Origins and Scale

The sect identifies the Celestial Venerable as its founder; all disciples are regarded as the Celestial Venerable’s successors. The Celestial Venerable Hall’s statue is used to identify spiritual roots, including difficult-to-detect Variant Spiritual Roots 36.

The modern Immortal Dao is the result of eight major reforms since the Celestial Venerable founded the Immortal Sect and established the Nine-Character True Words. Its earliest known sequence was Calamity Endurance, Qi Cultivation, Cultivate the Dao, Ascend to Immortality. Successive disputes and reforms transformed Calamity Endurance into Tribulation Transcendence, Qi Cultivation into Qi Assimilation and later Qi Refinement, and Cultivating the Dao into True Cultivation 395 396.

Its visible cosmic structure is described as “One Palace, Three Courts, Eight Immortal Peaks.” Twelve celestial lights and their accompanying stars form the shape of an immense gate, leading Wang Ping to conclude that the Immortal Sect is far larger than an ordinary terrestrial sect 41.

• The Eight Trigrams Furnace, Divine Farmer Cauldron, and Investiture Altar are the three largest worlds under its rule 158.
• The sect also maintains numerous Blessed Lands and Grotto-Heavens; the highest-grade sanctuaries, Immortal Abodes, are primarily reserved for Third Tribulation Realm True Disciples 158.
• After the Great Rebellion, immortals sealed three former Great Rebellion sites—including the Eight Trigrams Furnace—and repurposed them for their own use 292.
• The Divine Weapons Institute is one of the sect’s three great institutes and appears in deep space as a vast megastructure built around a star 203.
• Immortal Peak of Ultimate Bliss alone contains roughly a thousand outer, inner, and true disciples and is a superplanet of immense scale; its True Disciple areas are protected by defenses that can annihilate unauthorized intruders 159 198.
• The three great academies are associated with the sect’s highest institutions and immortals, though the identities and deeds of most immortals have been obscured by time. Immortal Edicts remain among the few reliable traces of their existence 396.
• A description of the sect’s disciple population gives hundreds of millions of Rogue Cultivators, nearly ten thousand Outer Sect Disciples, nearly a thousand Inner Sect Disciples, and close to a hundred True Disciples. Rankings among the Eight Immortal Peaks do not include the True Disciples of the Three Great Academies 173.
• The sect once possessed more than eight immortal peaks. Repeated Sword Duels and Dao Strifes destroyed or displaced earlier powers, producing the present arrangement 269.
• The academies and peaks are only the sect’s broad institutional framework; an immense number of smaller immortal factions exist beneath them 444.

Cosmic Territory

By the sect’s reckoning, Cosmic Deep Space is divided into the Three Enclosures. Kun Yun describes the Immortal Sect as the strongest major power, dominating nearly three-sixths of the cosmos, compared with the Brahma Kingdom’s two-sixths and the remaining sixth occupied by assorted ancient lineages 374.

Historical Fire Qi Ascendancy

The Fire Qi Dao Lineage once expected to establish a fourth academy after one of its great figures attained immortality. Instead, that immortal chose independence, drawing many people away from the sect and damaging the higher-level trigram order. Fire Qi itself also suffered damage to the Li Trigram, which helped spare the lineage from destruction; nevertheless, it was expelled from Purple Tenuity and stationed in Supreme Tenuity beside the Brahma Kingdom 391.

Later accounts distinguish the Fire Qi Immortal from the Living Buddha. The Fire Qi Immortal repeatedly benefited from successive transformations of the Immortal Dao and eliminated rival systems, including traditions represented by Assimilation and Principle. After Qi Refinement defeated Qi Assimilation and Fire Qi attained immortality, the Living Buddha emerged and established the Brahma Kingdom. The two immortals eventually fought, suffered grievous injuries, and departed the world before the Great Rebellion occurred 461 462.

The Fire Qi Immortal’s name, title, and deeds vanished from mortal records upon attainment of immortality, leaving even defeated contemporaries unable to remember them clearly 462.

