Origins and History

According to the account revealed through Mew, Mew arrived on the planet with a comet, whose impact scattered crystals that became the Tree of Beginning. Mew then created the earliest Pokémon, beginning with four inhabitants of the Tree before producing further generations that spread across the world. 457

Over time, Pokémon adapted to changing environments, reproduced, evolved into new species, and experienced extinction alongside humanity’s own development. The modern world is presented as one jointly inhabited by humans and Pokémon. 457

Society and Autonomy

• Pokémon are capable of operating businesses, earning and exchanging money, shopping, drinking, socializing, and pursuing leisure independently of human Trainers. 8
• Some Pokémon work in human-like occupations, including restaurant owners, servers, bartenders, construction workers, lifeguards, and teachers. 8 10 17 173
• Pokémon experience emotional strain from abandonment, neglect, favoritism among a Trainer’s team, and being treated as disposable battle tools. 8 18
• Pokémon can form communities and maintain their own laws, social hierarchies, and systems of authority. 9 455
• The novel repeatedly rejects the idea that Pokémon are merely pets or merchandise; they are treated as individuals capable of making their own decisions and relationships. 8 18 45

Kabukicho

Alola Kabukicho is a hidden, sleepless entertainment district created by and for Pokémon. Its residents can relax, trade, spend money, work, and escape the stress of wild life or Trainer ownership. 8

The district is populated largely by wild, abandoned, and Trainerless Pokémon, making it dangerous for ordinary humans to enter. Its existence and secrecy are controlled by the Kabukicho Elite Four and the Tree of Beginning. 9 437

• Slowking Izakaya serves as a major gathering place for Kabukicho residents and later becomes Odd Jobs’ home base. 8 45

Human–Pokémon Relationships

Trainer relationships carry legal and social responsibilities. In Alola, prospective Trainers must complete formal education before gaining the legal right to travel freely, own Pokémon, and receive official Trainer recognition. 12 13

Pokémon partnerships are not automatically defined by capture. Xingye accepts responsibility for Cyclizar before formally catching it, and later asks for Gengar’s consent before making it his Pokémon. 9 29

For Xingye, the Rotom Phone’s Friendship System converts genuine bonds with Pokémon into Friendship Talents. These Talents become unusable if the relationship breaks down, though the friendship can be rebuilt. 1

Communication

Pokémon Language

Pokémon normally communicate through their own cries, gestures, expressions, and behavior; humans generally cannot understand them directly. Slowking uses Telepathy when speaking with humans because it considers ordinary Pokémon speech unintelligible to them. 8

Xingye later gains [Not Dumb at All], a Friendship Talent that improves his ability to infer Pokémon intentions from their behavior, though it does not grant full direct translation. 21

Telepathy and Spiritual Communication

Some Pokémon possess abilities that bypass ordinary language barriers. Slowking uses Telepathy, while Xingye’s Aura allows him to communicate emotionally with Pokémon such as Zoroark. 8 336

Development and Evolution

Pokémon must reach sufficient maturity before reproducing; they cannot lay Eggs until at least five years old. 11

Evolution is not always a simple increase in strength or resources. Gimmighoul reached 99.99% progress toward evolution through its Gilding ability, but could not evolve until it faced danger, trusted Xingye’s command, and committed to saving him; it then evolved into Gholdengo. 175 176 178

Pokémon can also undergo unusual or incomplete transformations. Finizen evolved into Dolphin Hero after protecting others, but initially could not access its defining Zero to Hero transformation. 219 220
