Background / History

Kun Yun was the fifth-ranked True Disciple of the Immortal Sect's Eight Immortal Peak and the founder of the Heaven and Earth Pavilion 173 218. Secretly, he operated a corrupt network using the Eight Trigrams Furnace through his subordinate Xuan He to smuggle magical treasures, launder Dharma Coins, and support illicit business 126. For five hundred years, he manipulated the fate of his talented junior brother, Kunlun, using the Fate-Gazing Flesh-Bone Mirror to weaken Kunlun's reincarnated body out of fear that Kunlun would survive his Life Tribulation and surpass him 127.

His fifth-place ranking applied specifically to the True Disciples of Eight Immortal Peak, excluding those of the Three Great Academies. He belonged to Profound Changes Immortal Peak, while his master and the backing behind the Heaven and Earth Pavilion came from the Divine Weapons Institute. Unlike True Disciples with exceptional origins, Kun Yun had been born a mortal and possessed no comparable inherited connections 173 174 197 258. He was also rumored to have killed a Brahma Kingdom True Disciple during the previous Immortal-Brahma Sword Duel 173.

When his own Life Tribulation approached, Kun Yun acted with extreme caution. The figures who initially confronted Wang Ping, Xuan He, and You Xuexin were only strands of his Divine Sense, while his true body remained secluded in a storm-filled gaseous star to preserve strength and Qi Count 186. After becoming suspicious that Kunlun and the Heaven-Stealing Thief were connected to his tribulation, he appointed Xuan Yin as the new Furnace-Watching Disciple and ordered him to change the furnace environment from Clear Heaven, Bright Earth to Turbid Earth, Dim Heaven, intending to suppress Kunlun's Heavenly Yang Fire 186.

Kun Yun used Xuan Yin as expendable bait. Once Xuan Yin entered the altered furnace environment, Kun Yun refined his body, Divine Abilities, and Grotto-Heaven into a temporary incarnation for his Divine Sense 210. Although this incarnation was ultimately defeated by Wang Ping within the Earth-Bearing Myriad Gods Diagram, Kun Yun learned that Wang Ping, You Xuexin, Kunlun, and the Heaven-Stealing Thief were linked to a larger conspiracy surrounding his Life Tribulation 210 214.

Before entering the tribulation, Kun Yun dismantled the Heaven and Earth Pavilion, liquidated its resources, secretly safeguarded Yuan Chengsong with half of its accumulated wealth, and recruited the aging Third Tribulation cultivator Xuanlong Zi as an ally 218. He also secured Mingyou's aid by promising to restore the Gourd of Longevity Equal to Heaven with Great Shun's Destiny 216.

Kun Yun entered the Eight Trigrams Furnace to undergo his Life Tribulation, confronting the Brahma Kingdom, the Great Shun Founder, Mingyou, Kunlun, and other hidden schemers 219 220. He overcame Kunlun in their direct confrontation, but Kunlun's deliberate death severed their karma and allowed the Heaven-Stealing Thief to transfer Kunlun's Sun-Supporting Crow Destiny Form to Wang Ping 221 222. Kun Yun then recognized Wang Ping as the true focal point of his tribulation 222.

The furnace environment Kun Yun had arranged subsequently worked against him: Turbid Earth, Dim Heaven suppressed his Heavenly Yang Wood while favoring Wang Ping's Earthly Yin Water. When Kun Yun used the Chronicle of the Immortals' final permitted activation to curse Wang Ping, the Six Directions Eternal-Suppression Cauldron intervened. Wang Ping shattered his defenses and Destiny Form, but a Thousand Gold Buys a Life talisman purchased from Xuanlong Zi saved him 225.

During his final conflict with Wang Ping, Kun Yun discovered that Mingyou and the Great Shun Founder had manipulated both men into a Qi Count struggle designed to damage Wood Qi and further Mingyou's lifespan-related scheme 227 229. Refusing to become a Corpse-Liberated Immortal, Kun Yun burned his body, Dharma Power, and Divine Sense through the Transmuting Immortal Ascension Mystic Art in a final attempt to Enter the Dao through Qi Refinement 230. Though his Jade Hornless Dragon Destiny Form was destroyed and he was believed dead, he later returned as a Qi Refiner 230 373.

