Background

Mingyou is an ancient Qi Refiner who resides at Sun-Moon Lake on Immortal Peak of Ultimate Bliss. Though he appears as a young Daoist, he had been nearing the end of his lifespan and pursued longevity with overriding urgency. His cultivation environment is lethal to ordinary Tribulation Transcendence cultivators until he deliberately suppresses its spiritual pressure. 216

He originated in the mortal world rather than an immortal lineage. Before entering the Dao through Qi Refinement, he deliberately delayed his breakthrough to obtain the Merit Deed associated with surviving eight Life Tribulations. By his own account, each tribulation was more difficult than the last, but he emerged unrivaled among his Qi Refinement peers, defeating even direct disciples of True Lords. 228 321

When You Xuexin was killed, Mingyou crossed the heavens on auspicious clouds and arrived within three breaths. Using the Heaven-Reversing Sun-Dial Instrument, he reversed time to restore Xuexin, the thieves, her body, and her soul; however, he could not recover the causality erased by the Five Thieves Stealing Heaven Method. He executed the thieves once they proved useless, destroyed the incomplete Life-Stealing Thief talisman, and ordered Xuexin to resume guarding the Eight Trigrams Furnace. 44

Mingyou later accepted Kun Yun’s offer to restore the Gourd of Longevity Equal to Heaven in exchange for assistance during Kun Yun’s Life Tribulation. He secretly cooperated with Great Shun Founder Shunhe, staging their apparent conflict within the Eight Trigrams Furnace while arranging circumstances that damaged Wood Qi. 216 228 The scheme restored 365 years of Mingyou’s lifespan and renewed his hope of reaching the True Person realm. 232

His ability to target Wood Qi so precisely depended on a True Lord’s secret that he had recovered through extensive study of ancient texts and other methods. Although his principal cultivation was Fire Qi, knowledge of that secret caused cultivation associated with Wood Qi to seek him out. 229

The restoration of lifespan was only one part of Mingyou’s long-term pursuit of true cultivation. Across thousands of years, he interfered with the inheritance of the Purple-Green Tusita Fire, Martial Dao, and Human-Yin Earth, using disciples and successors as experimental pieces in attempts to gain the recognition of Human Yin Fire. 290 He ultimately completed his three Fire Qis, but still required a final meritorious accomplishment to cultivate the True; Tian Xing indicated that this missing achievement may lie within Heaven-Reversing Palace. 382

Mingyou’s schemes increasingly drew the attention of True Persons. When Profound Firmament Responsive-Origin True Person attempted to obstruct Wang Ping’s completion of the Martial Dao inheritance, Mingyou entered the Eight Trigrams Furnace and fought the True Person’s Qi Refinement avatar rather than allow Wang Ping to be removed. 367 Afterward, Mingyou and Tian Xing fled to the Divine Weapons Institute’s Xingtian Temple, where Mingyou sought protection while resisting further attempts to make him another disposable piece in the Immortal-Brahma Dao Strife. 372

His escape from the Eight Trigrams Furnace left him severely injured, with blade light rampaging through his auspicious cloud. Heaven’s Will Wields the Profound Blade nevertheless spared his foundation, leaving injuries that could be healed. 370 At the Divine Weapons Institute, a True Person proposed that he earn his remaining Merit Deed by killing Brahma Kingdom monks in the Immortal-Brahma Dao Strife. Mingyou openly challenged the attempt to use him again, pointing out that the earlier Eight Trigrams Furnace scheme had driven every major piece to rebel. 372

Heaven-Reversing Palace and Earlier Opportunities

By the gathering around Heaven-Reversing Palace, Mingyou was regarded as the Immortal Sect’s foremost Qi Refiner despite not being a direct disciple of either a True Person or an immortal realm’s True Lord. Even while serving Light-Holding Cinnabar Sun True Person, he had refused the latter’s Merit Deeds and retained practical autonomy. Rumor attributed his achievements to an extraordinary opportunity obtained before Heaven-Reversing Palace’s previous emergence. 438

His refusal to surrender his independence became known within the immortal realms as Thrice Rejecting the Mystic Demons. The disclosed incidents include Ming De’s attempt to recruit him and make him surrender his opportunity during Heaven-Reversing Palace’s previous descent, followed by a qilin’s personal offer to receive him and assist his future True Cultivation. Mingyou refused both approaches and defeated both visitors. 464

Fragrant Drapery Hall

When Mingyou arrived at the Heaven-Presenting Hall, Chen Yuanfu asked him to open the Gate-Origin Golden Lock, a nether yin metal treasure vulnerable to his Earth Yin Fire. Mingyou quickly recognized that the supposed opportunity involving Kun Yun was actually Wang Ping’s scheme, since he knew Kun Yun lacked the ability to outmaneuver Wang Ping in the manner described. Answering Wang Ping’s inward call, he entered a private discussion through the latter’s Sea of Consciousness. 442