Power Progression

Hierarchy

The sect’s disciple ranks do not form a simple ladder based solely on cultivation. True Disciples possess complete inheritances and resources that distinguish them sharply from Inner Sect Disciples of the same combat realm. At the time of Wang Ping’s challenge, the ten highest-ranked True Disciples were all in the Third Tribulation Realm, while eleventh-ranked Quan Zhenhong was effectively the strongest remaining Divine Ability cultivator 93 270 273.

Academies and Immortal Peaks

These affiliations describe the dominant lineages of institutional leaders, not exclusive requirements for every resident. Kun Yun cultivated Wood Qi while previously living under the Divine Weapons Institute’s jurisdiction, illustrating the overlap between institutional and elemental allegiances 374.

Cultivation System

Spiritual roots determine access to this system:

• True Spiritual Roots offer a genuine path toward longevity and higher cultivation 36.
• Defective Spiritual Roots allow spell cultivation but are said to offer no hope of Qi Refinement or the Great Dao; their bearers are commonly employed as laborers, Force Servitors, or Daoist generals 37.
• Defective Spiritual Roots can be artificially cultivated. Dragon-Raising Peak’s Six Desires Heaven’s Free Attainment Method is one such means, combining six Desire Beasts within the body 37 63.
• The sect restricts crucial knowledge, including the correspondence between cultivation methods and the Twenty-Four Qi of Heaven and Earth, making advancement difficult for lower-ranked cultivators 147.
• Divine Abilities must harmonize with a cultivator’s affiliated Heaven-and-Earth Qi. The sect’s Qi Count system lets cultivators compete on behalf of their Qi, with victories strengthening their Dao path and granting guidance toward suitable Divine Abilities 153.
• The present Tribulation Transcendence system emerged from the historical conflict between Tribulation Transformation and Tribulation Breaking, which were eventually synthesized into a single orthodox path 395.

The sect’s cultivation fundamentally pursues Truth: cultivators seek to make themselves increasingly real, summarized by Wang Ping as “All things are false; I alone am true.” This differs from the Brahma Kingdom’s cultivation of Rank. At higher levels, Borrow the False to Cultivate the True allows a cultivator to approach the reality obscured by ordinary perception, forming the basis of True Cultivation and the True Person’s path 94 111 373.

Fate and Merit Deeds operate throughout this system. A Life Tribulation provides both enemies and potential helpers, but the cultivator must identify and secure those helpers rather than receive their aid automatically. Wang Ping’s later tribulation demonstrates that even apparent enemies among upper cultivators can occupy the role of potential allies 214 449.

Governance and Resources

Human Resources

The Immortal Sect’s lower hierarchy is built on labor, bodies, and debt.

• In Northern Liao, it holds the right to levy a “death tax”: corpses are surrendered through state-supported Sky Burial practices. Wang Ping concludes that these bodies are used as materials for Force Servitors 36.
• Force Servitors can be produced in furnaces, delivered to disciples, and controlled through loyalty-imposing seals 5.
• In the Eight Trigrams Furnace, lower-ranked cultivators and mortals are treated as Human Firewood and disposable resources 125 327.
• Rogue Cultivators may need to purchase employment under True Disciples with Incense Dharma Coins, often accepting debt to gain access to stable positions 63.
• Inner Sect Disciples without True Spiritual Roots are commonly retained as Dao-protecting military assets. Their long lives and lack of a Qi Refinement future make them especially expendable in high-level conflicts 325 326.
• Xuan Yin’s earlier Corpse Immortal Sect encouraged its followers to refine corpses and pursue collective ascension. Their eventual “ascension” consisted of the entire sect being refined into a Grotto-Heaven and collected into Xuan Yin’s treasure pouch 160.
• Orthodox subordinate lineages can also manufacture suffering to obtain resources. Iron City Mountain’s cultivators describe arranging famines, collecting the dead as corpse-refinement materials, and receiving incense and merit under the guise of providing salvation 134.

