety. When Feng announced his journey to Slaughter City, Dugu Bo trusted his level-97 strength and offered to escort Lingling to the island himself 75 77 78.
Personality
Dugu Bo is openly proud of his grandchildren but cautious about the dangers accompanying their talent. He celebrates Feng’s achievements, supplies cultivation resources, and searches for him when he disappears. His protectiveness does not mean sheltering Feng from every threat: he believes experience, personal danger, and decisive treatment of enemies are necessary parts of a poison master’s education 1 3 10 12 34.
His trust in Feng eventually becomes strong enough to risk his life on the boy’s cultivation method. Family continuity matters more to him than immortality: he supports Feng’s relationship with Ye Lingling, accepts the Ye family’s surname requirement for suitable descendants, and repeatedly urges Feng to marry and have children 6 7 73 74.