At the brink of death, his understanding of Wood Qi's connection to longevity brought the source symbolizing Qi Refinement closer within the torrent of Fate, but his remaining strength was insufficient to reach it. Wang Ping then used the Peace Scripture to further diminish Wood Qi's standing, bringing that source within reach. Before his visible disappearance, Kun Yun promised to repay Wang Ping if he succeeded in entering the Dao 230 231. His eventual return helped dislodge the Great Rebellion identity and Merit Deeds from Wang Ping, allowing them to pass to Immortal Talisman 362.

After attaining Qi Refinement, Kun Yun sought revenge against the Great Shun Founder for the Life Tribulation and attacked Gongshun Grotto-Heaven 377. His former master Tian Xing subsequently treated him as an estranged equal rather than a disciple, claiming that Kun Yun had abandoned orthodox cultivation for a demonic path 382. Kun Yun later served as an envoy bearing a True Lord's oral decree to Wang Ping, where he acknowledged that Wang Ping had surpassed him in direct combat 410.

During the campaign against Gongshun Grotto-Heaven, Kun Yun cooperated with Wang Ping under the True Lord's arrangement. Wang Ping persuaded him to delay their initial attack after sensing danger, and they intercepted a Dao Practitioner from Contemplation Constant Realm who had come to reclaim the Great Shun Founder's protective handwritten decree. Kun Yun subsequently confronted the Xuanxiao Saintess, rejecting her attempt to address him as a fellow disciple now that he was a Qi Refiner. With Wang Ping using the Great Shun Founder's Merit Deeds to assist him, Kun Yun finally killed the founder in a single move 375 376 377 381.

Kun Yun later deliberately withdrew his Divine Sense from Wang Ping, allowing Life-Slayer, an Ascetic Monk serving the Lord of Esoteric Traces, to abduct him. He understood the ordeal as a test arranged by Chaos Profound Unity Primordial Sovereign and believed Wang Ping's rare treasure would prevent his death 385. After Wang Ping returned and helped arrange the deaths of six Qi Refiners, Kun Yun feared retaliation. Yun Long nevertheless sent him to deliver a Supreme True Lord's spoken decree, and Wang Ping and his allies beat him before allowing him to announce his message. Kun Yun regarded the beating as settling the earlier grievance 407 410.

Wang Ping subsequently used Kun Yun's appearance as a disguise in the Dao Tomb, employing the Dragon Smoke Wood arrow to imitate Wood Qi 435. During the Fragrant Drapery Hall affair, Wang Ping constructed a narrative in which “Kun Yun” had attacked Hengxu, killed Chang Jing and other cultivators, betrayed Spirit Transformation, and seized a major inheritance. These were uses of Kun Yun's identity and karmic framing, rather than deeds established as the real Kun Yun's actions. The Chronicle of the Immortals nevertheless traced the relevant karma to his name, while discerning cultivators such as Mingyou recognized Wang Ping's involvement 439 441 442 452.

Meanwhile, Kun Yun remained confined in the Heavenly Craft Cave Abode for nearly a year. When Wang Ping finally released him, he demanded compensation and received the modified Vibrant-Scale Heavenly-Thunder Scripture, along with promises of a Spirit Treasure and secret artifacts from Great Rebellion's legacy. Wang Ping urged him to seek opportunities among the Ancient Cultivators in the Burial-Star Sand Sea, but Kun Yun initially refused 452.

After leaving the cave abode, Kun Yun examined Fate and discovered that the karmic blame for numerous crimes had been attached to him. Other Qi Refiners' divinations identified him with attacks on Hengxu, the deaths of Chang Jing and Jinghua, the injury of Ruiyi, and the trap at Fragrant Drapery Hall. Rumors increasingly conflated him with the Water Qi Spirit Transformation Dao Son, turning him into a widely denounced figure despite his innocence of those acts. Realizing that Wang Ping had made remaining in the Immortal Sect difficult, he regretted accepting so little compensation and reconsidered the Burial-Star Sand Sea proposal 452.