Commerce and Corruption

• Heaven and Earth Pavilion is a True Disciple faction involved in reselling Immortal Sect assets. It profits from magical treasures smuggled out of the Eight Trigrams Furnace and from laundering Incense Dharma Coins 126.
• Daoist Xuan He founded Book Mountain within the Eight Trigrams Furnace before ascending as an Outer Sect Disciple. Wang Ping suspects its “ascension” system is used to export Natal Flying Swords and accumulated incense from the Furnace 93 125.
• Cultivators frequently exploit institutional loopholes. The sect requires evidence before acting against suspected Marauder Cultivators, allowing disciples to hide behind disguises and technicalities 170.
• Alchemy, artifact refinement, formations, and talismans are the Four Arts of Cultivation. Beyond generating profit, they are necessary to construct and maintain complete Grotto-Heaven Paradises 171.
• Even purportedly orthodox institutions treat inheritances, positions, debts, bodies, and Divine Abilities as transactional resources. This system helps drive impoverished Rogue Cultivators toward Marauder Cultivation 63 64 65.
• Heaven and Earth Pavilion’s extensive holdings can be mobilized or liquidated for its founder’s personal needs. Kun Yun’s preparations for his Life Tribulation trigger widespread sales of Blessed Lands and withdrawals of stored spiritual materials 218.

Factional Authority

The sect is not a unified administrative body. Immortal Talisman describes its academies and peaks as institutions that each “eat from their own pot,” while Kun Yun explicitly characterizes the organization as a loose alliance. Institutional allegiance, personal patronage, and shared cultivation interests can outweigh hostility to a rebel or loyalty to the sect as a whole 268 374.

This fragmentation allows figures such as Kunlun and the Heaven-Stealing Thief to survive open departures from the sect. It also permits Immortal Talisman to aid Wang Ping against other sect cultivators while presenting that assistance as consistent with the Immortal Formula Institute’s interests 268.

Patronage remains conditional on usefulness. Wang Ping recognizes that both Mingyou and the Water Qi True Lord require him to demonstrate value before granting meaningful recognition and protection. The Water Qi True Lord’s arrangements eventually lead him into contact with Fire Qi and culminate in recognition through the Misguided Peril Merit Deed 385 392.

Crisis Management

Daoist Xuan He calls the sect’s habitual response to institutional failure the Immortal Sect Four-Step Process 125:

1. Declare that nothing has happened.
2. Admit that something may have happened, but insist that it remains controlled and requires no action.
3. Acknowledge that action might be necessary, while arguing that events have already progressed too far for intervention to help.
4. Once investigators arrive, concede that something might have been done earlier and accept punishment.

Xuan He claims that most failures never progress beyond the first step. The Heaven-Stealing Thief affair is the only case he knows to have reached the fourth, reportedly alarming even the immortals of the Three Great Academies 125.

Control of Great Shun

Great Shun functions as the Immortal Sect’s “white glove.” The sect uses the Weapon Ranking and the Fate-Gazing Flesh-Bone Mirror to monitor martial artists, guide selected fighters toward Grandmasterhood, exhaust their Fate, and recover their Divine Weapons after death 125.

This system was disrupted when the Martial Dao Chief rose outside the Weapon Ranking’s surveillance and elevated Great Shun’s martial arts beyond the sect’s expected limits 125.

The dynasty is also tied directly to sect politics. Its founding emperor became a Corpse-Liberated Immortal connected to the Immortal Formula Institute, while Immortal Talisman later seized the throne through an ancient karmic connection to the founder’s decree 197 260.

• Under Immortal Talisman’s rule, Force Servitors replaced the Imperial Guards, City God Temples exposed corruption, and Unified Immortal-Mortal Taxation extended state obligations to cultivators as well as mortals 261.
• Great Shun’s National Fortune became an essential resource in the Immortal-Brahma Sword Duel, enabling enfeoffments, territorial warfare, and the contest for Earth Hearths and Human Firewood 260 295.
• The Great Shun Founder was eventually killed by Kun Yun’s Qi Refinement thunder, ending his remaining claim over Gongshun Grotto-Heaven and the True Lord’s handwritten decree that had protected him 381.

