When Hermione returned with her notes in her arms, this was what she saw—
Vera and Harry sat before the fireplace, its glow spilling over them and gilding the silver-gray long hair and somewhat tousled black hair with a warm edge of gold.
Hermione stared at them for a moment, her lips unconsciously curling upward. She quietly walked over, sat between them, and placed her notes on the table.
The three girls sat around the fireplace and began working on their respective assignments.
Vera wrote quickly, and Hermione wrote smoothly as well, without much difficulty.
Only Harry bit the end of her quill, staring miserably at the parchment where she had written just three lines. "I have no idea what to write... Why do herbs have to be divided into so many categories?"
That was a very good question.
Vera sighed softly, wheeled herself closer, and looked over the deliberately oversized words Harry had written. "What are the properties of Dittany?"
Harry blinked. "Uh... it can heal wounds?"
"Right." Vera nodded and continued guiding her. "Then what kind of environment does it grow in?"
"Um... damp, dark places?" Harry answered uncertainly.
Hermione interjected, "One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi clearly says that Dittany prefers warm, humid environments. It also likes sunlight, and the soil needs to stay moist without becoming waterlogged."
Vera gave Hermione an approving look before continuing to Harry, "See? You already know quite a lot. Write those things down, then add your own observations—for example, why did the Dittany we saw today have serrated leaf edges?"
Harry suddenly understood. "Because it needs to prevent water from evaporating!"
"Exactly." Vera gently patted the back of her hand. "Now, try putting all of that into complete sentences and expanding on it a little."
With Vera and Hermione's help, Harry finally finished her assignment, stumbling through it bit by bit.
It was late at night when the final period was written. Harry's face overflowed with obvious accomplishment. "I actually filled an entire page of parchment!"
Hermione picked up their essays and carefully checked them over. "Vera's part is practically perfect, and mine is all right too... Harry, this sentence is a little awkward..."
Already exhausted to the point of delirium, Harry immediately pounced on her and covered her mouth. "Please, don't say another word! My brain is already mush!"
Watching the two of them fool around, Vera could not help but smile. "Time to rest. We still have class tomorrow."
When they returned to the dormitory, Nox was already asleep on the cat tree.
The three girls quietly washed up and changed, afraid of waking him.
Only after sitting on her bed, while Harry and Hermione were still playfully arguing as they washed up, did Vera pick up that day's potion and drain it in one gulp.
The bitter liquid slid down her throat. Vera endured the discomfort as she felt the potion's effects spread through her body.
"Vera?" Harry called from the bathroom doorway. "Are you all right?"
She quickly set down the empty bottle and casually hid it beneath the blanket. "I'm fine."
Harry tilted her head. Her wet black hair clung to her cheeks, and her green eyes brimmed with worry. "But you look so pale..."
"I'm just a little tired." Vera dismissed it lightly. "You two should get some rest too."
Harry still wanted to say something, but Vera had already slipped beneath the covers, leaving behind only a "Good night."
Experience Monsters Have Respawned
The next morning was Charms class. Thanks to exploring the castle the day before, they found the Charms classroom without any trouble this time.
Professor Flitwick taught Charms. He was a small wizard who had to stand atop a stack of books just to barely reach the podium.
As far as Vera knew, Professor Flitwick had some goblin blood, which was why he was so short.
But because of that, he also possessed extraordinary magical talent and had once been a champion of wizard dueling.
Among Hogwarts' professors, aside from Dumbledore, his strength could rank in the top three.
"One of a wizard's fundamental skills is levitation, which is the Levitation Charm we'll be learning today." Standing atop his books, Professor Flitwick demonstrated the wand movement. "Remember the wrist motion we just practiced: a flick, then another flick—Wingardium Leviosa!"
The instant the incantation left his lips, strands of magic poured from his wand and wound around the feather before him like living creatures, gently lifting it into the air.
"Now, everyone, give it a try!" Professor Flitwick announced loudly.
The classroom immediately filled with overlapping chants and the sounds of waving wands.
Vera picked up her wand, recalling the way Professor Flitwick's magic had flowed just now. She tried to guide her own magic to imitate that flow, then flicked her wrist lightly—
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
Her feather immediately floated up, spinning elegantly in midair.
"Wonderful, Miss Black!" Professor Flitwick clapped in delight. "Five points to Gryffindor!"
