Nature and Classification

Spirit Insects are insect-type spirit beasts: insects that possess spiritual power and may develop cultivation realms, mental power, and specialized innate abilities. Their abilities are highly individual; many are formidable in one narrow field while weak in direct combat or general adaptability. 52 137 448

The distinction between insects and beasts is strict on the Heavenly Spirit Continent. Insect Spirit Masters can control Spirit Insects, while Beast Spirit Masters control Spirit Beasts. Some insect-like creatures are classified as insects despite resembling reptiles or other small animals. 275

Spirit Insects are not necessarily unintelligent. Intelligence commonly rises with cultivation and refinement, but some high-level specimens remain instinct-driven or mentally dull. 706 741 1432

Physical Characteristics

Spirit Insects vary radically in form, from ordinary-looking butterflies and dragonflies to bodiless mental entities, dispersed water-based organisms, skeletal parasite insects, and massive Insect Beasts.

Cultivation and Metamorphosis

Spirit energy is the foundation of a Spirit Insect’s evolution. Insects can sense concentrated spiritual energy and are instinctively drawn to sources that may improve them. 137

A refined Gu Insect often has limited future potential, especially if it was created through mutations or by devouring other insects. Huo Hai reconstructs the Spirit-Ascension Shamanic Formation specifically to purify Bloodlines and raise an insect’s potential for future advancement. 239

Advancement requirements differ sharply by species:

• Mental-attribute insects may require Mental Attribute Essence or materials that strengthen their Soul Origins. 468

Refinement and Control

Conventional Insect Spirit Master Control

Insect Spirit Masters control Spirit Insects primarily by leaving mental marks within their minds. They can enhance insects through specialized techniques, sometimes allowing relatively weak insects to unleash power far beyond their base cultivation. 967 1158

This method has significant limitations:

Huo Hai’s Insect Refining Formation

Huo Hai’s refinement methods differ fundamentally from ordinary mental control. His original Insect Refining Formation uses blood, spiritual energy, mental power, and shamanic techniques to implant a formation within an insect’s soul. The resulting bond grants absolute obedience and lets him perceive through the refined insect’s senses. 52

Insect Beasts

Insect Beasts are an evolutionary path of Spirit Insects rather than ordinary Spirit Beasts. They remain insects in nature but develop larger bodies, greater adaptability, and stronger individual combat power. Both Insect Spirit Masters and Beast Spirit Masters can control them. 452 981

Huo Hai develops an Insect Beast Cultivation Method by stimulating undeveloped Spirit Acupoints within Spirit Insects. This forces bodily growth and mutation but risks damaging an insect’s potential or killing it outright. 979