The dynasty’s apparent political and religious divisions also conceal competing sect interests. You Xuexin and the Imperial Academy represent the Divine Weapons Institute’s artifact-refinement scheme, while Liansheng Bodhisattva, the White Lotus Sect, and the emperor are connected to the Immortal Formula Institute’s pill-refinement alternative. Wang Ping concludes that the rivalry was arranged so that either outcome would produce the desired lifespan-extending resource 85.

By the construction of the false inheritance realm, Great Gan stands behind Immortal Talisman. Its state apparatus can search mountains and seas for spiritual materials, providing enough mid- and low-grade resources to construct several Grotto-Heavens and comfortably supply the secret-realm project 401.

Military and Defensive Assets

• Heaven’s Will Wields the Profound Blade — a Spirit Treasure suspended above the Eight Trigrams Furnace. It acts as a sect-level defensive weapon and can target unauthorized high-level cultivators within the Furnace 158 231.
• Force Servitor armies — True Disciples can field enormous formations of refined servants. Shuntianzi’s Myriad Chariots Banner of Armored Soldiers contains over a million Force Servitors, including divine-general-level units 270.
• Grotto-Heavens and Blessed Lands — privately held cultivation territories that can strengthen their owners in battle and generate resources 158.
• Spirit Treasures — weapons and artifacts comparable in status to Qi Refiners; their control is a major source of power within the sect 159.
• National Fortune and enfeoffments — True Disciples such as Immortal Talisman can convert dynastic authority, ruler-minister bonds, and invested offices into combat strength and Dao-political leverage 257 260.
• Prove-the-Dao Mountain — a True Person’s Grotto-Heaven spread across much of the Immortal Sect, which extracts immense Qi Count from challengers and covers nearly every one of the Twenty-Four Qi Dao paths 243.
• Aura-analysis Spirit Treasure — True Insight Immortal Peak possesses a treasure that can trace an aura’s origin, potentially exposing a Dharma Consort despite concealment. Its other duties prevent casual use, and an investigation requires a request from a Qi Refiner of considerable standing 215.
• Heaven-Solemn Time-Killing Edict — used by a True Person to bind the Tianshuang Grotto to the Northern Crimson-Net Golden Pure Land, preventing it from hiding and creating a trap in which either the Pure Land’s collapse or the deaths of its cultivators would bring the Grotto into the world 358.

Furnace Guardian

Heaven’s Will Wields the Profound Blade is not merely an impersonal enforcement mechanism. Wang Ping meets its saber spirit at the Saber-Washing Pool in Great Gan’s Jiangnan Circuit and secures its cooperation in the false-inheritance ambush. The spirit agrees to attack the Qi Refiners after they have been injured inside the concealed realm and offers to let Wang Ping wield her if he becomes a Corpse-Liberated Immortal 402.

The saber spirit also instructs Wang Ping to collect the auras of all ten Great Rebellion Spirit Treasures before entering the Heaven-Reversing Palace. Its later-clarified status is that of a guardian Immortal Official appointed by an immortal, placing its authority above that of an ordinary disciple-controlled weapon 402 467.

Immortal Realms and Upper-Level Power

The Divine Weapons Institute’s central sun contains an Immortal Realm, with bright and dark aspects and an outward entrance to the Plain Practice Realm. Qi Refiners seldom approach it, while a Dao Scion such as Tian Xing can enter directly 451.

Upper cultivators possess capabilities that also affect how their interventions are remembered. After the Water Qi True Lord withdraws from the Sword-Dueling Battlefield, most ordinary sect and Brahma cultivators forget who intervened, while True Persons, True Lords, Arhats, and bodhisattvas retain their memories 358.