Harry and Hermione watched Vera's feather enviously and practiced even harder.
Before long, Hermione's feather reacted too. It wobbled up over Vera's head, its pointed tip brushing across Vera's face again and again.
"Very good, Miss Granger has succeeded as well!" Flitwick praised her without holding back. "Another two points to Gryffindor!"
Vera laughed at the sudden "attack" and simply flicked her wand, making her feather and Hermione's chase each other through the air.
Watching them play around, Harry bit her lip with a hint of disappointment and waved her wand with even more effort. "Wingardium Leviosa! Wingardium Leviosa!"
But her feather only trembled slightly before dropping back onto the table.
"Don't rush," Vera reassured her softly. "Besides what the professor said, you can try... imagining that the feather is light as air, and your magic is the wind lifting it."
She took hold of Harry's wrist and guided her through the correct wand movement. "A flick, then another flick."
Guided by Vera, Harry lightly flicked her wrist. Her wand traced a graceful arc. "Wingardium Leviosa!"
This time, her feather trembled as it floated up. It was only a few inches above the table, but it really was suspended in the air.
"I did it!" Harry jumped up in excitement and nearly knocked into the table.
Professor Flitwick immediately noticed the commotion and hurried over. "Careful, Miss Potter! Still, well done. Casting a spell does indeed require a little imagination."
Harry smiled sheepishly, but her green eyes still sparkled with excitement.
Watching her bounce with joy, Vera's lips unconsciously curved upward.
Whether it was the Harry from the original story or the Harry before her now, her talent for magic was actually quite good. Otherwise, she could never have mastered one of the most profound branches of white magic, the Patronus Charm.
She merely lacked a little guidance sometimes.
Just then, Ron's feather suddenly exploded with a bang, covering his face in fluff.
"Cough, cough... The pronunciation needs to be correct. It's Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SA." Professor Flitwick waved his wand to clear the fluff off Ron. "And the wand movement should be gentle, not like you're swinging a windmill."
A wave of good-natured laughter broke out in the classroom. Ron's face flushed bright red, and he could only grab another feather and continue.
When the bell rang, most students had managed to make their feathers tremble at least a little. Only Neville's and Seamus's feathers had not moved at all—Seamus had even accidentally burned his feather, leaving the classroom filled with the smell of scorching.
"Next class, we'll continue practicing the Levitation Charm and learn some practical applications," Professor Flitwick announced.
That afternoon came the Defense Against the Dark Arts class that the students had all been eagerly anticipating. It was, however, an utter disaster.
Professor Quirrell's stammering lecture put everyone to sleep, while the classroom was filled with the pungent reek of garlic. It was truly unbearable.
When the dismissal bell rang, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"This was even more boring than History of Magic," Harry complained quietly. "And the garlic smell on him nearly knocked me out."
For once, Hermione wrinkled her nose and agreed with her.
Vera thoughtfully looked in the direction Quirrell had left. The Magic Circuit allowed her to clearly sense the evil aura hidden beneath his turban.
A fragment of Voldemort's soul had already parasitized the back of Quirrell's head, radiating unsettling Dark magic fluctuations.
As long as Harry attended class here, Voldemort, residing at the back of Quirrell's head, could spy on her whenever he wished.
"Let's hurry back to the common room," Vera softly suggested as soon as class ended.
Harry nodded and quickly put the matter out of her mind, instead beginning to discuss their upcoming classes.
Just as they crossed the courtyard, Malfoy and his two lackeys blocked their path.
"Well, look who it is," Malfoy drawled, malice gleaming in his gray eyes. "Gryffindor's wheelchair girl and her little followers."
Harry immediately stepped in front of Vera, fury blazing in her green eyes. "Malfoy, you'd better watch your mouth!"
Crabbe and Goyle let out crude laughter beside him, blocking the girls' way like two small mountains.
Vera lightly pressed Harry's wrist to signal her to calm down, then looked at Malfoy peacefully. "Cousin Draco, it seems you haven't learned your lesson from last time."
Malfoy's expression instantly darkened. "Don't call me that! You're a Gryffindor now!"
Vera narrowed her eyes slightly, her wheelchair gliding soundlessly forward a step. "I regret it too, but blood relations do not change because of Houses, just as your stupidity does not disappear simply because we belong to different Houses."