Mingyou correctly inferred that Wang Ping intended to trap and kill the gathered Qi Refiners, much as he had done in the Eight Trigrams Furnace. Wang Ping invited him to participate by pointing out that the assembled Dao Scions were rivals for True Cultivation, particularly Ming De. Mingyou was willing to remove a potential obstacle, but insisted that this alone was insufficient compensation for his assistance. 442

After breaking the lock, Mingyou entered Fragrant Drapery Hall with Tian Xing, drawn by the genuine presence of a True Lord’s instrument of Dao attainment. His true body easily pierced Wang Ping’s Nether-Piercing Profound Governor concealment and resisted the surrounding Incense Qi, revealing Heavenly Roar within. Rather than abandon the opportunity, Mingyou struck the teleportation array to draw the other third-level Qi Refiners into the confrontation. 443

When Heavenly Roar attempted to escape, Mingyou used Brilliant Candlelight to intercept it and forced its enormous body down in direct combat. After testing Mingyou’s strength, Heavenly Roar concluded that victory was uncertain and defeat possible; it expended the Paradox-Resolving Peace-Establishing Arrowhead to flee rather than remain exposed to the cultivators and potential intervention by True Persons. 444

Later Dealings

Mingyou and Tian Xing later sought Wang Ping over the Hundred-Treasure Storehouse imagery. In Wang Ping’s first enhanced simulation, he inferred that Mingyou’s True Cultivation plan involved revealing Heaven-Reversing Palace. The simulated sequence ended with Chu Huaijing driving Mingyou away and suppressing Wang Ping; this was a simulated outcome rather than an established defeat in the actual course of events. 457

Mingyou subsequently clarified that he was only borrowing the Divine Weapons Institute’s influence and did not possess its tradition’s secret knowledge. He also admitted limited knowledge of the Contemplation Constant Realm’s reserves, noting that its cultivators had kept a low profile since Wood Qi Life-Stealing. 459

During Wang Ping’s battle with the ancient Fire Qilin Gu Han, Mingyou watched beside Tian Xing and dispersed nearby aftershocks with lamplight. He was struck by the speed of Wang Ping’s improvement, but remained confident that his disciple would not begin such a fight without some assurance of success. 464

Role in Wang Ping's Cultivation

Mingyou recognized Wang Ping as a valuable piece in larger schemes surrounding the Earth-Bearing Myriad Gods Diagram, the Great Rebellion’s merit, and the Light-Holding Cinnabar Sun True Person. He had Wang Ping cultivate the diagram and inherit the Great Rebellion’s identity, using those developments to support Mingyou’s own pursuit of the Human Yin Fire known as Illumining and Preserving the Hidden Qi. 289 290

Mingyou had likely observed Wang Ping from the time Wang Ping refined You Xuexin into a Dharma Consort. Rather than killing him for this offense, he allowed Wang Ping to continue because he needed him as the decisive piece in the scheme surrounding Kun Yun’s Life Tribulation and the Great Rebellion’s inheritance. 226 229

After Kun Yun’s death, Mingyou concentrated the karma for the death and Wood Qi’s damage on Wang Ping. Appointing Wang Ping as the Eight Trigrams Furnace’s Furnace-Watching Disciple also allowed Mingyou to avoid taking on further karma himself. 235

After Wang Ping killed Liansheng Yue and entered her memories, Mingyou accepted him as a True Disciple and praised his ability to solve hidden riddles, probe Liansheng Yue, and reach him through her Sea of Consciousness. He assigned Wang Ping to expand the Earth-Bearing Myriad Gods Diagram across the entire Eight Trigrams Furnace despite knowing that doing so would further entrench Wang Ping’s cultivation dead end. 249 250

Mingyou’s demand that Wang Ping complete the diagram served two purposes. It fulfilled the Light-Holding Cinnabar Sun True Person’s arrangement, while also strengthening Wang Ping’s status as the inheritor of the Great Rebellion and thereby increasing Mingyou’s chance of commanding the Illumining and Preserving the Hidden Qi. 289 290

As Wang Ping’s Martial Dao and Great Rebellion merit grew beyond Mingyou’s control, Mingyou shifted from treating him as a useful “pet” to considering him a dangerous threat. He sought loopholes in the Great Rebellion’s protection, including arranging for the aged Xuanlongzi to face Wang Ping through a manipulated Life Tribulation. 269 275

Despite this hostility, Mingyou repeatedly intervened to preserve Wang Ping’s life, including abandoning an advantageous position against Bukong to protect him from Wu Chi’s Maheśvara Arrow. Wang Ping exploited that concern to force Mingyou into revealing parts of his schemes and assisting his cultivation. 288 289