True Persons and True Lords are exceptionally difficult to kill permanently. A destroyed power may return from the depths of time, and the reappearance of a lost Dao tradition can signal the return of a practitioner at least at the True Person level 269.

Major Factions and Members

• Celestial Venerable — acknowledged founder of the Immortal Sect and originator of its Nine-Character True Words 36 395.
• You Xuexin / Daoist Nun You — True Disciple associated with Bliss Peak and the Divine Weapons Institute; initially employs Wang Ping as an attendant and later remains linked to him through the Nondual Emptiness-Bliss Dharma Consort Talisman 38 85 184.
• Liansheng Yue / Liansheng Bodhisattva — white-robed second True Disciple associated with the Immortal Formula Institute; a rival of You Xuexin in the struggle over lifespan-refining schemes 84 85.
• Mingyou — Qi Refiner and You Xuexin’s master; a major strategist in the struggle over Wood Qi and the Eight Trigrams Furnace 159 231. He remains involved in the later Heaven-Reversing Palace conflict. His earlier refusal to associate with Fire Qi’s demonic cultivators and subsequent refuge under Light-Holding are later revealed as important parts of his factional history 443 444 464.
• Daoist Xuan He — Book Mountain’s founder and a Furnace-Watching Disciple tied to Heaven and Earth Pavilion’s smuggling operations 125 126.
• Kun Yun — fifth True Disciple and founder of Heaven and Earth Pavilion; he later attains Qi Refinement and becomes an important ally of the Mystic One Daoist Scion 218 373. His fifth-place ranking applies to the Eight Immortal Peaks rather than the Three Great Academies 173. Wang Ping later shifts responsibility for numerous crimes onto him, making him a target across the sect and encouraging him to seek opportunities in the Burial-Star Sand Sea 452.
• Immortal Talisman — third True Disciple, ruler of Great Shun under an ancient karmic claim, and presider over the Immortal-Brahma Sword Duel. He seeks to restore Human-Yang Wood to the Heavenly-Earthly Order while pursuing his own sovereign Dao 256 260 282.
• Kunlun / Ye Chao — Immortal Talisman’s martial minister and a former Furnace prisoner who changed to the Earth-Yang Fire Dao Path. His attempts to eradicate Earth-Yang Fire became central to later sect-wide conflict 257 337.
• Gan Wujia / Heaven-Stealing Thief — wanted Third Tribulation Realm rebel cultivator whose Five Thieves Stealing Heaven Method threatens sect authority while exploiting its divisions. As the Immortal Usurper, he unifies Destiny Form, merit, and cultivation to rival a True Person’s incarnation 87 338 339. He was formerly the sect’s foremost True Disciple, and his Heaven-Reversing Palace opportunities helped him gain the ability to participate in Qi Refiner-level affairs before his betrayal during his third Life Tribulation 334 382.
• Profound Firmament Responsive-Origin True Person — a major True Person connected to Immortal Talisman’s enfeoffment system and the plan to use Human-Yang Wood to preserve the Wood Qi Dao path 325 336.
• Light-Holding Cinnabar Sun True Person / True Lord Light-Holding Danyang — a hidden power behind major Eight Trigrams Furnace schemes whose interventions affect Wang Ping, the Sword Duel, and the wider conflict over Qi lineages 259 295. Formerly an Immortal Realm Dao Scion backed by a True Lord, he was an unusually formidable True Cultivator among his peers. He later becomes a True Lord and occupies the Ultimate Position 464.
• Chaos Profound Unity Primordial Sovereign — the Water Qi True Lord associated with the Spirit Transformation Realm and Wang Ping’s status as the Mystic One Daoist Scion 373.
• Wang Ping / Battle Victor / Mystic One Daoist Scion — initially enters the sect through Force Servitor and Rogue Cultivator identities, is later accepted as a third True Disciple, and ultimately becomes the Water Qi Dao lineage’s recognized Daoist Scion. • Ming De — Fire Qi cultivator who explains the history of the Immortal Dao’s eight transformations and participates in the Water–Fire operation surrounding the Heaven-Reversing Palace 395 396.
• Tian Xing — Immortal Realm Dao Scion associated with the Divine Weapons Institute who can enter its central sun and the Plain Practice Realm 451 464.
• True Lord Zhaoxuan Jinming — Fire Qi True Lord cast, together with his Immortal Realm, into the depths of the True Realm by the Immortal Edict released during the Ancient Cultivators’ confrontation. His expected absence for hundreds or thousands of years severely weakens Fire Qi’s position in the current Dao Strife 467.

