Background / History

Crown prince and the Yu Clan massacre

Lan Su was Blue River's crown prince and its most gifted heir, but he was born with incomplete Origin Essence. As a child, he was contacted by the time-traveling AI Lan Xiao Qi, which showed him visions of Cang Qi's future death and convinced him that a mutated vine could save his life. Fear of losing Cang Qi gradually displaced Lan Su's original ambition to become a benevolent ruler. 162

To obtain Yu Tu's restorative Origin Essence, Lan Su ordered the massacre of Yu Tu's clan and planet, then presented himself as Yu Tu's rescuer. Yu Tu was imprisoned for years and subjected to experiments intended to mutate his healing vines. 157 162

Lan Su also pursued the mass production of Slave-Taming Eyes. He tested one through his guard Peter, gave another to Tianguang, and had Master Moore assassinated after Moore opposed the project and tried to reveal its designs. 162

Yu Tu eventually exposed Lan Su's crimes to Elisa through Lan Xiao. After Lan Su was imprisoned, Yu Tu traded nineteen years of memories for a meeting with him, then severed both of Lan Su's legs as revenge for the massacre and experimentation. 157

Prisoner 01

Lan Su became First Prison's Prisoner 01, held in the Sky Prison Cell above Calamity Planet. Although imprisoned for life, he received exceptional treatment because he was Calamity Planet's only senior pharmacist; Lu Mi arranged his special cell through Cang Qi's influence. 24

His former pet mech, White Star, had been ordered destroyed when Lan Su was sent to Calamity Planet. Cang Qi rebuilt its surviving core into a wheelchair that remained mentally linked to Lan Su and allowed him to move independently. 27

Lan Su examined Yu Tu after his arrival at First Prison, detecting more than one hundred drugs in Yu Tu's blood. He used confidential research files to uncover the Blue Star Pharmaceutical Research Institute's plan to exploit Yu Tu as the Blue River System's only Diamond-Grade Vine. 26 27

Freedom Star leadership

During the escape from Calamity Planet, Lan Su reactivated the Diamond-Grade White Whale and used the Unknown Whale to protect the prisoners from the sea and incoming attacks, despite the severe strain on his body. 58 88

When Yu Tu asked him to become a good Star Lord, Lan Su promised that he would. He later became a central leader of Freedom Star's independence movement, earning widespread support among Drifting Refugees and helping establish the Freedom Sector. 89 81

After the Blue River Empire fell, Lan Su restored order across the newly expanded Freedom Sector within three months. Popular petitions called for him to become emperor of the proposed Freedom Empire. 154

Confession, imprisonment, and death

At the Freedom Empire's founding ceremony, Lan Su publicly admitted that he had ordered the destruction of Yu Tu's planet. He rejected the throne, sentenced himself to life imprisonment in Central Prison, and appointed Cang Qi as emperor instead. 158 159

Lan Su's health continued to fail due to his damaged Origin Essence, the loss of his legs, and the repeated use of White Whale's Source Power. After Cang Qi uncovered the full history of Lan Su's crimes and motivations through Little Seven Castle, he reached Lan Su's cell in time to hold his hand as Lan Su died. 161 162

Lan Su is a very tall, frail man with a gentle but unsettling presence. He is usually seen seated in White Star, the wheelchair built from his former pet mech. 25 27

Personality

Lan Su is calm, observant, and difficult to read. He often masks clinical focus with amused teasing, deliberately provoking Yu Tu during examinations and openly enjoying Lu Mi's embarrassment. 25 27

His tenderness is most visible around Cang Qi. He calls Cang Qi “Baby,” values White Star's attachment to him, and eventually returns Cang Qi's love despite initially refusing to do so. 27 30

Lan Su's defining flaw is the fear-driven conviction that only he could protect Cang Qi. That belief led him to sacrifice Yu Tu's people, exploit Yu Tu's body, and abandon his own ideals. Witnessing Yu Tu risk himself for Freedom Star forced Lan Su to confront the person he had become. 162

His later conduct is shaped by accountability rather than self-preservation: he refuses the imperial throne, accepts imprisonment, and chooses a successor he believes can govern better than himself. 158 159