Crabbe and Goyle exchanged looks, clearly unable to keep up with the conversation.
Malfoy's face turned red, and his hand reached for the wand inside his robes. "How dare you—"
Before he could even pull out his wand, Vera had already drawn hers and aimed its tip straight at his face. "Expelliarmus!"
Battle Feels Great
"Expelliarmus!"
A dazzling red flash streaked through the air. Malfoy's wand flew from his hand, soaring high before dropping into Vera's grasp.
At the same time, a string of text rapidly formed across Vera's retina:
[First battle completed. Battle Resonance unlocked.] [Defeated opponent. Resonance Value +5.] [Current Battle Resonance: 5. During this battle, spellcasting speed +5%, magic power +5%, all basic attributes +5%. Continue defeating enemies to gain new bonuses. Resets when the battle ends.]
Vera raised her eyebrows in surprise. Before this, she had never fought anyone... She had not expected the Magic Circuit to possess such a hidden function.
Malfoy stood frozen in place, staring in disbelief at his empty hand before looking at the wand in Vera's hand. His face went from red to white. "You... How dare you!"
"This is only a small warning." Vera came back to herself and calmly toyed with Malfoy's wand. "If you cause trouble again, I won't mind making a fool of you in front of the entire school."
Crabbe and Goyle finally reacted and awkwardly drew their wands, only for Harry to swiftly step in front of them.
"Want to fight?" Harry's expression darkened as she pointed her wand at Crabbe. "Want to give it a try?"
Though Hermione was nervous and at a loss, with Harry taking the lead, she copied her and raised her wand in front of Vera. "That's right! We're not afraid of you!"
Malfoy's face shifted between green and white before he finally gritted out, "Let's go!"
Vera casually tossed his wand back to him. "Take your things."
Only after watching the three leave in embarrassment did Hermione relax. She could not help pressing a hand to her wildly pounding chest. "Merlin, Vera, when did you learn that?"
"I saw it in a book." Vera answered lightly, turning her wheelchair and continuing onward. "Come on, stop looking at them."
Harry quickly caught up with Vera, admiration shining in her green eyes. "That was so cool! His wand flew right into your hand! What was that spell? Can you teach me?"
"The Disarming Charm. It's a very practical defensive spell," Vera explained softly. "But I'm a little tired right now. Can we go back to the common room?"
Only then did Harry realize it. She nodded repeatedly and began pushing Vera's wheelchair toward the common room.
Along the way, Harry occasionally excitedly mimed the wand movement from earlier, her eyes full of longing.
Hermione was relatively calmer, but not by much... At the very least, Vera had already seen her secretly write the Disarming Charm into her little notebook.
After returning to the common room, Vera used the excuse that she needed rest to return to the dormitory alone. Seeing that she did not look well, Harry and Hermione did not follow her in to disturb her.
After closing the dormitory door, Vera immediately summoned the Magic Circuit, preparing to carefully study the newly unlocked [Battle Resonance].
[Battle Resonance: Accumulate Resonance Value through real combat to increase combat bonuses.] [During battle, victory grants 5 Resonance Value, while defeat grants 1 Resonance Value. Every 10 accumulated Resonance Value triggers a combat enhancement effect.] [After battle ends, 20% of Resonance Value will be converted into maximum magic power, and Magic Circuit experience will increase.]
Vera stared thoughtfully at the words floating across her retina, rubbing her wand between her fingers.
This newly unlocked mechanism was more valuable than she had expected—not only could it improve her combat ability, it could also accelerate the Magic Circuit's growth.
The 5 Resonance Value she had gained from defeating Malfoy had already raised her maximum magic power from 90 to 91. The increase was small, but she understood that little by little, it would add up.
"Besides regular practice, I'll have to find more opportunities for real combat..." Vera murmured, the corners of her lips lifting slightly.
But then she frowned—given her current identity, frequently getting into conflicts would probably draw unnecessary attention.
Nox leaped lightly down from the cat tree, his amber eyes fixed on his owner while the tip of his tail swayed gently.
"You think I should be more cautious too, don't you?" Vera reached out to stroke the black cat's sleek fur. "Don't worry. I won't go looking for trouble."
But if someone came knocking...
Vera gently stroked the cat's soft fur, considering what would happen next.
