"Vera," Hermione finally blurted out, "are you really going to duel Flint? He's Slytherin's Quidditch captain and has studied magic for four more years than we have!"
Hermione crouched down as well, looking at her worriedly. "And he's so big. What if he can't beat you and just cheats by rushing over to punch you..."
"Pfft!" Vera was amused by her words and couldn't help laughing.
Hermione stomped her foot, both anxious and annoyed. "I'm serious!"
Vera reined in her smile and gently patted Hermione's shoulder. "I know what you mean."
She freed herself from Hermione's grip and turned her wheelchair toward the castle. "I'm not targeting him. I just want everyone to know that provoking us rashly won't end well."
Sunlight filtered through her silver-gray hair, casting scattered shadows across her face.
At that moment, she looked remarkably calm, as though she hadn't been the one to propose the duel.
"Sometimes, you have to show your strength appropriately to earn others' respect." Vera spoke slowly, unconsciously gripping the blanket over her knees.
Yes. Especially for an exception like herself—merely walking among a crowd drew more attention than others received, and with it came criticism and mockery like a shadow.
Although she had spent this period with Harry and Hermione, and nearly everyone she interacted with had been relatively friendly Gryffindors, incidents like today's were by no means accidental.
Malfoy had been the first to step forward and provoke her, followed by Flint.
If she did not fight back, there would only be more situations like this in the future.
She could not simply sit and wait for others to come looking for trouble.
Besides, with the assistance of the Magic Circuit, she had become proficient in more and more spells during this time, and she was about to reach another bottleneck.
So, with someone finally coming to pick a fight, and Flint being a fifth-year Slytherin, both his year and House made him perfectly suited for her to practice against.
Of course, she could not let such a valuable opportunity for real combat pass her by. She could use it to confirm her current strength and lay the groundwork for taming the Three-Headed Dog later.
Harry and Hermione exchanged a silent glance, both seeing worry and helplessness in the other's eyes.
But they also knew Vera was right. Although dueling carried risks, it truly was a good way to improve their current situation.
At the very least, it would stop people from making so many comments about Vera's body.
"Should we buy some props?" Hermione asked uncertainly.
Vera thought for a moment, then shook her head. "I still have some left. We don't need any for now."
Besides, she preferred relying on her own strength. She could use props freely in life-or-death situations, but for an opportunity like this, she should keep them in reserve for now.
Seeing this, Harry hurriedly said, "Then I'll be your assistant!"
"I-I can be the backup!" Hermione quickly added after being beaten to it.
Vera curled her lips into a smile. "All right. Then I'll be counting on you two."
The three returned to the castle together, only for Hermione to drag them straight to the library, where they began looking up all sorts of defensive and offensive spells in preparation for the battle.

Chapter 90: A Wife's Ability, a Wife's Glory (Not Really)
"We should make a training list."
Having just found seats in the library, Hermione eagerly took out parchment and a quill and began recording in earnest. "First, we need to master several practical defensive spells..."
Harry leaned over to inspect it. "The Iron Armor Charm? Vera already knows that one."
"Not just that." Hermione wrote quickly. "There's also the Impediment Jinx, the Disarming Charm, the Petrification Spell..."
"Vera knows all of those~" Harry said excitedly, looking rather proud of it herself.
Hermione wordlessly smacked her head away. "Stop talking. Let Vera speak."
Vera gave a light cough. "Rather than myself, I actually want to know what spells Flint is good at."
Harry and Hermione, who had just been quietly discussing things, fell silent at once.
After a while, Hermione stood and walked over to a nearby row of shelves, taking down a book.
"Flint is a fifth-year. He must have learned those basic spells for subduing opponents," she said while flipping through the book titled Complete Guide to Defensive Spells. "For example, the Disarming Charm and the Stunning Spell."
Harry's face twitched as she watched. "Hermione, don't tell me you've already gone through every book in the library during this time?"
Hermione shot her a sidelong glance. "Not quite, but I'm not like someone who uses going to the bathroom as an excuse to slack off every other day."
"...Hehe." Harry gave an embarrassed laugh.
Watching them bicker, Vera held back her amusement and lightly tapped the table, steering the conversation back on track.
"Flint is Slytherin's Quidditch captain, so his stamina must be excellent. We can think along those lines."
Harry frowned and thought for a while. Then, as though something had suddenly occurred to her, her eyes lit up.
"I remember! When Wood was analyzing each opponent's traits for us before, he happened to mention that Flint likes using nasty spells like the Leg-Locker Curse and Densaugeo."
Hermione frowned. "They're all low-class little hexes... but they are indeed practical."
"In other words, he prefers using hexes to interfere with his opponents rather than attacking directly," Vera summarized thoughtfully.
She was not worried that Flint would use anything too excessive. After all, a fifth-year student's abilities were limited, and it was normal for him to be better at these little hexes.
After all, in the original story, when fifth-year Harry formed D.A., most of the older students at the time could not even cast an Iron Armor Charm.
Later on, when the twins opened their joke shop, they also supplied the Ministry of Magic with plenty of Shield Hats, Shield Cloaks, and Shield Gloves.
The purpose of those items was to come with an Iron Armor Charm that could rebound simple hexes—showing that many adult wizards in the Ministry of Magic could not cast any decent defensive spells either.
Of course, that was largely because they were currently living in peacetime. For most wizards, mastering the skills needed for daily life was already enough.
What Vera cared more about was how to use this opportunity to test the upper limit of her strength.
"Then we need to prepare some anti-hex defensive measures." Hermione bit the tip of her quill as she thought. "Are you confident with the corresponding counter-hexes and anti-hexes?"