Wang Ping later personally cast a Great Divine Ability that allowed Kun Yun to move and act throughout the Immortal Sect without fear of discovery. He also delivered the Thirty-Six Thunder Tokens, Dao-Proclaiming Brush, and Altar Thunder Pool. Kun Yun accepted them but understood that the treasures carried dangerous complications 456.

Appearance

Kun Yun is described as having dark, deep eyes resembling a demon-revealing mirror, and he walks with an effortless stride where the earth spontaneously shortens beneath his feet 172 173. After attaining Qi Refinement, he appears as a handsome young man whose eyes carry reflected thunder and whose breath bears a faint rumble 373.

Personality

Kun Yun is calculating, ruthless, highly intelligent, and deeply insecure about his status relative to his more talented peers, particularly Kunlun 127. He relies heavily on preemptive violence, viewing subordinates and allies as disposable chess pieces or bait 174 186. His Life Tribulation made him especially suspicious: he followed the principle of killing suspected threats first and finding justification afterward 174.

Despite his cynical manipulation, Kun Yun possesses immense pride, courage, and a resolute refusal to take the easy path of a Corpse-Liberated Immortal, choosing instead to stake everything on genuine Dao attainment 214 229. He is capable of reassessing his enemies and allies when presented with new information, as shown when he and Wang Ping recognized that both had been deceived by Mingyou and the Great Shun Founder 227. After becoming a Qi Refiner, he remains conscious of Wang Ping's exceptional growth and is unsettled by having been surpassed 410.

His flexibility in ordinary dealings protects an underlyingly inflexible Dao heart. During his final charge in the Life Tribulation, he acknowledged regret and despair but refused to let either turn him away from the Dao 230. His pragmatism also permits conspicuous displays of humility when useful: he sincerely respected Tian Xing, yet could immediately shift from tearful complaints to calm negotiation when seeking assistance 203.

Kun Yun is not entirely without affection. He explicitly distinguished noncompetitive relationships, such as his bond with Yuan Chengsong, from his rivalry with Kunlun 218. When told of Kunlun's later fate, he spoke at length with apparent disdain for his junior brother's choices and the Heaven-Stealing Thief's influence, then apologized for losing his composure 373.

His time dealing with Wang Ping made him more evasive and wary. Yun Long noted that the initially grateful, frank, and bold Kun Yun had begun shirking and scheming after accompanying the Water Qi Dao Son 407. Even so, Mingyou considered his firm Dao heart more exceptional than his scheming, judging that he could not plausibly have outmaneuvered Wang Ping as the Fragrant Drapery Hall story claimed 442. Kun Yun's later fury at being framed was accompanied by practical bargaining: after discovering the scale of the damage to his reputation, he regretted asking for too little compensation and reconsidered leaving for the Burial-Star Sand Sea 452.

Their old karmic conflict ended when Kunlun deliberately died, severed his ties to Kun Yun, and began a new path as Ye Chao 222 237. Kun Yun later reacted emotionally to news of Kunlun's fate, blaming the Heaven-Stealing Thief for leading him astray and lamenting his haste 373.
• Wang Ping — Initially an underestimated pawn and later the true target of Kun Yun's Life Tribulation 222 224. After being surpassed by Wang Ping, Kun Yun considered asking Tian Xing how he had maintained his state of mind while living in the same era as Mingyou 410.
• Mingyou — Aging Qi Refiner whose aid Kun Yun obtained by offering to restore the Gourd of Longevity Equal to Heaven using Great Shun's Destiny 216. Kun Yun later realized that Mingyou had helped engineer his Qi Count struggle with Wang Ping for a hidden lifespan-related scheme 227 229. Mingyou later recognized that the supposed Kun Yun behind the Fragrant Drapery Hall scheme could not plausibly be the real man 442.
• Xuanlong Zi — An aging Third Tribulation cultivator recruited by Kun Yun as an ally for the Life Tribulation. • Great Shun Founder — Cultivator of the same Heavenly Yang Wood Qi and a principal enemy in Kun Yun's Life Tribulation. After returning as a Qi Refiner, Kun Yun destroyed his refuge and killed him with Wang Ping's assistance 203 229 377 381.