Conflicts

Heaven-Stealing Thief

The Heaven-Stealing Thief spreads cultivation methods that can grant instant mastery but turn users into nourishment for his own path. The Immortal Sect considers his followers dangerous “tribulation cultivators,” yet has failed to capture him despite his notoriety and suspected ties to True Disciples 38 41 170.

Although officially a rebel, Gan Wujia has repeatedly formed temporary alliances with Immortal Talisman and Wang Ping when their interests align. His Technique-Stealing Thief can combine multiple cultivators beneath a shared identity, while Immortal Usurper can imitate, disrupt, and overcome stronger opponents’ profundities 258 338 339.

His freely distributed methods create a network of practitioners who can hide within the sect and assume Marauder Cultivator identities to seize resources. Their appeal extends beyond impoverished disciples: even recipients of orthodox teachings covet the techniques’ speed and versatility 38 40 167.

The Five Thieves techniques can block soul searches, undermining an important means by which senior cultivators previously enforced hierarchy. Once disguised Inner Sect Disciples could conceal their responsibility for attacking True Disciples, the sect’s older disciplinary order weakened considerably 173 248.

Great Rebellion

The Great Rebellion destroyed portions of the Six Heavens’ Ancient Qi and left behind cave abodes, merit, and unresolved political consequences. The sect later transformed former rebellion sites into controlled worlds, while powerful factions seek to restore or replace the lost Qi paths 292 322.

The Rebellion’s surviving merit and symbols remain active political weapons. Its former estates, Spirit Treasures, ancient inheritances, and restrictions on high-level interference continue to shape the Eight Trigrams Furnace’s Fate and the conflict over Wood Qi 295 401.

During the Rebellion era, the Five-Thunder Divine Firmament Palace, supported by True Lords, conducted a vast campaign centered on the Eight Trigrams Furnace. Numerous subordinate immortal factions had their holdings confiscated, households exterminated, mountains felled, and temples destroyed 444.

Water Qi’s alliance with the Great Rebellion grievously harmed the other four elemental lineages and led to its condemnation as a Demonic Path and relocation to Heavenly Market Tenuity. This history remains a source of distrust even when individual Water Qi cultivators cooperate with other sect factions 391 420 443.

Powerful House-Guardian Immortals can form as Aberrations after Great Rebellion Merit shatters. The Heavenly Craft Cave Abode contains the dormant Dragon-Pressing Immortal, linking the old rebellion’s residue to threats that remain within its sealed estates 456.

Immortal-Brahma Sword Duel

The Immortal-Brahma Sword Duel is a recurring conflict between the Immortal Sect and the Brahma Kingdom. It contests Heavenly Estates, Earth Hearths, and Human Firewood, while also serving as a Life Tribulation and merit opportunity for True Disciples 259 295.

The contest eventually escalates beyond a formal duel into a wider Dao conflict involving True Disciples, Corpse-Liberated Immortals, Spirit Treasures, and True Persons 282.

The duel reenacts the Great Rebellion to lure the lost Six Heavens’ Former Estates and their Heaven-and-Earth Qi back into the world. It consequently became a battlefield for competing plans to restore Human-Yang Wood, Earth-Yang Wood, and the future of the Wood Qi Dao path 295 337.