Anti-hexes prevented hexes from taking effect, while counter-hexes neutralized the effects after a hex had already taken hold.
Vera considered it. "I know a little about them, but I haven't practiced them specifically."
Watching the two of them enthusiastically exchange questions and answers, Harry tried several times to speak but could not get a word in edgewise. She could only stare helplessly from the side.
"I can ask Wood for more information!" Harry finally could not help interrupting them. She leaned forward eagerly. "Maybe we can get more details."
Vera and Hermione turned to look at her at the same time.
Although their gazes made her feel a little guilty, Harry still insisted, "I think it's a good idea."
Since she could not contribute anything here or help much anyway, she might as well do some support work that could actually prove useful.
Sensing a faint note of resentment in her words, Vera raised her brows solemnly. "It is a good idea. Then I'll leave it to you."
Having received Vera's approval, Harry immediately sprang to her feet. "All right, I'm going now!"
Just as she was about to turn away, Vera called out to her again. "Harry."
"What is it?" She turned around immediately. If not for the fact that they were in the library, her voice would probably have risen another octave.
Vera's eyes curved as she said seriously, "Thank you. And... later, just come find us in the abandoned classroom on the fifth floor."
Harry nodded, then finally left the library in satisfaction, heading off with light steps to find Wood.
Watching her hurry away, Vera and Hermione exchanged a glance and could not help smiling.
"She's always like that..." Hermione said with a smile. After writing down several more spells on the parchment, she handed it over.
Vera nodded lightly, her gaze sweeping over the list Hermione had made. "I know some of these spells, but... I lack real combat experience."
"Then we need to make the most of our time practicing." Hermione immediately stood as well and smiled brightly at Vera. "I think sometimes it's nice to have Harry's kind of strong initiative."
Mm, that was true, but your initiative was not lacking either.
Pushed rapidly out of the library by Hermione, Vera even feeling a slight push against her back as the wheelchair sped along, could only grip the armrests tightly and think silently to herself.
Led by Hermione, they soon arrived at the abandoned classroom. Just as described in the original story, many desks and chairs were piled against the walls, and there was also an overturned wastepaper basket.
As for the famous Mirror of Erised, it had not yet appeared here.
According to the timeline, Harry only discovered the mirror by chance during Christmas in the original story, and the Mirror of Erised itself was the final trial Dumbledore had deliberately arranged for Harry.
To prevent other students from discovering it too early and spreading the word, the mirror had not yet been moved in.
And that meant Dumbledore would not be constantly watching this place yet.
Vera secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She pushed her wheelchair to the edge of the classroom and raised a hand to gently touch the surrounding stone bricks.
The moment her fingertips touched the wall, the Magic Circuit activated automatically, producing a subtle resonance with Hogwarts itself.
"We can practice here." Vera withdrew her hand and said to Hermione, "It's quiet here. No one will disturb us."
Even if someone tried to force their way in, Hogwarts would alert her.
Hermione nodded and drew her wand. "Then let's start with anti-hexes."
Although she was only a first-year, Hermione's diligence meant that casting little hexes like the Leg-Locker Curse was no problem for her.
It should be said that every Hogwarts student knew at least a little of this kind of prank spell.

Chapter 91: The Little Otter Needs Comfort Too
To this day, Vera had never truly fought Harry and Hermione in any meaningful sense. Even practice sparring was rare.
There was no other reason. First-year students simply could not cast many useful spells.
Even the Disarming Charm that Harry would become skilled at in the future was unreliable at this stage, working one moment and failing the next. To fully Control it, she might have to wait until next year.
Under those circumstances, no matter how badly Vera wanted sparring partners to grow stronger, she could not keep tormenting her two closest friends.
As for finding other people...
She was not prepared to reveal even this insignificant amount of strength to everyone.
So, after easily blocking several of Hermione's unimpressive little spells without even needing to move her wheelchair, Vera once again realized that perhaps her standards were a little too high.
Especially when she saw Hermione's little face nearly turning red from holding back, Vera felt increasingly uncomfortable.
Wouldn't this be too damaging to the child's self-esteem if it continued?
Just as she was about to push her wheelchair closer to Hermione, a burst of magical energy erupted from the tip of Hermione's wand. "Petrificus Totalus!"
Vera almost instinctively turned her wrist slightly, her wand tracing a perfect arc through the air. "Finite Incantatem."
The invisible magic vanished instantly before it could reach Vera.
Hermione's eyes widened as she stared at the scene in disbelief. "Vera, can you stop making it look so easy every single time?"
Every time, Vera casually dissolved the spell Hermione had worked so hard to cast. After several rounds, Hermione was starting to question her life.
Vera touched her nose somewhat innocently and shrugged. "I just happened to have mastered that spell."
Hermione shook her head dramatically and strode over. "No, it's not just a matter of mastering it. Your reaction speed and casting precision are... you simply don't look like a first-year student."
So that was why she was so unwilling to practice with them...
Vera smiled helplessly. "You know, I have quite a lot of time to practice normally."
"Um..." The rest of Hermione's words caught in her throat.
She looked at Vera's calm expression for a long while before saying sincerely, "No. You're genuinely very talented."
Vera did not deny it. At the very least, being able to rely on the Magic Circuit and receive the enhancement of Ancient Magic already gave her a starting point beyond the reach of many wizards.
She could only push her wheelchair slowly toward Hermione and take her hand. "You're great too, Hermione. Your spellcasting is very standard. You just need more practical experience."
Hermione pursed her lips. "But compared to you, I'm practically a beginner."
"Everyone has their own pace." Vera smiled gently, her eyes curving. "Besides, you're only a first-year. You still have plenty of time to improve."