Mingyou eventually discovered that Light-Holding Cinnabar Sun True Person intended to have Wang Ping use Heavenly-Yin Metal to destroy the Earth-Bearing Myriad Gods Diagram. Although this would accomplish the True Person’s objective, it would sever the inheritance on which Mingyou’s Human Yin Fire depended. He therefore arranged for Tian Xing to give Wang Ping the Taibai Heaven-Piercing Scripture and began transferring his hopes for inheritance and continuation from the diagram to Martial Dao. 316

Wang Ping’s subsequent consumption of the Frost-Sinking Golden Battle-Axe removed the immediate threat of its use against the diagram and gave Mingyou time to make that transition. Mingyou also gave him the complete original Heavenly Immortal’s Secret Scripture of Immortality and agreed to arrange a Fire-Qi Immortal Body through the Ghost-Axe Corpse-Liberated Immortal. 321

Mingyou’s protection later became a matter of personal Dao survival. He recognized that Wang Ping’s completion of the Martial Dao inheritance would allow him to complete Human Yin Fire; consequently, he was willing to oppose even a True Person’s avatar rather than permit Wang Ping’s removal from the Eight Trigrams Furnace. 367

His interventions also included blocking Brahma Kingdom Ascetic Monks from reclaiming a Spirit Treasure staff seized by Wang Ping. Mingyou preemptively claimed it as a treasure he had given his disciple, reasoning that Wang Ping would otherwise threaten to die and force his involvement anyway. 331

Their later dealings became increasingly reciprocal. At Fragrant Drapery Hall, Mingyou recognized Wang Ping’s trap but negotiated over the benefits of joining it, while Wang Ping drew on his master’s rivalry with Ming De and desire for True Cultivation. 442 443

Appearance

Mingyou usually appears as a youthful Daoist despite his extreme age and former physical decline. He is associated with cloud-treading feet, a whisk, lantern-like firelight in his eyes, and immense auspicious-cloud manifestations. 216 269 284

Personality

Mingyou is calm, calculating, and emotionally restrained in ordinary dealings. He evaluates people by their usefulness to his Dao path, readily turning disciples, allies, enemies, and large-scale conflicts into parts of a longer cultivation plan. 216 228 290

His central motivation is longevity and eventual advancement to the True Person realm. He is willing to sacrifice allies once their usefulness ends, conceal his own interests beneath a greater power’s arrangements, and exploit the laws of Fate through Life Tribulations. 231 275 290

Mingyou believes that weaker cultivators survive the designs of higher powers by discovering and accommodating those powers’ interests, then seeking profit within the resulting arrangement. He considers reckless defiance of Heaven irresponsible toward one’s own Dao path. 272 289

Mingyou nevertheless displays a complicated attachment to Wang Ping. He mocks, threatens, and manipulates him, but repeatedly protects him, grants teachings under pressure, and becomes vulnerable to Wang Ping’s shameless appeals to their master-disciple relationship. 289 306 321

His pragmatism has limits where his Dao path is concerned. Mingyou is willing to humble himself before anyone who advances his cultivation, but he will confront even immortals who obstruct it. 367

He also places considerable value on autonomy. Despite publicly scorning the Brahma Kingdom’s dependent longevity, he privately envied its cultivators’ extended lives and had considered joining them before deciding against it. His later refusals of recruitment and externally supplied Merit Deeds likewise show his reluctance to surrender control of his Dao path. 285 438 464

His outward composure can give way to profanity, frustration, or fierce physical aggression. Wang Ping repeatedly provokes him into abandoning his dignified manner, while his clash with Heavenly Roar saw him seize the beast’s head and attempt to force its jaws shut with his bare hands. 281 289 444

Mingyou understands Wang Ping’s habits exceptionally well. He recognized the false Kun Yun narrative as Wang Ping’s work almost immediately and deduced that the widely advertised opportunity concealed another killing trap. Nevertheless, he could still be drawn into Wang Ping’s arrangements when the promised opportunity was genuine and sufficiently valuable. 442 443

Qi Refinement

Mingyou is a powerful Qi Refiner whose cultivation vastly exceeds that of Tribulation Transcendence cultivators. His presence and cultivation environment alone can overwhelm lower-realm practitioners. 216

His perception is not unrestricted. The Martial Arena prevented You Xuexin’s call from reaching him, despite his ordinary ability to sense his name across the realm of the Twenty-Four Qi. 176 Conversely, he later followed Wang Ping’s inward invocation into a Sea of Consciousness and penetrated the Nether-Piercing Profound Governor’s concealment inside Fragrant Drapery Hall. 442 443

Mingyou can reverse time within a localized area through the Heaven-Reversing Sun-Dial Instrument, a Fire Qi profundity comparable to Heaven-Reversing Sun-Returning. 44 303