Its nominal format is a clash between Second Layer Tribulation Transcendence disciples, with Third Tribulation Realm disciples supporting them. The involvement of multiple True Persons and an ancient True Lord therefore represents an extraordinary escalation beyond its stated scope 342.

Post-Duel Dao Strife

The death of a Brahma Arhat and Wang Ping’s rise as the Mystic One Daoist Scion intensify the threat of another Dao Strife between the Immortal Sect, the Brahma Kingdom, and rival Qi Refiners 373.

Water and Fire Qi factions subsequently prepare to use an ancient Dao Lord as bait to lure and eliminate the Brahma Kingdom’s Lord of Esoteric Traces. This scheme is linked to the Heaven-Reversing Palace, surviving practitioners of discarded cultivation systems, and the possibility of “Borrow the False to Cultivate the True” 395 396.

The Water Qi True Lord uses Wang Ping’s apparent pursuit by the Brahma Kingdom and rescue by Lian Ruzhao to conceal contact with Fire Qi. Wang Ping’s Life Tribulation masks the coordination through Fate, while the Brahma Kingdom has reason to tolerate the deception because further sect infighting benefits it 392.

Later developments show that these alignments are not fixed. During the contest involving Wang Ping and the Profound Arts Supreme Dao Lord, a True Person shields Wang Ping from Fire Qi interference, while the Lord of Esoteric Traces briefly refrains from attacking in order to exploit the distraction. Wang Ping identifies two True Lords and one True Person as potential helpers within his Life Tribulation, despite their apparent hostility 448 449.

Heaven-Reversing Palace

The Heaven-Reversing Palace becomes a major point of convergence for the sect’s elemental lineages and upper cultivators. As it approaches the Burial-Star Sand Sea, Qi Refiners and cultivation-ground leaders gather around newly emerging sites such as the Fragrant Drapery Hall 438.

Wang Ping subsequently secures Ancient Cultivator support to construct Virtuous Grotto-Heaven and Bright City around the Palace. Grave Star blocks alternative routes, allowing his Grotto-Heaven to control access. Wang Ping explicitly intends to exact substantial tolls from the Immortal Sect, whose lineages are all maneuvering around the Palace. The project demonstrates that access to a strategically important inheritance can be used to extract resources from the sect despite its overall superiority 455.

Ancient Cultivators’ Renewed Dao Strife

The Ancient Cultivators’ Dao Cultivation Tradition consists of survivors of discarded Immortal Dao systems. Although its eight Dao Lords differ in doctrine and have previously fought one another, they share opposition to the modern sect. Assimilation describes their conflict with it as an unfinished Dao Strife under a temporary truce rather than a settled peace 462 465.

The sect gradually suppresses these survivors while they remain concentrated in the Burial-Star Sand Sea. Their dependence on Grave Star as a deterrent and their low profile allow upper sect cultivators to underestimate them. Nurturing and Assimilation therefore decide that a major battle is necessary to restore credibility and prevent the tradition from declining into extinction 462 465 467.

Their coalition nevertheless contains divisions. Principle, Disaster, and Transformation favor the Great Rebellion’s return and attach particular importance to the Human Sovereign. Their priorities can conflict with Wang Ping’s interests and with the plans of other Ancient Cultivators 462.

Wang Ping recognizes that deterrence must not become a general war. The Ancient Cultivators can exploit the sect’s internal divisions to preserve independence, but cannot withstand its united strength. If his connection to the Dao pioneer provokes a full sect response, he believes they would have no viable choice but to surrender him 466.

The confrontation culminates in the release of an Immortal Edict hidden within Grave Star. Calamity reveals that he had accepted an immortal’s commission to guard the star, sustain it with Qi of Decline, and bear its karma in exchange for preserving his tradition. The edict casts Calamity, True Lord Zhaoxuan Jinming, and the latter’s entire Immortal Realm into the depths of the True Realm. Observing upper cultivators judge that their return will be impossible for hundreds or thousands of years, effectively removing a Fire Qi True Lord from the current struggle 467.
